From my estimates, by the 2026 Midterm Election, it’s going to become next to impossible for African Americans to win any countywide races in Harris County, Texas. How can I say this? Well, I can say this, because if you look at the current make-up of “THE BLACK POLITICAL STRUCTURE” in Harris County, Texas, Blacks are losing more and more ground as a power structure. Even though Blacks overwhelmingly support the Democratic Party, African Americans are the only ethnic group that’s not being compensated for their loyalty.
Right here in Harris County, Texas, at (HCC) Houston Community College, we have three African American females on the board, however, nothing has been done about Dr. Cesar Maldonado’s racist policies or the shame he’s brought upon this community college. Why? And even though several lawsuits have been filed against Dr. Cesar Maldonado, and Houston Community College, neither the Harris County Democratic Party, NAACP, National Urban League, Black Elected Officials, or so-called Black Leaders have spoken up and denounced Maldonado, for his ‘alleged’ discrimination against “MY PEOPLE” who appear to have been victimized by this racist chancellor, who happens to be Hispanic.
Why hasn’t Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo, Harris County Commissioner Adrian Garcia, and Congresswoman Sylvia Garcia spoken up about the third lawsuit that has been filed against Houston Community College by attorney Ben Hall by 57 more Black current and former HCC employees? I’ll tell you why not, it’s because these people don’t care about the Black community, our needs, or our ongoing struggle. And beyond that, our so-called Black leaders like Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee, Harris County Commissioner Rodney Ellis, and Mayor Sylvester Turner act as “GATEKEEPERS” to keep rank-and-file, African Americans in line.
So, today, June 18, 2022, is “ELECTION DAY” and a new HCC School Board member will be selected to serve out the remainder of the term of Rhonda Skillern-Jones, who served as the District II trustee before she stepped down, after cutting a plea deal with the feds for her part in a contracting and “BRIBERY SCHEME” while serving on the HISD School Board.

WHO SHOULD WIN TODAY?
In my opinion, Charlene Ward Johnson (left), and Kathy “Lynch” Gunter (right), are both a breath of fresh air. And if you ask me, both of these duly qualified are uniquely gifted and prepared to step right in and lead from day one. So, no matter who wins tonight, the first order of business by the Houston Community College Board should be to get rid of Dr. Cesar Maldonado. Sure he’s already looking for a new job, according to my sources, but he needs to go right now!

HCC WAS RECENTLY HIT WITH A THIRD FEDERAL DISCRIMINATION LAWSUIT

In case you don’t remember, less than two weeks after federal district court Judge Lynne Hughes denied HCC’s motions to dismiss two previously filed racial discrimination lawsuits, HCC is now being sued by 57 more black employees for discrimination. This new lawsuit, which was filed several weeks ago, outlines repeated discriminatory conduct at the college under the administration of Chancellor Cesar Maldonado. The pattern of racial misconduct “alleged” in this new suit follows the same course as the prior two lawsuits: well-qualified and trained black employees are deliberately overlooked or not promoted while less-qualified Hispanic and white candidates are given “PREFERENTIAL TREATMENT” for positions they have not earned. As a result of these “DISCRIMINATORY PRACTICES,” alleged in these lawsuits more than 90% of the most senior Black HCC executives at the time Maldonado became chancellor have been displaced, fired, or removed from their duties.
Where are the HCC trustees? How can they just sit by and let this college be run into the ground by Dr. Cesar Maldonado? Enrollment is down. And another one of the HCC School Board trustees is being sued for sexual harassment with a subordinate female employee. And on top of that, the local sheriff (Ed Gonzalez) once considered a rising Democratic star on the national stage, has been relegated to an afterthought. Why? Well, Sheriff Ed Gonzalez’s chance of becoming the ICE director is fleeting because of alleged domestic violence that was reported by a female in the chancellor’s office.
And, allegations of HCC police officers altering bodycam footage are now being reported by current and former members of HCC’s police force. All of that being said, HCC’s current School Board trustees appear to be asleep at the wheel.
Any good Dr. Cesar Maldonado could have done for HCC has long passed. Bye, Bye, Felicia! The HCC School Board Trustees must act immediately to replace Maldonado, resolve these embarrassing lawsuits, and take back control of Houston Community College.
We deserve better, and HCC’s Trustees are not doing their job! If they won’t change things at the college, then the voters need to change them at the earliest opportunity possible.

Trustee Dave Wilson is seen by some as a polarizing figure. Many years ago, Dave Wilson grabbed national headlines for a clever political strategy he used to unseat well-known 24-year Black incumbent HCC School Board Member by the name of Bruce Austin. However, as clever as his strategy was, many folks bashed Dave and publicly criticized him for running a campaign that some so-called Black leaders felt was misleading. Back then, Al Sharpton, a civil rights icon, yelled at Dave, and even Jimmy Kimmel joked about him. Why? Well, one of Dave's mailers stated that he was endorsed by Ron Wilson, who was a longtime African American state legislator whose name was very recognizable to Blacks in the Houston area. Is it Daves's fault that the receivers of his flyer failed to read the fine print on the mailer? So, for the record, Dave's flyer explained that he had a cousin by the name of "RON WILSON" who lived in Iowa, at the time the flyer was printed and mailed.
THE BLACK COMMUNITY NEEDS TRUSTEE DAVE WILSON RIGHT NOW
Dave Wilson, at this point, is one of the people currently sitting on the HCC School Board who has unquestioned courage. Trustee Dave Wilson has already demonstrated that he's not afraid to stand up and fight for what's right. He's also a man of faith, intestinal fortitude, and love for the Black community. All of that being said, my people are the ones who helped Dave Wilson unseat Bruce Austin by 26 votes, all those years ago. So, it's only fair for "THE BLACK COMMUNITY" to ask Trustee Dave Wilson, Dr. Cynthia Lenton Gary, Dr. Reagan Flowers, and Dr. Pretta VanDible Stallworth to do the right thing by our people. What's the right thing? FIRE DR. CESAR MALDONADO, and restore decency and dignity to the HCC School Board at once.

In case you don’t know, African Americans have celebrated some great achievements since, June 19, 1865, the day Union soldiers arrived in Galveston to bring news of freedom to the last 250,000 enslaved Black people in Texas. That said, I’m not proud of the fact that it took two years after President Abraham Lincoln’s signing of the Emancipation Proclamation, for the word that my ancestors were free to make it to the plantations here in Texas. But nonetheless, I’m honored to declare that I’m a “FREE MAN” living my dream right now.
FREEDOM AIN’T FREE
In my opinion, too many of my people (Black folks), are still living on “MENTAL PLANTATIONS” right now Texas. And when it comes to Harris County, there’s a lot of work that’s still left to do as we press forward towards Tuesday, November 8, 2022, and beyond. That said, in my professional opinion, if we don’t break the “MENTAL CHAINS” that people are using to try and hold us, hostage, we’re going to lose the “POLITICAL STRENGTH” that our forefathers fought, bled, and died for us to enjoy.
FREEDOM TO CHOOSE
It’s important for my people (Black folks), to understand that voting is a personal decision. And nobody has ownership over our “GOD-GIVEN” right to pursue our own individual destiny as “GOD-ALMIGHTY” gives us strength. Nobody has the right to try and “SHAME US” into supporting their candidacies. Nobody has the right to tell us that we’re not Black if we don’t cast our vote for them. I’ll bet our ancestors were turning over in their graves back during the 2022 Presidential Election when they heard Joe Biden say that black voters who were torn between voting for him, or President Trump “ain’t black,” remarks that he was forced to apologize for – but I digress.

The fight for Texas is going to be fierce. And believe it or not, Deirdre Gilbert, a “RISING POLITICAL STAR” is actually “IN THE DRIVER’S SEAT” right now. How? Well, with polls Gov. Greg Abbott (Republican) with a sizable lead over Beto O’Rourke (Democrat), in the Lone Star State. So, no matter how you look at it, Deirdre Gilbert running as an "INDEPENDENT CANDIDATE" for Governor of Texas on Tuesday, November 8, 2022, is going to cause some serious problems in urban areas across the State of Texas -- especially since there won't be any straight-ticket voting.
MEET DEIRDRE GILBERT
Deirdre Gilbert has earned her M.A. in Educational Administration, and her B.S. in Political Science and Mass Communication (Cum Laude) from Prairie View A&M University; she is a native Houstonian, a graduate of the public school system attending elementary, middle, and high school graduating from Madison high. Deirdre has resided in Harris County for over 40 years before settling in Fort Bend County for over 10 years. Deirdre is an educator with 26 years of experience working in Houston, Aldine, and Fort Bend School Districts and is a former Houston Independent School District teacher’s union representative.
Her mother was a key influence in her life. She was a community activist and the first black woman to run for Constable in Harris County. Deirdre is best known in the community and around the country for her fight, both personally and publicly, for justice for those of medical negligence. After losing her only child, Jocelyn, because of medical negligence, Deirdre confronted the medical community and the state agencies that support it. She stood not only for herself and in memory of her daughter, but on behalf of people around the state and across the country who have felt powerless in the wake of such devastating loss.
Deirdre has worked tirelessly in her own community of Sienna Plantation, further, she’s worked on issues such as denial of voting rights in local elections within Missouri City, and MUD District issues. She has spoken before the Texas Legislature and U.S. Congress in Washington D.C on civil rights. Deirdre has helped to shape legislation regarding whistleblowers, medical malpractice, and education. Deirdre is not afraid of a battle and is willing to speak for those who are unable to speak for themselves. In addition to helping those in her community, state, local and national, she also works for a non-profit that helps veterans find employment.
Deirdre has been capturing the attention of media nationally for some time. In 2007, she released her first book entitled, “Can I Just Have a Little Bit? A Little Bit of What?” Her recent work, “Momma Help Me Please,” was inspired by the first love of her life, her daughter Jocelyn.
Deirdre is an avid speaker at book clubs, churches, and professional, civic, and community organizations.
She has been featured in Beautifully Said Magazine and African American Newspaper; mentioned in Harper’s Magazine by Ralph Nader a strong advocate for justice, received professional recognition in Women on the Move section of the Houston Business Journal, and featured in Bronze Magazine several times and in Saved Magazine along with other powerful women in ministry such as Joyce Meyers. Deirdre was mentioned in Washington Post, Stat News, and several online publications regarding her stance on medical malpractice. This journey has led to the first Blog Talk Show “Life” Radio Show that focused on “victims” of medical malpractice and then rebranded with another show called “Med/Mal Radio Show-What’s Your Verdict and just recently Malpractice Diaries-MD –We Tell the Secrets they Keep.
Since 2011, Deirdre Gilbert has not backed down from her challenges, founding non-profits such as the National Medical Malpractice Advocacy Association (NMMAA), serving as its National Director, and Executive Director of the Jocelyn Y. Dickson Foundation. NMMAA is a non-partisan educational organization that was created to promote transparency, accountability and integrity in the medical profession. Through NMMAA’s educational endeavor, she advocates high standards of ethics and morality to ensure non-abuse of the powers entrusted to the profession by the American people. Under her direction, these non-profits have gained support from members of Congress, garnered attention and recognition among state lawmakers, and sparked open dialogue and inquiry into medical negligence. With her husband of 7 years, Mr. Kurt E. Gilbert, beside her, she has spoken boldly before Medical Boards, Government Agencies, the State Legislature, and the US Congress calling for repeal of TORT Reforms, review of the Information Act as it relates to medical doctors, greater accountability in the hospital industry, and Justice for All who fall victim to healthcare abuse. The core of her message is consistent, Justice for All.
Deirdre achieved a milestone twice, first when she was asked to speak at the Whistleblower’s Summit in Washington, DC 2016, and again in 2019 when she provided testimony at the Senate Judiciary Committee Hearings about the devastating effects of medical malpractice. She has spearheaded the nation’s 1st Medical Malpractice Conference that convened medical professionals, attorneys, civil rights leaders, social justice organizations, patient safety advocates, and legislative leaders. Her third milestone was when she threw her hat in the political ring and decided to run for Justice of the Peace, Pct. 2, Fort Bend County, TX. Deirdre assisted with having H.R. 614 resolution filed in the Texas Legislature, recognizing Medical Malpractice in the State of Texas. In addition, Deirdre created a new initiative, “The Medical Malpractice Right to Justice Project’s mission to assist those harmed by medical negligence and whose cases were never heard in a court of law, to bring these cases before a court based on evidence ranging from misstated/understated or erroneous death certificates, misstated/understated/overstated or erroneous expert reports, altered or falsified medical records, the existence of individual, hospital, physician, and institutional agencies conflict of interest.
Deirdre Gilbert was instrumental in getting the 1st proclamation in 2013 recognizing July as Medical Malpractice Month. Since then, the organization has been given recognition from the State of Missouri’s Governor Jeremiah W. Nixon, the State of Colorado’s Governor John Hickenlooper, and the State of Georgia’s Governor Nathan Deal. The organization has also received several congressional, state, and local recognition. Deirdre created the first PSA that aired on Harkins movie screens across the states in September 2016, promoting and educating the public on “Preventable Medical Mistakes.” In 2019 NMMAA received the 1st Enrolled House Resolution 86 (R) HR 614 by the House of Representatives of the 86th Texas Legislature recognizing July as Medical Malpractice Month.
Deirdre Gilbert was vital in the creation of the first chapter of attorneys in the State of Louisiana and Virginia that have acquired lobbyist that handles the legislative needs of NMMAA. The lobbying action is geared toward bill drafting and legislative reform to help those harmed by egregious acts of medical malpractice.
Deirdre has worked tirelessly with The Government Accountability Project, The Black Heritage Society, Greater Houston Coalition for Justice, Make It Safe Campaign, The National Association for Probate Reform & Advocacy, NAACP-Health Chair Committee Missouri City Chapter, NAACP-Fort Bend-Wharton Chapter, National Action Network to create the first medical malpractice health initiative, National Congress of Black Women, State of Texas Sunset Advisory Committee.

At the end of the day, the judicial races are the most important races on the ballot. That said, who we allow to put on that black robe and occupy judicial benches (especially in Harris County, Texas) matters a great deal. Over the years, through straight-ticket voting, and folks going into the polls playing "Eeny, Meeny, Miny, Moe" we've allowed a few bad folks to slip through the cracks. Now, I'm not trying to play party politics in any way, shape, or form, with my words. All I'm trying to say is that nobody is perfect, but if we make it our goal to elevate people who fear God and have a backbone into positions of authority, every one of us will be afforded the opportunity to live our best life.
