Lina Hidalgo unseated County Judge Ed Emmett in the race for Harris County Judge back on Tuesday, November 6, 2018, in the midterm election. County Judge-Elect Hidalgo and every other Democrat running countywide rode their "BLUE WAVE" to resounding victories up and down the ballot. However, the data compiled on this page by Aubrey R. Taylor, publisher of Houston Business Connections Newspaper© shows that many local Democrats would have still defeated their Republican counterparts -- even without the 104,698 straight-ticket cushions they enjoyed.
COUNTY JUDGE-ELECT LINA HIDALGO UNSEATED JUDGE ED EMMETT; STRAIGHT-TICKET VOTING WAS A KEY FACTOR IN HIDALGO’S VICTORY

In case you don’t know, County Judge-Elect Lina Hidalgo won, but would have encountered serious difficulties in her quest to unseat Judge Ed Emmett in the race for Harris County Judge without the 104,698 straight-ticket voting cushion she received from Democratic voters in Harris County, Texas back on Tuesday, November 6, 2018, in the midterm election. Here’s why: Lina Hidalgo received 593,946 votes, for 49.76% of the vote. Ed Emmett received 575,101 votes, for 48.18% of the vote. And Eric Gatlin, received 24,583 votes, for 2.06% of the vote. However, when you subtract the 514,758 straight-ticket votes from Lina Hidalgo’s overall vote total, you come up with 79,188 votes. Comparatively speaking, if you subtract the 410,060 straight-ticket votes, Judge Ed Emmett received from his overall vote total of 575,101 you come up with 165,041 votes. Now, please keep in mind that this analysis is not meant to take away from, or diminish the victory achieved by County Judge-Elect Lina Hidalgo, but rather to illustrate how she won this election purely because of the straight-ticket voting cushion she received. How can I say this? I’m glad you asked. In essence, stripping away the straight-ticket votes garnered by both Hidalgo and Emmett, you will see that Judge Emmett would have defeated Judge-Elect Lina Hidalgo by approximately 85,826 votes. Again, this formula is not an exact science, but rather a formula that can be used to measure the strength of candidacies going forward.
