Many Black Judges in Harris County, Texas are Facing Stiff Challengers on Tuesday, November 8, 2022, in the Midterm Election

With straight-ticket voting now abolished in Texas, many of the Black judges on the November Midterm Election ballot could find themselves vulnerable if Harris County, Texas goes purple. And with every down-ballot judicial race contested on Tuesday, November 8, 2022, it's highly likely that Harris County voters could elect nominees from both political parties this time around. That being said, Judge Sharon Burney, the Justice of the Peace for Precinct 7, Place 2, is the only Democratic Judge who did not draw a Republican challenger for the upcoming general election.

On Tuesday, November 8, 2022, history could be made once again in Harris County, Texas. Now, if you think back to the 2018 Midterm Election, nineteen African American women, themed, “BLACK GIRL MAGIC” drove the entire Democratic Party to commanding victories up and down the ballot by wielding their “COLLECTIVE POWER” in a way never seen before in American history. Coupled with Beto O’Rourke’s historic run for the U.S. Senate, Democrats in Harris County, Texas sent a “BLUE WAVE” through Harris County, Texas, unlike anything we had ever witnessed before. However, without the benefit of straight-ticket voting this time around, Democrats appear to have lost their way.

A GHOST TOWN

Harris County is almost like “A GHOST TOWN” right now. Back during the 2018 Midterm Election, straight-ticket voting was allowed, and every Democratic Party candidate who was running countywide “BENEFITED GREATLY” from the efforts of “TWO BLACK SITTING JUDGES” by the name of Judge Maria T. Jackson (339th Criminal District Court), and Judge Ramona Franklin (338th Criminal District Court), and the other seventeen other “BLACK WOMEN” who worked together to garner the support of the Black community for all Democrats regardless of their ethnicity. But through today, Thursday, July 21, 2022, Harris County, Texas is almost like “A GHOST TOWN” if you ask me.

A BIG LOSS

Judge Erica Hughes was the presiding judge for Harris County Criminal Court at Law No. 3, but late last year she was elevated to a federal judge. And not having Judge Hughes out on the campaign trail during this upcoming cycle is “A BIG LOSS” for Democrats – especially Black Democrat judicial candidates who appear to not understand that they are the ones being hunted this time around.

WITHOUT DIRECTION

Black Democratic incumbents judges appear to be lost and without direction right now. They’re supposed to be leading the charge, but many appear to just be sitting on the money that’s been donated to them, with no plans to use it for their reelection bids. So, the lack of direction we’re seeing right now could very well make Judge Toria J. Finch, Judge Tonya Jones, Judge Lori Chambers Gray, Judge Shannon Baldwin, Judge Germaine Tanner, Judge Latosha Lewis Payne, Judge Dedra Davis, Judge Sandra Peake, Judge Linda Marie Dunson, Judge Michelle Moore, Judge Ronnisha Bowman, Judge LaShawn A. Williams, Judge Angela Graves-Harrington, Judge Lucia Bates all “ONE TERM JUDGES” and the laughing stock of America if they don’t get their acts together soon.

UNFINISHED BUSINESS

We’ve got some very good “BLACK DEMOCRATIC JUDICIAL CANDIDATES” on the ballot this time around on both sides of the aisle. I really like former Judge Clyde Leuchtag and attorney Aaron Adams, who are both running on the Republican side. And I also have a number of former clients from my “2018 ENDORSEMENT SLATE” who I believe has done a very good job since taking the bench. However, I can assure you that there are a handful of judges who are sitting on the bench right now in Harris County, Texas who need to be sent packing just like the ten incumbent Democrats who lost their benches on Tuesday, March 1, 2022, in the Democratic Party Primary. And the other two, Judge Clinton "Chip" Wells, and Judge Jason Luong lost their benches in the Democratic Party Primary runoffs that took place on May 24, 2022, in Harris County, Texas.
