ANALYSIS BY AUBREY R. TAYLOR

One of the hottest races on the Democratic Runoff ballot for Harris County, Texas is the race for Harris County District Clerk between Marilyn Burgess and Roslyn “Rozzy” Shorter. For Shorter to win this race she must have a robust African American voter turnout. However, whether she’ll get the turnout she needs or not remains to be seen as early voting get’s underway today, Monday, May 14, 2018. In case you don’t already know, Marilyn Burgess led all vote-getters back on Tuesday, March 6, 2018, in the Democratic Party Primary race for Harris County District Clerk by a pretty wide margin. However, she was forced into a runoff with Shorter because she (Burgess) failed to capture a majority of the vote. TALE OF THE TAPE: Marilyn Burgess received 10,315 absentee ballots back on Tuesday, March 6, 2018, and Roslyn “Rozzy” Shorter received 3,260 absentee ballots cast for her. Marilyn Burgess received 30,503 early votes during the Democratic Party Primary early voting period, and Roslyn “Rozzy” Shorter received 13,709 early votes to her credit. ELECTION DAY VOTING TOTALS: Marilyn Burgess received 28,957 Election Day votes back on Tuesday, March 6, 2018, and Roslyn “Rozzy” Shorter received 16,206 Election Day votes. THE FINAL VOTE TOTALS: Marilyn Burgess received 69,775 votes for 49.22% of the overall vote, and Roslyn "Rozzy" Shorter received 33,175 votes for 23.40%, of the overall vote. Kevin Howard (another African American candidate in the race) received 21,578 votes for 15.22% of the vote, and Michael Jordan (not the hall of fame Basketball Player) received 17,220 votes for 12.15% of the vote. EARLY VOTING RUNOFF LOCATIONS AND HOURS: The early voting period will last from today, Monday, May 14, 2018, through Friday, May 18, 2018 – and Election Day voting will take place on Tuesday, May 22, 2018. Again, the polls will be open from 7:00a.m. to 7:00p.m. for your convenience.

A few of the Democratic Party Primary and Republican Party Primary Election Candidates Have Some Unfinished Business to Attend to on Tuesday, May 22, 2018, in Harris County

There’s a lot of talk about Texas being a red state floating around. Sure, traditionally that has been the case. But after the historic showing put on display by Texas Democrats back on Tuesday, March 6, 2018, reasonable minds would have to agree that the aforementioned distinction could possibly be on the verge of becoming a hue of a different shade in the very near future – if Democrats have anything to say about it in the fall. Yes, Tuesday, November 6, 2018, the day when Democratic hopefuls and Republican hopefuls are set to face off is still a little way’s off. So, let’s not forget about Tuesday, May 22, 2018 a day when Democrats and Republicans who failed to capture a majority of the vote back on Tuesday, March 6, 2018, must square off once more against their fellow inner-party rival in hopes of earning the “HIGHLY COVETED DISTINCTION” of “PARTY NOMINEE” and a right to appear on the Tuesday, November 6, 2018 Midterm Election ballot for their respective party.

IMPORTANT RUNOFF ELECTION DATES

The first day of early voting is on Monday, May 14, 2018; and the last day to vote early in the Runoff Election is on Friday, May 18, 2018 – so don’t forget to vote early.
