Christmas Came Early for these Eight Honorable Democrats in Harris County, Texas as Republicans Elect to Not Run A Full Slate in 2020

Meet Judge Ramona Franklin (above top left), Judge Kelli Johnson (above top second from left), Judge Hazel B. Jones (above third from left), Judge Robert Schaffer (above far right), Judge Kyle Carter (above lower far left), Judge Kristen Brauchle Hawkins (above lower second from left), Judge Robert Johnson (above lower third from left), and Judge Mike Engelhart (above lower right). These eight Honorable Democratic Judges have already won their 2020 re-election bids, do to the fact, no fellow Democrats or members of the Harris County Republican Party chose to challenge them. However, a Democrat by the name of Kate Welch did try to challenge the Honorable Judge Robert Johnson but had her application rejected after it was challenged.

Christmas Came Early for a Few of the Honorable Democratic Judges in Harris County, Texas; Republican Chairman Paul Simpson is Being Challenged in the GOP Primary

AUBREY R. TAYLOR REPORTS

What’s the best gift a Republican can give to a sitting Democratic incumbent judge in Harris County, Texas as we bring 2019 to a close? You guessed it, the gift of not having to face a Republican opponent in the 2020 general election next fall. Wow!!! After suffering crushing defeats in the past two major election cycles to their Democratic rivals, the Harris County Republican Party neglected to challenge many of the Democratic incumbent judges who are up for re-election in 2020, handing many Democratic incumbents their bids for re-election outright – talk about a Merry Christmas. I guess after trailing the Democrats by 70,367 straight-ticket votes in Harris County back in 2016, and following that up by trailing the Harris County Democrats by 105,158 straight-ticket votes back in 2018, the Harris County Republicans are a little gun-shy heading into 2020. And you can’t blame them one bit. After all, the Harris County Democrats have virtually had their way with their Republican counterparts whereas the countywide judicial races are concerned. That being said, the Republicans have elected to only challenge the 61st Civil District Court Bench; the 80th Civil District Court Bench; the 127th Civil District Court Bench; the 129th Civil District Court Bench; the 133rd Civil District Court Bench; the 164th Civil District Court Bench; the 165th Civil District Court Bench; the 215th Civil District Court Bench; the 334th Civil District Court Bench; the 339th Criminal District Court Bench; the 351st Criminal Court Bench; the 507th Family District Court Bench; the Harris County Civil Court at Law No. 4 Bench; the Harris County Criminal Court at Law No. 12 Bench; and the Harris County Criminal Court at Law No. 16 bench on Tuesday, November 3, 2020, in the general election.

The first day that you can apply for a ballot by mail using Application for a Ballot by Mail (ABBM) or Federal Postcard Application is Wednesday, January 1, 2020. The last day that you can get registered to vote is on Monday, February 3, 2020. Early voting will begin on Tuesday, February 18, 2020. The last day that you can apply for a ballot by mail (received, not postmarked) is Friday, February 21, 2020. The last day of early voting is Friday, February 28, 2020. If you don't vote during the early voting period you can still vote on Tuesday, March 3, 2020, at any open polling location.

Judge Lesley Briones values your vote. Unfortunately, Judge Leslie Briones has to face off against a fellow Democrat on Tuesday, March 3, 2020, in Harris County, Texas. After winning her showdown against her fellow Democrat, she'll have to turn around and face off against a Republican challenger by the name Clyde Raymond Leuchtag. In case you don't know, Leuchtag is a former judge, who is running unopposed in the 2020 Republican primary. He will be hard to beat, so Democratic voters are encouraged to nominate the "BEST-QUALIFIED" nominee to battle against a strong Republican nominee, like former Judge Clyde Raymond Leuchtag next fall.

Judge Maria T. Jackson values your vote. Judge Maria T. Jackson stepped down from her bench to take on Commissioner Rodney Ellis on Tuesday, March 3, 2020, in the Democratic Party primary race for Harris County, Commissioner for Precinct 1. This heated Democratic primary showdown is a winner-take-all-match between two "DEMOCRATIC TITANS" who are embroiled in one of the hottest races on the entire Democratic Primary ticket.

Congratulations to Judge Kristen Brauchle Hawkins. Since the Harris County Republican Party elected to not challenge the 11th Judicial District bench, currently held by Judge Kristen Brauchle Hawkins, who is running unopposed in the Tuesday, March 3, 2020, Democratic primary, she has already won her 2020 bid for re-election.

Congratulations to Judge Kyle Carter. Since the Harris County Republican Party elected to not challenge the 125h Judicial District bench, currently held by Judge Kyle Carter, who is running unopposed in the Tuesday, March 3, 2020, Democratic primary, he has already won his 2020 bid for re-election.

Congratulations to Judge Mike Engelhart. Since the Harris County Republican Party elected to not challenge the 151st Judicial District bench, currently held by Judge Mike Engelhart, who is running unopposed in the Tuesday, March 3, 2020, Democratic primary, he has already won his 2020 bid for re-election.

Congratulations to Judge Robert K. Schaffer. Since the Harris County Republican Party elected to not challenge the 152nd Judicial District bench, currently held by Judge Robert K. Schaffer, who is running unopposed in the Tuesday, March 3, 2020, Democratic primary, he has already won his 2020 bid for re-election.

Congratulations to Judge Hazel B. Jones. Since the Harris County Republican Party elected to not challenge the 174th Judicial District bench, currently held by Judge Hazel B. Jones who is running unopposed in the Tuesday, March 3, 2020, Democratic primary, she has already won her 2020 bid for re-election.

Congratulations to Judge Robert Johnson. Since the Harris County Republican Party elected to not challenge the 177th Judicial District bench, currently held by Judge Robert Johnson, who is running unopposed in the Tuesday, March 3, 2020, Democratic primary, he has already won his 2020 bid for re-election.

Congratulations to Judge Kelli Johnson. Since the Harris County Republican Party elected to not challenge the 178th Judicial District bench, currently held by Judge Kelli Johnson, who is running unopposed in the Tuesday, March 3, 2020, Democratic primary, she has already won her 2020 bid for re-election.

Congratulations to Judge Ramona Franklin. Since the Harris County Republican Party elected to not challenge the 338th Judicial District bench, currently held by Judge Ramona Franklin, who is running unopposed in the Tuesday, March 3, 2020, Democratic primary, she has already won her 2020 bid for re-election.

STRAIGHT-TICKET VOTING IS ABOLISHED IN THE STATE OF TEXAS

As Harris County Democratic and Republican voters prepare to select their nominees, they must keep several key things in mind going forward. First, primary voters must make it their business to nominate candidates who have the ability to run active campaigns against their opponents in the general election. Why? There won’t be any getting lucky on Tuesday, November 3, 2020, when the general election takes place in Harris County, Texas. Look, back in 2016, Democrats running countywide received 36,121 straight-ticket votes by way of “ABSENTEE BALLOTS” while their Republican counterparts only received 32,592 straight-ticket votes by way of “ABSENTEE BALLOTS” in Harris County, Texas. And in case you don’t remember, Democratic candidates also got the better of their Republican counterparts by way of straight-ticket voting during the “EARLY VOTING PERIOD” as 307,356 straight-ticket votes were cast for Democratic candidates who were running countywide. Comparatively speaking, Republican candidates running countywide back in 2016 only received 275,435 straight-ticket votes during the “EARLY VOTING PERIOD” in Harris County, Texas. And the sheer dominance displayed by Harris County Democratic voters by way of the straight-ticket voting process was astounding on “ELECTION DAY” as well. In case you don’t remember, 128,553 straight-ticket votes were cast by Democratic voters in Harris County, Texas back on Tuesday, November 8, 2016, in the general election. All total, 472,030 straight-ticket votes were cast by Democratic voters in Harris County, Texas back in 2016. And after only receiving 401,663 total straight-ticket votes when you combine their "ELECTION DAY" voting with their “ABSENTEE VOTING” and “EARLY VOTING” it’s no wonder the straight-ticket voting option has been abolished by the Republican-controlled Texas legislature -- things were starting to get out of hand in Texas.

A PROBLEM DEMOCRATS MAY FACE IN 2020 GENERAL ELECTION

Make no mistake about it not having straight-ticket voting is going to hurt Democratic candidates a lot more than it’s going to hurt Republican candidates in the 2020 general election. You must remember, Republican candidates, tend to do much better with independents and non-straight-ticket voters in Harris County, Texas. So, many Harris County voters who didn't vote a straight-ticket anyway, are already accustomed to going down the ballot and selecting the names of all the candidates they like. The challenge Democrats will face in 2020, is getting their base to go into the voting booth after working all day and then scrolling down the ballot and selecting all of the Democratic candidates. Especially when they are used to simply walking into the voting booth and pressing the straight-ticket voting option and capturing all of the Democratic candidates with the push of one button. However, Republican candidates will also face the same challenge in my opinion, but to a lesser degree.

UNDER VOTES WILL BE A PROBLEM IN 2020 GENERAL ELECTION

Getting Democratic and Republican voters to select candidates in every race will be a big problem in Harris County, Texas in 2020 without a straight-ticket voting option. Why? Look, even with straight-ticket voting as an option, voters for one reason or another would skip over some races. Sometimes it’s because they don’t like one, or both of the candidates running. At other times, some voters simply only care about one race on the ballot – which tends to cause the number of undervotes to increase as voters scroll down the ballot. For instance, back in the last general election, there were only 26,622 undervotes in the race for President of the United States in Harris County, Texas. However, the number of voters skipping over down-ballot judicial races ranged from 63,000 to 69,000 in Harris County, Texas back in 2016. That being said, I am estimating the number of voters skipping over countywide judicial races in 2020 is going to fall anywhere between a range of 100,000 to 250,000 in Harris County, Texas on Tuesday, November 3, 2020, in Harris County, Texas.

Paul Simpson, the current Harris County Republican Party Chairman is being challenged by Keith Nielsen on Tuesday, March 3, 2020, in the Republican Party primary. So, please don't forget that early voting will begin on Tuesday, February 18, 2020, and end on Friday, February 28, 2020, in Harris County, Texas.

REPUBLICANS MUST DELIVER THEIR MESSAGE BETTER

A lot of folks don't know this, but African Americans at one point in the not so distant past would consistently support the Republican Party in Texas -- especially during their formative years. Heck, back during Reconstruction, African Americans made up about 90% of the GOP membership in Texas, according to their website. It's hard to believe, but back then, 44 African Americans served in the Texas legislature as Republicans -- that's more than we have in the Texas Legislature today. And in case you don't know, it was actually through the hard work of a number of dedicated African American men and women that the earliest foundations of the Republican Party of Texas were established. That being said, in my opinion, the Republican Party of Texas has missed a golden opportunity after golden opportunity to share their entire history with the people of Texas, thus allowing their party to be defined by others. Look, the first-ever state Republican convention was held in Houston, Texas back on Thursday, July 4, 1867, and was predominantly attended by African Americans according to information published on their website. From what I read on their website, the first-ever State convention for the Republican Party of Texas was attended by 150 African American Texans and about 20 Anglos.

THE REPUBLICAN PARTY WAS THE PLACE TO BE A LONG TIME AGO

Did you know that the second State GOP Chairman, Norris Wright Cuney, was an African-American from Galveston, Texas, who led the Republican Party of Texas from 1883 to 1897? What about the fact that Norris Wright Cuney, according to many historians held “the most important political position given to a black man of the South in the nineteenth century?

THE HARRIS COUNTY REPUBLICAN PARTY IS AT A SERIOUS CROSSROAD

Tuesday, March 3, 2020, will be a day of reckoning for the Harris County, Republicans. Do they keep Paul Simpson, or do they turn over the reins of the party to Keith Nielsen? After all, many Republicans think it’s time for Paul Simpson, chairman of the Harris County Republican Party to go. But others think he’s done the best he could with what he’s had to work with during the last two major election cycles. Whatever the case, he’s being challenged for his chairmanship on Tuesday, March 3, 2020, by Keith Nielsen, a fellow Republican who appears poised and ready to run hard for the chairmanship. In case for some reason you don't him, according to his Facebook page, Keith Nielsen is the chairman of the Board of Directors at Sarahs House and works as the Planning and Zoning Commissioner for the City of Pasadena, Texas.
