ANNOUNCEMENT: Missouri City Update on City Centre at Quail Valley and Recreation and Tennis Center

The input of citizens and their feedback also played a key role in the development of these two new fine facilities. The City Centre at Quail Valley, located at 2880 La Quinta Dr., hosts weddings, business and community meetings, tournaments, birthday parties and festive occasions. It is also home to The Grille, a casual dining restaurant that serves breakfast, brunch, lunch and dinner. The Recreation and Tennis Center, located at 2701 Cypress Point Dr., has a full-size gymnasium, a Kid Zone, multi-purpose rooms, tennis courts, batting cages, the latest cardio and weight equipment, an outdoor walking trail and tennis clinics. 

The City of Missouri City Recently Announced Update on City the Centre at Quail Valley and Recreation and Tennis Center 

In 2008, an overwhelming 72 percent of Missouri City residents voted to approve a $17.5 million bond referendum to fund two essential parks projects—the Quail Valley Golf Course, which includes the City Centre at Quail Valley, and the Recreation and Tennis Center. In addition to the bond funds, the City received a $950,000 grant from the Texas Parks and Wildlife Association for the Recreation and Tennis Center project. We are pleased to report that both new facilities are operational and have received rave reviews from residents and visitors.

Citizen input and feedback was integral to the development of the projects.

Here are highlights to date:

Quail Valley Golf Course Project

The City took possession of the property in 2008 through eminent domain due to the former owners’ extreme neglect of the property, the concern of its possible sale to developers, the negative effect on property values, and the loss of green space and recreational opportunities. The decline of the maintenance and operation of the property posed detrimental effects on surrounding subdivisions and the City as a whole. Subsequently, there has been a complete renovation of the El Dorado Golf Course, upgrades to the La Quinta Golf Course, repairs of several bridges that were considered safety hazards, the mowing of high grass/removal of weeds/landscaping, and the construction of the City Centre at Quail Valley. All repairs, upgrades, improvements and construction were essential to the operations of the Course.

Funding of the project includes $3.1 million to take possession of QVGC through eminent domain, $7.2 million for the complete redesign/construction of the El Dorado course (design, construction management services, materials testing, site preparation, construction, professional services fees, some improvements to the La Quinta course and miscellaneous expenses) $7.4 million for the City’s negotiated settlement offer for the purchase of the property (the initial $3.1 million paid is included in this amount), $9.7 million for construction of the City Centre at Quail Valley, and $1.1 million for a new cart barn.

Recreation and Tennis Center Project

Funding of the project includes $1 million for land acquisition, $5.8 million for construction of the center and $51,866 for improvements to MacNaughton Park.

To date, both centers are progressing well: in 2011, QVGC hosted 56,082 rounds of play and in 2012, the course hosted 58,100 rounds—a marked increase. The Recreation and Tennis Center currently has 823 members and in the tennis programs, there are 55 participants in the junior program, 28 leagues, totaling 358 participants, and 53 players taking private lessons.

Missouri City’s new first-class facilities are regarded as two of Fort Bend County’s premier venues. The City Centre at Quail Valley, located at 2880 La Quinta Dr., hosts weddings, business and community meetings, tournaments, birthday parties and festive occasions. Back in the 2011 General Election face off in Missouri City for the District A City Council seat Rodney Griffin came within 33 votes of unseating the incumbent Bobby Marshall. However, a dismal 6.52% voter turnout in the (6) six precinct district largely made up of African-American voters proved a little too much for Griffin to overcome in his quest to unseat the incumbent. But Rodney L. Griffin is back on the ballot again in the 2013 General Election to be held on Saturday, May 11, 2013. However, he's not facing the incumbent alone this time around. Yolanda Ford, a local architectural designer and urban planner is also in the race seeking to unseat Councilman Bobby Marshall.

Businessman Rodney Griffin continues to campaign tirelessly for the revitalization of Texas Parkway. He has served the Missouri City community as the Presiding Election Judge for many terms. Presently he serve Precinct 2059 as the Democratic Chair and on the State Democratic Executive Committee in Austin. According to Griffin he was the first State (Texas) party official to endorse then candidate Obama for president (Feb, 22, 2007). During the de centennial census, he made sure that every person in the Missouri City community was counted.
