Judge’s Maria T. Jackson and Ramona Franklin Come up Short Statewide in Bids for Higher Office – But Retain Harris County District Benches; Other 17 Black Women All Won Judicial Benches in Harris County

AUBREY R. TAYLOR REPORTS©

Over the next year or so, heading into the Tuesday, March 3, 2020 Democratic and Republican Primaries you're going to hear a lot of talk coming from the mouths of folks who have no idea what they just saw go down in Harris County, Texas back on Tuesday, November 6, 2018, in the midterm elections. And you’re probably going to hear even more foolish talk from folks claiming to have been the guiding hand, or visionaries who propelled this outstanding group of 19 African American women to their historic victories in Harris County. But I would have you to know that no one person or group can claim credit full-credit for what we just witnessed. Nor can any political pundit, analyst, or armchair consultant spin this election into a referendum on President Donald J. Trump or minimize the historical value of it by simply calling it a straight-ticket voting victory. Sure, President Trump’s antics in the final stretch of these midterms played a role. How big a role? Well, I can’t say for sure! And yes, straight-ticket voting played a role too. But, I believe the collective effort, faith, and tenacity put on full display by these 19 African American trailblazers in their individual and collective capacity played a far greater role than anything else in the unfolding of their overwhelming countywide victories in these 2018 midterms.

JUDGE MARIA T. JACKSON CAME UP SHORT STATEWIDE BUT HANDILY BEAT JUDGE SHARON KELLER IN HARRIS COUNTY, TEXAS

Congratulations to Judge Maria T. Jackson for running a solid race against Judge Sharon Keller, and William Brian Strange, III in the race for Presiding Judge, Court of Criminal Appeals. While Judge Jackson came up short in her quest to become the first Democrat to win a statewide race in Texas since the 1994 Gubernatorial election, she did accomplish a few things I would like to point out. In case you don't know, she handily beat Judge Sharon Keller in every measurable category in Harris County, Texas. ABSENTEE BALLOTS: Maria T. Jackson received 49,374 for (52.41%); Sharon Keller received 43,919 for (46.62%); and William Brian Strange, III received 922 for (0.98%). EARLY VOTES: Maria T. Jackson received 417,429 for (55.45%); Sharon Keller received 324,527 for (43.11%); and William Brian Strange, III received 10,874 for (1.44%). ELECTION DAY VOTES: Maria T. Jackson received 195,041 for (56.82%); Sharon Keller received 140,199 for (40.84%); and William Brian Strange, III received 8,036 for (2.34%). OVERALL TOTAL FOR HARRIS COUNTY: Maria T. Jackson received a total of 661,844 votes for (55.60%) of the Harris County vote. Sharon Keller received a total of 508,645 votes for (42.73%) of the vote. And William Brian Strange, III received a total of 19,832 votes for (1.67%) of the vote.

CLOSING ANALYSIS ON JACKSON VERSUS KELLER

In my opinion, Maria T. Jackson could have beaten Sharon Keller in Harris County, Texas back on Tuesday, November 6, 2018 – even without the benefit of straight-ticket voting. How can I say this? Well, if you subtract Maria T. Jackson’s 514,758 straight ticket votes from her 661,844 overall vote total, you will see that 147,086 Harris County, voters cast their ballots specifically for Maria T. Jackson over Sharon Keller. Comparatively speaking, when you subtract Sharon Keller’s 410,060 straight-ticket votes away from her 508,645 overall vote total, you will see that only 98,585 Harris County voters went into the voting booth and cast their ballot for Sharon Keller. What does this mean? Well, at least as Harris County, Texas voters were concerned, Maria T. Jackson was the best candidate in this race, and would have won this matchup (in Harris County) by approximately 48,501 votes even if straight-ticket voting had not been allowed back on Tuesday, November 6, 2018, in the midterm election in my opinion.

CLOSING ANALYSIS ON FRANKLIN VERSUS HERVEY

In my opinion, Ramona Franklin could have beaten Barbara Parker Hervey in Harris County, Texas back on Tuesday, November 6, 2018 – even without the benefit of straight-ticket voting. How can I say this? Well, if you subtract Ramona Franklin’s 514,758 straight ticket votes from her 651,434 overall vote total, you will see that 136,676 Harris County, voters cast their ballots specifically for Ramona Franklin over Barbara Parker Hervey. Comparatively speaking, when you subtract Barbara Parker Hervey’s 410,060 straight-ticket votes away from her 535,534 overall vote total, you will see that only 125,474 Harris County voters went into the voting booth and cast their ballot for Barbara Parker Hervey over Ramona Franklin. What does this mean? Well, at least as Harris County, Texas voters were concerned, Ramona Franklin was the best candidate in this race, and would have won this matchup (in Harris County) by approximately 11,202 votes even if straight-ticket voting had not been allowed back on Tuesday, November 6, 2018, in the midterm election in my opinion.

JUDGE-ELECT LUCIA G. BATES UNSEATED DEMOCRATIC JUDGE DON COFFEY BACK IN THE MARCH 2018 DEMOCRATIC PRIMARY; NO REPUBLICAN OPPOSITION

The story of the remarkable feat by Judge-Elect Lucia G. Bates has largely gone untold. However, her accomplishment didn’t go unnoticed by Houston Business Connections Newspaper©. In case you don’t know, Justice of the Peace Don Coffey was such a favorite to win re-election in the race Harris County Justice of the Peace for Precinct 3, Place 2 back on Tuesday, March 6, 2018, that no Republican candidate even bothered to sign up to run for the bench he held at that time. That’s where Lucia G. Bates, the woman who dared to oppose him in the Democratic Primary comes in. You see, she not only challenged him. She challenged him, but she challenged him and unseated Judge Coffey by garnering 6,117 votes, or 52.40% of the vote. As for Justice of the Peace Don Coffey – who only managed to garner 5,556, or 47.60% of the vote, you can expect to see this matchup again in the 2022 midterm election.
