Mayor Yolanda Ford, Fred G. Taylor, and former Mayor Pro Tem, Robin Elackatt will face off in the race for Mayor on November 3, 2020, in Missouri City, Texas

AUBREY R. TAYLOR REPORTS©

Mayor Yolanda Ford is being challenged by Fred G. Taylor and former City Councilman Robin Elackatt on Tuesday, November 3, 2020. At this point, it is beginning to look more and more like Mayor Yolanda Ford could possibly win the race outright, or have to face off against Fred G. Taylor in a December runoff to hold on to her seat. At this time, former Mayor Pro Tem Robin Elackatt appears to be in over his head. Has he even gotten the memo that Missouri City, Texas is nearly 50% African American? Remember, Elackatt has never run a citywide campaign before -- and his inexperience is beginning to show. Yes, he represented Missouri City, Texas’ (District C) on City Council a few years ago. But you have to keep in mind, that back on Saturday, May 11, 2013, when he was on the ballot running unopposed he only received 211 overall votes. Then, when it was time for him to run for re-election on May 9, 2015, he withdrew himself from the race on March 3, 2015, citing his belief that Missouri City, Texas should have term limits for councilmembers and elected officials – but I digress. However, before I move on, somebody needs to tell Robin Elackatt that his chances of becoming the next mayor of Missouri City, Texas without at the very least, acting like he values the African American vote are slim to none. Memo to Robin Elackatt: many African Americans loved long-time Mayor Allen Owen, but even with his very diverse contingent of supporters living all throughout Missouri City, Texas, he still lost his seat once the general election was placed on the November 2018 ballot. Not sure what I’m talking about? Well, here is a refresher -- back on Tuesday, November 6, 2018, Mayor Allen Owen received 8,136 votes, for 36.06% of the vote. Yolanda Ford received 7,886 votes for 34.96% of the vote. Fred G. Taylor, who is challenging Mayor Yolanda Ford on November 3, 2020, received a whopping 6,538 votes for 28.98% of the vote back on Tuesday, November 6, 2018. However, since neither of the three candidates received a majority of the vote, Mayor Allen Owen ended up having to face Yolanda Ford on Saturday, December 8, 2018, in a runoff election that he eventually lost by only 373 votes. Again, Mayor Allen Owen had a much broader base than Robin Elackatt has at this point. Why is this significant? Well, even if Robin Elackatt is able to find a way to split Mayor Yolanda Ford and Fred G. Taylor, on Tuesday, November 3, 2020, his lack of outreach over into the African American community will more than likely come back to bite him in the butt. How can I say this? Well, Robin Elackatt would face the challenge of trying to win a December runoff race with virtually no African American support -- if he even makes it that far. How can I make this claim? Well, Missouri City, Texas only has one other race on the ballot where a plurality may not be reached on Tuesday, November 3, 2020 -- it’s the race for Missouri City, Texas – City Council At-Large Position 2 – and it involves three African American candidates: Chris Preston – the incumbent, is being challenged by James Mable and Lynn Clouser which I believe is headed to a December runoff. Why? Well, back on Saturday, May 7, 2016, when Chris Preston was running for re-election against Cynthia Lenton Gary, an African American female, he did not win that race without a runoff. As a matter of fact, Councilman Preston only beat his challenger Cynthia Lenton Gary, by a razor-thin margin of (9) nine votes back in 2016. Yes, you heard me right, Councilman Chris Preston only beat the last African American woman he faced by 9 votes back on Saturday, June 11, 2016 -- and it took a runoff for him to do it. That being said, the only person on the ballot in the race for Missouri City, Texas – At-Large Position 2, who could possibly win the race outright is Lynn Clouser – based on the data I’ve studied.
