Mayor Sylvester Turner Nominated Ric Campo to Become the New Chair for the Port of Houston Authority, Campo Won Beat Fitzgerald

Mayor Sylvester Turner (left) got his man, Ric Campo (right) was confirmed as the new chair of the Port of Houston Authority on yesterday, Thursday, January 17, 2019. In case you don't remember, Tony Buzbee questioned why Mayor Sylvester Turner nominated Ric Campo over Clyde Fitzgerald to become the next chair for the Port of Houston Authority prior to the vote. Buzbee actually stated that he had nothing against Campo, but felt that Clyde Fitzgerald, one of two men who was still left in the race to become the new chair at the Port of Houston Authority was the better of the two choices.

At 2:00 PM on Thursday, January 17, 2019, a second vote by Houston City Council and Harris County Commissioners to elect a new chair for the Port of Houston Authority took place at 111 East Loop North in Houston, Texas. Businessman Ric Campo, chairman, and CEO of Camden Property Trust won the vote and will now serve as the new chair.

ABOUT RIC CAMPO

According to their website, Richard Campo is Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer of Camden Property Trust. Mr. Campo has served in this capacity since May 1993. As the Chairman and CEO of one of the nation’s largest multifamily Real Estate Investment Trusts, Mr. Campo holds strategic roles within the real estate industry. He is currently a member of the National Association of Real Estate Investment Trusts ('NAREIT') where he serves on the Executive Board, the National Multifamily Housing Council ('NMHC') where he serves on the Executive Committee and was past chairman, and the Urban Land Institute ('ULI').

Mr. Campo began his real estate career after graduating from Oregon State University in 1976. After working for a private Houston real estate company, Mr. Campo co-founded Camden’s predecessor companies in 1982 and has spent almost 30 years building a company of great people that are renowned for their management proficiency, their development and construction capabilities and their savvy in the areas of technology, training, and marketing. He has led the development, management, acquisition, and disposition of real estate properties valued in excess of $10 billion; and under his leadership, Camden has grown from a Texas-based real estate firm with assets valued at $200 million in 1993 to an industry leader with a national footprint and assets valued at more than $8 billion.

Mr. Campo serves on the Board of Directors of several organizations that focus on the economic development, business outlook and future growth of Houston, including Central Houston, Inc., the Greater Houston Community Foundation and the Greater Houston Partnership, and is an Executive Advisory Board Member for the University of Houston, C.T. Bauer College of Business. Mr. Campo is also the Chairman of the Houston First Corporation, a local government corporation that facilitates the city's economic growth through the business of conventions and the arts.

Mr. Campo is a frequent speaker on real estate and development related topics for both industry-related and non-industry conferences and associations and is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA).

The field of candidates expected to run for mayor of Houston in 2019 is beginning to take shape. As it stands right now, attorney Tony Buzbee, attorney Bill King, Dr. Kendall L. Baker, and businesswoman Demetria Smith are expected to challenge Mayor Sylvester Turner on Tuesday, November 5, 2019, in the race to become Houston's next mayor. Hall of Fame Wrestler "Booker T" who was the first candidate to announce his bid to challenge Mayor Turner way back in 2016 is not expected to be in the field of 2019 mayoral contenders. Are You Thinking About Running for Mayor, City Controller, Or City Council on Tuesday, November 5, 2019, in Houston, Texas?

According to the folks at the Houston City Secretary’s Office candidates looking to run for office on Tuesday, November 5, 2019, can pay a filing fee, or they can collect signatures to have their name placed on the ballot. So, if you are a candidate wanting to run for MAYOR OF HOUSTON you can pay a 1,250.00 dollar filing fee or collect signatures to have your name placed on the ballot. If you are a candidate who would like to run for THE CITY OF HOUSTON CONTROLLER position you can pay a 750.00 dollar filing fee or collect signatures to have your name placed on the ballot. And if you are a candidate looking to run for one of the HOUSTON CITY COUNCIL positions you can pay a 500.00 dollar filing fee or collect signatures to have your name placed on the ballot. However, if you plan on going the route of collecting signatures to have your name placed on the ballot, the exact number of signatures needed won’t be determined until sometime in July of this year from what I understand. The Houston City Council is made up of sixteen Council Members, along with Mayor Sylvester Turner and City Controller Chris Brown. All these City leaders are limited to serving two four year terms.

The next general election for the City of Houston will take place on Tuesday, November 5, 2019, with the inauguration for the newly elected City Officials scheduled to take place on Thursday, January 2, 2020.

Currently, the Mayor Pro-Tem for the City of Houston is Ellen Cohen – who also serves as the Houston City Council District C Member. Tony Buzbee Claims Mayor Turner Has Nominated One of His Political Donors to Become the Next Port of Houston Authority Chair

Tony Buzbee questions why Mayor Sylvester Turner nominated Ric Campo over Clyde Fitzgerald to become the next chair for the Port of Houston Authority. In case you don't know, Clyde Fitzgerald is one of two men still left in the race to become the new chair at the Port of Houston Authority. The other frontrunner who will be voted on today, Thursday, January 17, 2019, is Sylvester-Turner-nominated Ric Campo, chairman, and CEO of Camden Property Trust -- a property developer who Buzbee claims is a Mayor Sylvester Turner donor.

Later today at 2:00 PM a second vote by Houston City Council and Harris County Commissioners to elect a new chair for the Port of Houston Authority will take place at 111 East Loop North in Houston, Texas. In case you don't know, the monthly meetings of the Port Commission of the Port of Houston Authority regularly takes place in the port’s Executive Building. But if you need more information on the meeting that’s going to take place later today, I suggest that you call (713)670-2400 to get your questions answered.

What’s going on? Well, earlier this week on Monday, January 14, 2019, a meeting to elect a new Port of Houston chairman was held. However, the two boards could not reach a unanimous conclusion on who is best qualified to succeed Janiece Longoria, who is required to step down due to term limits. Anyways, the two candidates left in the running later today, are Ric Campo, chairman, and CEO of Camden Property Trust, and Clyde Fitzgerald, who currently serves as a Port of Houston Commissioner and president emeritus of the Houston Longshoremen’s Association South Atlantic Gulf Coast District, according to published reports.

What went down at the last meeting? Well, according to a few of my sources, the first go around back on Monday, January 14, 2019, was a mess, as arguments over the correct procedures to follow between the two boards persisted throughout the entire meeting. Disagreements on how the vote itself should happen gave birth to an almost chaotic scene of confusion and what to do next questions, as the new Harris County Judge, Lina Hidalgo struggled to maintain order, according to sources.

TURNER APPEARS TO BE FOR CAMPO

From the reports I’ve seen and other research I’ve conducted it appears clear that Mayor Sylvester Turner is pulling for Rick Campo, who according to Tony Buzbee, a well-known attorney who is challenging Mayor Turner on Tuesday, November 5, 2019, in the race for mayor of Houston. In case you haven’t heard, Buzbee is fuming, because he couldn’t get his “OP-ED” posted below, published by the Houston Chronicle. However, according to Buzbee, the Houston Chronicle did see fit to publish an “OP-ED” penned by Mayor Sylvester Turner.

Why wouldn’t Sylvester Turner prioritize experience when nominating a new Port of Houston Authority chairman?

For the second time this week, Houston City Council and the Harris County Commissioners Court will attempt to elect a new Port of Houston Authority Chairman. I’ll be tracking, with great interest, what happens at the Thursday 2:00 PM vote, and you should too.

At Monday’s vote, the candidate pool consisted of three men: two highly experienced commissioners and one apartment builder. Then it went down to two frontrunners, and neither received a majority vote — an absurdity in and of itself.

One of the frontrunners was Clyde Fitzgerald, Port Commissioner and president emeritus of the International Longshoremen’s Association South Atlantic and Gulf Coast District.

The other frontrunner was Sylvester-Turner-nominated Ric Campo, chairman, and CEO of Camden Property Trust—a property developer and Turner campaign donor.

The decision seems achingly simple. Experience an intimate knowledge of the maritime industry is key with a position like this.

But Turner’s nomination begs the question: Why? One candidate is a world-renowned port expert upon whose decades of hard work and sweat the port was built. Fitzgerald is not simply a commissioner; he literally worked the docks his whole life.

Nothing against Mr. Campo, he’s a highly successful developer, but why would Turner nominate someone with zero maritime experience to a position as important as Port of Houston Authority chairman?

The Port is the foundation of our local, state and national economy and has placed our city at the center of international trade. It’s ranked 1st in the United States in foreign waterborne tonnage, 1st in U.S. imports, and 1st in U.S. export tonnage with over 247 million tons of cargo moving through it each year. It ranks 2nd in the entire nation for total tonnage.

I’ve learned that if I can’t easily discern a person’s motivation for doing something, the answer is money."
