Unfortunately, many of the African-American Democratic female candidates who were seeking nominations on Tuesday, May 22, 2018, suffered major defeats in their respective runoff races. In case you haven’t heard, Ruby Faye Woolridge lost her bid to become the Democratic nominee for U.S. Congress for the 6th Congressional District to fellow Democrat Jana Lynne Sanchez. Tawana Walter-Cadien lost her bid to become the Democratic nominee for U.S. Congress for the 10th Congressional District of Texas to fellow Democrat Mike Seigel. Dr. Letitia Plummer’s hopes of becoming the Democratic nominee for U.S. Congress for the 22nd Congressional District were also dashed as her campaign could not keep pace with her fellow Democratic rival Sri Preston Kulkarni. Gayle Young Mitchell and Roslyn “Rozzy” Shorter suffered similar fates in their bids to become Democratic nominees for the Harris County Clerk and Harris County District Clerk positions respectively. Gayle Young Mitchell lost to her fellow Democratic rival Diane Trautman in the race for Harris County Clerk. Diane Trautman must now face off against Republican (incumbent) Stan Stanart on Tuesday, November 6, 2018.
