Democrats Are Focusing Too Much Attention on President Trump – Not Enough on Down-Ballot Races

Judge Staci Williams and Justice Jeff Boyd Will Face Off in the Race for Justice, Texas Supreme Court, Place 7, on Tuesday, November 3, 2020

AUBREY R. TAYLOR REPORTS©

The Tuesday, November 3, 2020, showdown between Judge Staci Williams (Democrat) and Justice Jeff Boyd (Republican), two highly-qualified nominees running for Justice, Texas Supreme Court, Place 7, should be getting a lot more attention than its currently getting heading into Labor Day, Monday, September 7, 2020. This “KEY 2020 JUDICIAL RACE” has largely gone unnoticed by Texas Democratic Party leadership who should be trying to assist Judge Staci Williams in her quest to make history. And nope, the Texas Republican Party leadership isn’t doing any better – they don’t really appear to be doing their job either. It’s a shame that both major political parties are not doing a lot more than they’re currently doing to assist their duly-qualified down-ballot nominees like Judge Staci Williams and Justice Jeff Boyd during this pivotal moment in American history. After all, raising money during this COVID-19 pandemic for some of these down-ballot candidates is extremely difficult right now – but I digress. Anyways, in case you don’t know, Judge Staci Williams wasn’t the first choice of the Democratic establishment to appear on the ballot as their nominee in the race for Justice, Texas Supreme Court, Place 7. Her Democratic opponent, Brandy Voss, a white female was shown a whole lot of love (behind the scenes) by the Democratic establishment, and other Democratic operatives – and that’s the truth! But don’t take my word for it -- if you don’t believe me, just go ask Judge Staci Williams for yourself – I’m sure she’ll tell you the truth – at least I hope she will. Look, truth be told, it was through hard work, perseverance, determination, her faith in God and completely depleting her resources that Judge Staci Williams was able to overcome the obstacles she faced to handily dispatched of her Democratic rival back on Tuesday, March 3, 2020 – but now that she’s the nominee, is the Democratic Party going to step in and help her at all? Or are they going to sit by and do absolutely nothing to assist her? Moving on -- as refresher, Judge Staci Williams received an astonishing, 1,134,105 votes, for 65.09% of the vote back on March 3rd, in the Democratic Party Primary. Her Democratic rival, Brandy Voss only received 608,288 votes for 34.91% of the vote. Judge Williams’ stellar performance against her Democratic rival back in the March Democratic Party Primary proves her viability as a statewide candidate. However, to make history, by becoming the first African American female to serve on the Texas Supreme Court, she must unseat Justice Jeff Boyd – which won’t be easy. In case you don’t know, back in 2014, the last time Justice Jeff Boyd was on the ballot, he defeated Gina Benevides, a Democrat, Don Fulton, a Libertarian, and Charles E. Waterbury, a member of the Green Party. As a refresher, back in 2014, Justice Jeff Boyd, received an astonishing 2,772,824 votes for 60.32% of the vote – while the Democrat he was facing at the time, Gina Benevides only received 1,731,031 votes for 37.60% of the vote. The Libertarian, Don Fulton received 126,725 votes and the Green Party candidate, Charles E. Waterbury received 34,493 respectfully. Why is this significant? Well, make a mental note, that Justice Jeff Boyd beat his last Democratic rival by 1,041,793 votes! Yes, that’s a margin of victory totaling more than a million votes in Texas. So, please don’t forget that early voting will begin on Tuesday, October 13, 2020, and end on Friday, October 30, 2020. Election Day voting will take place on Tuesday, November 3, 2020.

DEMOCRATS ARE FOCUSING TOO MUCH ATTENTION ON PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP -- NOT ENOUGH ON DOWN-BALLOT JUDICIAL RACES

Make no mistake about it Harris County, Texas is the “GOLD PRIZE” in Texas politics. So, as Labor Day, Monday, September 7, 2020, approaches and we still haven’t seen the Harris County Democratic Party do anything measurable to show that their base is mobilized, informed, and energized – it’s leaving a lot of folks scratching their heads in dismay. I mean, is there even going to be any kind of voter education initiative launched? Hell, there are still Democratic voters out here who don’t even know that they won’t be able to vote a straight-ticket on Tuesday, November 3, 2020. It’s like the Harris County Democratic Party leadership has a few 2020 races they care about – and the rest of their down-ballot nominees are being left behind to fend for themselves. Yes, we’re in the middle of a pandemic – but where is the leadership? Believe it or not, the COVID-19 pandemic has severely hampered both major political parties in Texas – especially the down-ballot judicial candidates. How? Well, for starters, candidates running for judicial benches are typically not as well known as candidates running for President, United States Senate, Congress, and other positions that appear at the top of the ballot during “PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION” cycles. That being said, down-ballot judicial races are not a top priority for donors, and when things get tight, like they are right now, monies tend to dry up pretty quickly for lesser-known candidates. And with straight-ticket voting abolished in Texas, Democratic judicial candidates running for office in Harris County, Texas in 2020 won’t be able to rely on the 472,030 votes they received by way of straight-ticket voting simply because they had a “D” in front of their name back on Tuesday, November 8, 2016. But the same goes for the Republicans. Nope, Republican candidates running countywide in Harris County, Texas won’t be able to rely on the 401,663 votes they received by way of straight-ticket voting back in 2016 either. So, which party will be affected the most by not having the straight-ticket voting option on the ballot on Tuesday, November 3, 2020 in Harris County, Texas? In my professional opinion, not having straight-ticket voting on Tuesday, November 3, 2020, is going to be “A BIG PROBLEM” for Democratic down-ballot judicial candidates. And the sad part about this issue is that I don’t believe down-ballot Democrats realize how big of a problem not having straight-ticket voting is going to be for them in this election cycle.

CAN DEMOCRATIC JUDICIAL INCUMBENTS HOLD ON TO THEIR SEATS IN HARRIS COUNTY?

In my professional opinion, every Democratic judge who is running for re-election in Harris County, Texas is vulnerable. But instead of running their races like they’re 10 percentage points behind – many of these Democrats are running their races like they’ve won their respective races already. It’s almost like some of these Democrats has some inside information or something. How can I say this? Well, for starters, in the past two major election cycles, every Democratic judicial candidate who was running countywide in Harris County, Texas enjoyed a huge advantage over their Republican rival because of straight-ticket voting. As a quick reminder, back the 2018 midterm election, every Democrat running countywide in Harris County, Texas received 515,812 for doing nothing other than being on the ballot running as a Democrat – that’s a fact Jack! And if you go back to the 2016 presidential election, every Democrat running countywide in Harris County, Texas, received 472,030 votes for doing absolutely nothing, other than being on the ballot running as a Democrat – this is an indisputable fact Jack! So, why are they so confident? Could they know something already, that the rest of us don't? What’s the problem? I’m about to tell you if you hold your horses. On Tuesday, November 3, 2020, Democratic judicial candidates (whether they happen to be a sitting incumbent Democratic Judge or 2020 nominee) will have to convince anywhere from 600,000 to perhaps even 800,000 voters to go into the voting booth and cast their ballot specifically for them on one of the longest ballots in these United States of America. And sure, Republican candidates will have to do the very same thing. However, you have to keep in mind, that Republican judicial candidates normally win the battle in the “NON-STRAIGHT TICKET VOTING” category. Meaning, a lot of their supporters are already accustomed to going down the ballot, finding their name, and then casting their vote for them. For example, back on Tuesday, November 8, 2016, in the last presidential election, in the down-ballot race for District Judge, for the 351st Criminal District Court you had George Powell (Democrat) trying to unseat Judge Mark Kent Ellis (Republican). Believe it or not, 69,200 voters skipped right over this particular race. Also remember, at the top of the ticket (back in 2016) in the race for President of the United States, between Hillary Clinton (Democrat) and Donald Trump (Republican), only 26,622 voters skipped over that particular race on their ballot in Harris County, Texas. So, in essence, 1,312,112 voters cast a ballot in the race for President between Clinton and Trump back in 2016 – in Harris County, Texas. However, only 1,266,377 votes were cast in the down-ballot race for 351st Criminal District Court between Judge Mark Kent Ellis and George Powell. So, what’s the problem? In closing, hoping that voters go down their ballot and vote for every Democratic candidate because they don’t like President Donald J. Trump isn’t a good political strategy. Why? Well, we already know that Donald J. Trump got fewer votes than any other candidate (Republican or Democrat) who was running countywide back in 2016 in Harris County, Texas. As a refresher, Trump only received 545,955 votes for 41.61% of the vote. Comparatively speaking, Clinton received 707,914 votes for 53.95% of the vote in Harris County, Texas back in 2016. So, while the disdain for President Trump is real and present in Harris County, Texas – Labor Day is approaching, and Democrats still haven’t launched a measurable strategy to convince voters to cast their ballot for their down-ballot nominees – which is A BIG PROBLEM! In fact, it’s more than a problem – it’s a dereliction of their duty if you ask me.
