Commissioner Rodney Ellis and Judge Maria T. Jackson will face off in the 2020 Democratic Primary; Willie D's Application was Rejected

Commissioner Rodney Ellis (top left) was handed the Harris County Commissioner for Precinct 1 seat back in 2016 by a group of Harris County Democratic Party Precinct Chairs after the untimely death of the late Harris County Precinct 1 Commissioner El Franco Lee. Fast forward to now, Judge Maria T. Jackson (top middle), believes the time has come for Commissioner Rodney Ellis to be booted from his perch as one of the most powerful men in Harris County, Texas. That being said, Judge Jackson is following through on her intent to unseat Commissioner Ellis on Tuesday, March 3, 2020, in the Democratic primary. How? In case you haven't heard, Judge Jackson recently released her “SIX POINT PLATFORM” to let Harris County voters know why she can do a better job addressing the pressing issues Harris County residents are facing these days. And she wasn't the only Democrat who wanted a shot at taking down Commissioner Ellis in the 2020 Democratic Primary either. Nope, it wasn't just a rumor floating around, “Willie D”, in fact, also wanted a shot at unseating Commissioner Rodney Ellis but was denied of his opportunity to potentially do so by the Harris County Democratic Party, which decided the former Getto Boys rapper was ineligible because of his past felony conviction and used their interpretation of a "VAGUELY WRITTEN STATE LAW" as their justification for denying “Willie D” a chance to challenge Commissioner Rodney Ellis in 2020. But make no mistake about it, having "Willie D" in the race would have brought even more fireworks to the impending clash that lies head as Commissioner Ellis, and Judge Maria T. Jackson, two "DEMOCRATIC TITANS" prepare to do battle in the race for County Commissioner for Precinct 1 on Tuesday, March 3, 2020, in Harris County, Texas.

AUBREY R. TAYLOR REPORTS©

Should "Willie D" have been allowed to run against Commissioner Ellis too? The answer to this question depends on who you ask. As I’ve stated many times before, I am not a lawyer, but in case you don’t already know, Texas’ election code states that a person is only eligible to run for office if they have not been “finally convicted” of a felony “from which they have not been pardoned or otherwise released from the resulting disabilities. Look, most folks only look at the first part of the code that says a person cannot run if they have been “finally convicted,” but chooses to, for whatever reason, ignore the second part about “RESULTING DISABILITIES”, which many people, including the Harris County Democratic Party, are interpreting to mean that ex-felons can’t run for office. Again, I am not a legal scholar or anything like that, but it sounds to me like the “RESULTING DISABILITIES” that the authors of this code were talking about could be “JUSTIFIABLY INTERPRETED” as conditions of release i.e., parole, community supervision/probation, community service, paying of restitution/fines and other things like that. After all, there is no “LEGAL PRECEDENT” defining the term “RESULTING DISABILITIES”, at least not that I am aware of. But get this, according to the Merriam-Wester dictionary, the word “RESULTING” is described as to ‘proceed or arise as a consequence, effect, or conclusion’ and the word “DISABILITIES” in the Merriam-Webster dictionary is described as: ‘a physical, mental, cognitive, or developmental condition that impairs, interferes with, or limits a person's ability to engage in certain tasks or actions or participate in typical daily activities and interactions.” So, whether or not “Willie D” should have been allowed to run for office could have been justifiably left up to the courts to decide.

"Willie D" Dennis (right), a famous Houston rapper with the Getto Boys wanted a shot at Commissioner Rodney Ellis in the Democratic Party primary but his application was rejected by the Democratic Party. So, Commissioner Rodney Ellis and Judge Maria T. Jackson will be the only two candidates on the 2020 Democratic Party primary ballot in the race for Commissioner for Precinct 1 in Harris County, Texas.

2020 DEMOCRATIC PRIMARY SHOWDOWN

If you are looking for an intriguing Democratic primary race on Tuesday, March 3, 2020, you’ve found it! The race for Harris County Commissioner for Precinct 1, in the Democratic primary, is the most talked-about race in all of Harris County. Some folks doubt whether Maria T. Jackson, a life-long Democrat can beat Commissioner Rodney Ellis, but most of their concerns center around the vault full of campaign cash that Commissioner Ellis is closely watching over, as though he’s Al Capone in the Godfather movie or some sort of Kingmaker among Democrats. Look, guys, money does not votepeople do! So, the Tuesday, March 3, 2020, Democratic showdown between Commissioner Rodney Ellis, and Judge Maria T. Jackson is going to come down to who wants it the most. How bad does Judge Maria T. Jackson want Commissioner Ellis out of office? In my opinion, Judge Jackson wants him out of office pretty bad. Otherwise, she would not have relinquished the 339th Criminal District Court bench to take the guy on. Can she do it? Well, that’s the wrong question to ask. If you like Judge Maria T. Jackson in this race, the right question to be asking yourself right now, is this: “what can I do to help Judge Maria T. Jackson beat Rodney Ellis on Tuesday, March 3, 2020?”...But on the other hand, if you like Commissioner Ellis, you should perhaps be searching for ways to help Commissioner Rodney Ellis hold off the hard-charging Judge Maria Jackson when Election Day rolls around.

RODNEY ELLIS VERSUS MARIA T. JACKSON

In case you don’t know, Rodney Ellis didn't waste any time making his intention to run for re-election in 2020 very clear. He actually signed up first, to have his name placed on the ballot. Back on November 10, 2019, Ellis threw his hat in the ring. And wasting no time to let Commissioner Ellis know that she is serious about taking him out in 2020, Judge Maria T. Jackson went over to the Harris County Democratic Party on November 25, 2019, and threw her hat in the ring. So, when Commissioner Ellis and Judge Jackson face off on Tuesday, March 3, 2020, in the race for Harris County Commissioner for Precinct One, there will be several things at play in my opinion. First off, this is a winner-take-all contest, because no Republican signed up to run for this seat. So, the winner of the Tuesday, March 3, 2020, Democratic primary race for Harris County Commissioner Precinct 1 will win the seat. Secondly, it’s Judge Maria T. Jackson who could possibly be sitting in the catbird seat, especially since she’s the more "BATTLE-TESTED" of the two lifelong Democrats. What do I mean? I’m glad you asked. Look, from the way I see it, Commissioner Rodney Ellis has never really been challenged by anyone with the name identification as Judge Maria T. Jackson. You have to remember that Commissioner Rodney Ellis has become accustomed to other Democrats standing-down against him. But in Judge Maria T. Jackson, he will be facing a fierce competitor, a tenacious “pit bull” type of opponent who is not afraid of him.

RODNEY ELLIS OVER THE YEARS

In case you don’t know, Rodney Ellis was first elected to public office way back in 1983, at the ripe old age of 29 years old. The first office he was elected to was to represent District D on Houston’s city council. He served all three terms representing the historically African American district. Since then, he served in the Texas Legislature for a long-time representing Texas’ 13th state senate district, before being handed the Harris County Commissioner Precinct 1 seat by Democratic Precinct Chairs following the untimely death of Commissioner El Franco Lee back in 2016. Fast forward to 2019, the family of the late Commissioner El Franco Lee is endorsing Judge Maria T. Jackson over Commissioner Rodney Ellis. This coupled with the fact that Commissioner Ellis has never really been challenged since he had to fight to win his Houston City Council District D seat way back when he was 29 years old, has placed him in unchartered waters.

Judge Maria T. Jackson believes the people of Harris County, Texas deserve better than what they've been getting from Commissioner Rodney Ellis. So, on Tuesday, March 3, 2020, in the Democratic Party Primary race for Harris County Commissioner for Precinct 1, Judge Jackson and Commissioner Rodney Ellis will face off. In case you don't know, Judge Maria T. Jackson has lived a life of public service. Community is at the heart of all that she does, and strengthening our system of government services so they work for everyone has motivated her to run for Harris County Commissioner Precinct One.

MEET JUDGE MARIA T. JACKSON

According to her website, Judge Maria T. Jackson presided over the 339th State District Felony Court in Houston, Harris County, Texas for 11 years before stepping down to run for county commissioner. She oversaw more than 100 jury trials that ran the gamut from low-level drug offenses to capital murder cases.

While on the bench, Judge Jackson implemented sweeping reforms for how DWI probationers were handled in her court. The changes were so innovative they have since been adopted by the Harris County Probation Department as a best practice countywide.

Judge Jackson was appointed to serve as the presiding Judge in Cameron County, Texas by the chief justice of the Texas Supreme Court.

The United States Secret Service, U.S. Department of Homeland Security, the District Attorneys of Alabama, and the National Judicial College selected Judge Jackson as one of twenty-four judges from across the country to receive training at the National Computer Forensics Institute.

In 2003, Judge Jackson was appointed as a full-time municipal court judge for the City of Houston. During her tenure with the City, she also served as a trainer and instructor for the Texas Municipal Courts Education Center.
