Love filled the air right before the turn of the New Year as outgoing 177th Criminal District Court Judge Robert C. Johnson tied the not with the love of his lie, Attorney DeMonica Gladney.
Judge Robert Johnson won a hotly-contested Democratic Party Primary race back in 2016 against David Singer and then unseated Ryan Patrick (Republican) in the 2016 Presidential Election.
In the 2020 Democratic Party Primary, a testament to his stellar performance the prior four years, Judge Robert Johnson did not get challenged in the 2020 Party Primary or the 2020 General Election.
In the 2022 Midterm Election, Judge Robert Johnson ran for a higher bench on the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals Place 6 against a Republican named Jesse McClure and came up short.
In the 2024 Democratic Party Primary, Judge Johnson ran for the Democratic nomination unopposed but lost his re-election bid to a Republican named Emily Detoto by a razor-thin margin.
With Judge Robert Johnson’s loss, only three African American males hold countywide benches in Harris County, Texas. Judge Tracy D. Good presides over the 333rd Civil District Court, Judge Sedrick T. Walker, II presides over the County Criminal Court at Law No. 11, and Judge DaSean Jones presides over the 180th Criminal District Court and is in the fight of his life to hold on to it.

Besides becoming the beautiful bride of Judge Robert Johnson, Attorney DeMonica Gladney currently works as Senior Counsel at ExxonMobil.
“I am a corporate attorney, writer, poet, best-selling author, and inspirational speaker,” says Attorney Gladney on her LINKED-IN profile.
She states, “I am Senior Counsel for ExxonMobil, where I have practiced for 30 years, following my tenure as the first African American Briefing Attorney for the Texas 14th Court of Appeals.”
According to Attorney Gladney, she has over 20+ years of commercial law experience and provides legal support to ExxonMobil’s chemical business and sustainability organization.

I’m not sure what’s next for Judge Robert Johnson. However, I’m sure that we haven’t heard the last of him. His presence on the 177th Criminal District Court bench in Harris County, Texas, leaves a huge void. With only Judge DaSean Jones, Judge Tracy D. Good, and Judge Sedrick T. Walker, II, holding countywide benches, the upcoming election between Judge DeSean Jones and his Republican challenger, Tami C. Pierce, could set the tone for what’s going to happen in the 2026 Midterm Elections, in Harris County, Texas.
