It deserves telling here. After completing college and military service, Robinson was wrongfully convicted of committing a felony in 1986. Following his release from prison after serving 10 years, he spent the next five years earning the money to pay for his own DNA test in order to prove his innocence. He succeeded and was pardoned by Gov. George W. Bush in 2000. Robinson has since earned a law degree, become fluent in Mandarin and now heads a consulting service specializing in international business. We believe he is the right man to lead District D at a time when it is at a historic crossroads. |
Election Day: A date with Destiny

I was raised to believe if you are truly a part of something, you commit yourself whole-heartedly to support that something. After your opinion is heard and the decision is made, you work your hardest to make that decision work.
It’s important for everyone to know what they believe in and what they are apart of as American citizens.
Many people in the world dream of becoming an American citizen. For some, it is their life’s ambition. And, it is always more than just for the economic opportunity. For many, it is the desire of political freedom to voice their opinion and have their opinion heard without fear of reprisal or persecution they long for most.
But, what does voicing that opinion really mean if you are not committed to the success of the country, especially if the way to that success goes in a direction that is against your opinion?
We, as Americans, are a people from many nations united in our common desire to create a “Land of Opportunity” for those who choose to join with us as citizens. We, the people, are of many traditions and cultures bound together by the thread of our commitment to “Truth, Justice and the American Way” But, what does that commitment mean if we turn away from the democratic process that makes “OUR” country the “Voice of Democracy” heard around the world?
Our ancestor and elders, men, women, boys and girls have through time shed blood and given of their mortal essence to obtain and protect of the freedoms many of us take for granted such as the right to move freely about the country without restriction or someone’s permission; the right to equal access to a basic education; the right to the opportunity to get and keep property and be prosperous; the right to have and voice one’s opinion without fear of reprisal and the right to decide who will protect and represent our interests as a people and country.
Arguably, protecting these freedoms is even more important that enjoying them! We must strive in our daily lives to fight to keep these rights safe, not just for ourselves, but also for those who will come after us.
As Houstonians and proud Texans, we all know about the historic struggles to keep our freedoms and independence. Our city is named after one of the founding fathers of Texas, Sam Houston. How much greater should our commitment be to protect, improve and pass on the freedoms we enjoy today?
Every year, we, as Americans, have the opportunity to express our opinion on what will have an impact on our work, our lives, our children’s future and our communities. Every year we have the opportunity to decide what we will let influence our Quality of Life. But, in order to make the best choice, we must know how each decision will change our condition.
Every election is a critical moment in time to change the world in which we live, a world that has been given to us to protect, improve and pass on to those who will come after us.
It is this awesome responsibility we must exercise that will determine how we will live, how our children will be educated and what we will leave as our legacy.
For some, it is an act that is taken for granted. And, for some, it is a dream that has been realized after much suffering, sacrifice and effort.
But, we, the people, must acknowledge what an awesome obligation and challenge it is that has been placed upon our shoulders. How do we do this, you may ask? Educate yourself about the facts, issues, the candidates, and the choices. Strengthen yourself to make the choice that may look hard. Know what the condition is that you truly desire. Become apart of the informed electorate.
Then, the answer and the solution are one in the same, VOTE!
Your vote is your voice. When the time comes you will need to decide if you are truly committed to the process we call Democracy. Will you remain silent, and let others have an opinion for you? Or, will you use your vote to say clearly, “I AM an American and I WILL make a difference!”
November 5, 2013 is your date with destiny, what will you do?

Mayor Annise Parker is currently serving her second term as the mayor of Houston. In the Tuesday, November 5, 2013 Mayoral Election Mayor Parker is facing off against Ben Hall, Don Cook, Keryl Burgess Douglas, Victoria Lane, Michael Fitzsimmons, Derek Jenkins, Charyl Drab, and Eric Dick.
However, based on the result of the only televised debate which took place on PBS on Tuesday, November 8, 2013; Mayor Parker, Ben Hall and Keryl Burgess Douglas are the candidates who really stood out in my opinion. Other candidates who took the stage along with the trio of Parker, Hall, and Douglas were: Michael Fitzsimmons and Eric Dick.
The debate was put on by Houston PBS and The League of Women Voters of Houston Education Fund.
Mayor Annise Parker Is Asking for Your Vote!
Mayor Annise D. Parker serves as the Executive Officer of the City. As the City's chief administrator and official representative, the Mayor is responsible for the general management of the City and for seeing that all laws and ordinances are enforced. Administrative duties include the appointments, with Council approval, of department heads and persons serving on advisory boards.
As Executive Officer, the Mayor administers oaths and signs all motions, resolutions and ordinances passed by City Council. The Mayor also serves a legislative function, presiding over City Council with voting privileges. The Mayor is responsible for advising Council of the City's financial condition and presents to Council an annual budget for approval.
Born into a family of meager financial means, Benjamin Hall, III has experienced firsthand the struggle that accompanies difficult economic times. Ben also encountered challenges in the academic world, where teachers doubted his ability to rise above his humble beginnings and achieve higher education. However, he knew he had the potential to succeed and refused to compromise his goals.

Ben Hall Is Asking for Your Vote!
In 1975, Ben enrolled at the University of South Carolina, where he received a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1977, with honors. His thirst for knowledge and desire to help others led him to continue his education at Duke University; obtaining a Master of Divinity degree in 1979 and a Ph.D. in 1985. Others might have stopped at that point, but Ben saw a real opportunity to help underrepresented communities as an attorney. In 1986, Ben earned a law degree from Harvard Law School and began working at the Vinson & Elkins law firm in Houston, Texas. He went on to serve as the City Attorney for the City of Houston in Mayor Bob Lanier’s administration.
Through his legal practice, Ben has applied the principles of courage, tenacity and justice that he learned as a young man; speaking out on behalf of those who need a strong voice to champion their causes. In 2000, Ben founded the nationally recognized Hall Law Firm. Ben is grateful for his professional successes, but also rough his numerous pro bono efforts on behalf of groups, corporations and individuals in need of representation.
Ben recognizes his personal blessings. He describes his family as his greatest treasure. Ben and Saundra, his wife of 31 years, have two sons. The entire Hall family remains committed to serving the Houston community.

Keryl Douglas Is Asking for Your Vote!
Keryl Douglas is an accomplished mediator and attorney, legal journalist and analyst. Keryl is also an appointed ad litem for local courts; a frequent moderator, panelist/educator for diverse legal seminars, and structured settlement consultant.
Attorney Keryl Douglas graduated summa cum laude from Thurgood Marshall School of Law. She received her M.S. in Chemistry, magna cum laude, from Texas Southern University; B.S. in Biology, cum laude, from Florida A&M University; completed coursework for a Ph.D. in Epidemiology at UTHSC.
Her diverse professional experience includes National NAACP’s Regional Director for Region VI, encompassing 250 units across Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas, Oklahoma, and New Mexico. She was co-architect of the NAACP’s historic 2000 National Voter Mobilization Campaign. She served for nearly a decade as Executive Director of NAACP-Houston.
