KEY FORMER 2017 CANDIDATES FOR POSITION 7 SEAT ENDORSE WOODY OWENS IN JUNE 10 RUNOFF ELECTION

Sherry Stockwell, Terry Gray, and G.C. Sonny Atkins

Woody Owens Earns Key Endorsements from Stockwell, Atkins and Gray, Could Spell Trouble for Dalia Abdelhalim Kasseb in the Saturday, June 10, 2017 Runoff Election for Pearland City Council Position #7

REPORT by AUBREY R. TAYLOR

The commanding lead enjoyed by Dalia Kasseb back in the Saturday, May 6, 2017 General Election race for Pearland City Council At-Large Position #7 is no more – if you believe endorsements matter. Kasseb’s hopes of becoming the first Muslim elected official in the history of Brazoria County may have been dashed as Sherry Stockwell’s highly coveted endorsement was handed to Woody Owens – according to his website. If you remember, Sherry Stockwell was the third place finisher who gained 1,400 votes (or 19.28%) in the crowded field of candidates who were pretty much vying for the same vote – with the exception of Dalia Kasseb -- who was being pushed by several progressive and Democratic groups such as the Texas Coalition of Black Democrats and others in this non-partisan citywide election. UPDATE: Woody Owens has also gained the endorsements of G.C. Sonny Atkins and Terry Gray (two other candidates who were vying for the newly created Pearland City Council Position #7 seat) as well.

G.C. SONNY ATKINS ENDORSES WOODY OWENS OVER DALIA KASSEB

G.C. Sonny Atkinsthe fourth place finisher who gained 701 votes (or 9.65% of the vote) is endorsing Woody Owens in the Saturday, June 10, 2017 Runoff Election race for Pearland City Council Position #7.

TERRY GRAY ENDORSES WOODY OWENS OVER DALIA KASSEB

Terry Gray, the fifth place finisher who gained 498 votes (or 6.86% of the vote) is endorsing Woody Owens in the Saturday, June 10, 2017 Runoff Election race for Pearland City Council Position #7.

THE NUMBERS DON’T LIE

I wasn’t very good in mathematics in grade school or college. However, it doesn’t take a mathematician to figure out that the 1,400 votes from Sherry Stockwell, coupled with the 701 votes from G.C. Sonny Atkins, and the 498 votes being brought to the table by Terry Gray equals a net gain of 2,599 potential votes for Woody Owens – if he’s able to get those Pearlanders to return to the polls on Saturday, June 10, 2017. And we haven’t even added the 1,531 votes Woody Owens garnered for himself back on Saturday, May 6, 2017. When you add Woody Owens’ numbers to the pot his potential voter support balloons to: 4,130 – which would be more than enough for him to run away with the Saturday, June 10, 2017 Runoff Election for Pearland City Council Position #7. Especially if the turnout in Shadow Creek Ranch (where Dalia Kasseb lives) and other targeted demographics don't turnout in record numbers.

EVEN RECORD NUMBERS MAY NOT BE ENOUGH

In my opinion, for Dalia Kasseb to hold off the momentum gained by Woody Owens with his recent endorsements he received from Stockwell, Atkins and Gray she must double her turnout numbers from the Saturday, May 6, 2017 General Election. Is this possible -- YES! But is this likely to happen -- NO! But as we learned in the 2016 Presidential Election -- anything can happen in politics!

PEARLAND POLICE OFFICERS ASSOCIATION HAS ALSO ENDORSED WOODY OWENS IN THE SATURDAY, JUNE 10, 2017 RUNOFF ELECTION

MESSAGE FROM JAMES MCGUIRE, PRESIDENT PEARLAND POLICE OFFICERS ASSOCIATION PAC: “As we enter the runoff election for Pearland City Council Position 7, we must evaluate each of the candidates and ask ourselves who will lead Pearland into the future and bring about a positive change for all of Pearland’s residents. To do this, you need someone who is not only qualified for the position, but also has the knowledge and experience to do so. Only one candidate can meet these demands and that candidate is Woody Owens. Woody Owens is a longtime Pearland resident who has experience serving on city council and will be able to hit the ground running. Woody Owens has both the education and work experience to effectively represent the city as a councilman. Mr. Owens has, and currently does, sit on numerous boards and organizations that show his leadership capabilities. Based on these reasons, it is clear to us that Woody Owens is not only extremely qualified for Pearland City Council Position 7, but is also the clear choice to lead Pearland into the future. Therefore, the Pearland Police Officers Association P.A.C. would like to announce our endorsement of Woody Owens for Pearland City Council Position 7. We wish Mr. Owens luck and look forward to working with you soon. Respectfully, James McGuire President Pearland Police Officers Association P.A.C.”

THESE INDIVIDUALS BELIEVE WOODY OWENS IS THE MOST QUALIFIED CANDIDATE IN THIS RACE

Sherry Stockwell, Terry Gray, and G.C. Sonny Atkins

Beware of people who will try to paint these endorsements as anything other than quality decisions made by informed Pearlanders. My hope is for the Saturday, June 10, 2017 Runoff Race between Dalia Kasseb and Woody Owens to be a clean race run by both candidates -- based on issues and qualifications.

OTHER NEWS FOR PEARLAND

Dalia Abdelhalin Kasseb, Quentin Wiltz Alliance Yeilds Saturday, June 10, 2017 Runoff Election Berth for Both Candidates

REPORT by AUBREY R. TAYLOR

I can’t say whether Dalia Abdelhalin Kasseb the candidate poised to try to hold off Woody Owens in the Saturday, June 10, 2017 Runoff Election race for Pearland City Council Position #7 or Quentin Wiltz the candidate who forced a runoff with beloved Pearland Mayor Tom Reid will be successful. But no matter the outcome of the upcoming runoff elections they seem to have developed a bond that’s going to be a force to be reckoned with in Pearland, Texas.

In the case of Kasseb, she basically blew away her field of opponents. However, she did not meet the 50 percent threshold and must now face off against Woody Owens the second place finisher.

ON THE CAMPAIGN TRAIL: Dalia Kasseb standing in front of her campaign signs with Quentin Wiltz's campaign signs in the background as well.

In the race for Pearland City Council At-Large Position #7 Dalia Kasseb and Woody Owens are heading into a runoff to decide the winner of this race. Sherry Stockwell finished third to narrowly miss the Runoff Election -- and has endorsed Woody Owens. RACE RESULTS FROM THE GENERAL ELECTION: Dalia Kasseb 2,958 votes for (40.74%), Woody Owens 1,531 votes for (21.09%), Sherry Stockwell 1,400 votes for (19.28%), G.C. Sonny Atkins 701 votes for (9.65%), Terry Gray 498 votes for (6.86%), and Bud Tollefsen 173 votes for (2.38%). The number of ballots cast in this race was 7,261 according to the Brazoria County Clerk.  There were 399 under votes in the race for Pearland City Council At-Large Position #7. What are under votes? This simply means that 399 of the registered Pearland voters who participate in the election and were eligible to vote in this race chose not to cast a vote for either Dalia Kasseb or Woody Owens -- or they may have simply skipped over this particular race while casting their ballot.

In the case of Wiltz, he ran a very strong race by closing a lot of ground on Election Day to force his runoff showdown with Mayor Reid.

The unofficial turnout for this race was 7,589 according to the Brazoria County Clerk. There were 71 under votes in the race for Pearland City Council At-Large Position #7. What are under votes? MEET DALIA ABDELHALIM KASSEB

Dalia Kasseb is an established, millennial resident of the Shadow Creek Ranch community. She is ready to advocate for many of the new voices arriving to Pearland, TX, one of the fastest-growing cities in the United States.

Building on her passion for helping others, Dalia graduated with her Doctorate of Pharmacy from the University of Louisiana at Monroe in 2010. During her years at the College of Pharmacy, she received a grant from the American Pharmacists Association – Academy of Student Pharmacists Project CHANCE where she published research in the Journal of the American Pharmacists Association. Later, as the president of Louisiana Student Pharmacists Alliance, Dalia went on to earn certifications in Medication Therapy Management and Immunization Administration.

In early 2013, Dalia and her husband moved from Houston to join their extended family in Pearland. Upon completing her residency at CHI Baylor St. Luke's Medical Center, she began running the family pharmacy business. Dalia is grateful to perform the work of counseling and providing custom solutions to every patient, alongside the many Pearland residents who drive to Houston's Medical Center every day.

Dalia is passionate about providing equal opportunity for all. Aside from running her small businesses, she enjoys giving back with the Kaseb Foundation; a project that raises funds to provide education, water and homes to those in need in the US and Africa.

ISSUES IMPORTANT TO DALIA

- Re-evaluate transportation planning. A new city council needs to examine land use to ensure infrastructure matches current & future needs of residents and businesses. Our current city debt rate needs to be addressed to meet our most urgent obligations so we can meet these needs. Future models must include more public transportation options to address our city's long traffic times and road congestion.

- Advocate for local parks with a focus on healthier communities. We need more fitness options, hike/bike trails and green space in the City of Pearland. This planning will ensure Pearland remains an attractive community to invest in for years to come. Maintaining such spaces means striking a balance between residents' needs and long-term water management. A higher quality of life in Pearland means more green space with conservation in mind.

- Be a voice for all in City Hall. Pearland is a unique community and home to many different kinds of families. Our current city council doesn't include anyone from the incoming millennial generation, no representative of our thousands of healthcare professionals, or even one woman. As a pharmacist, business owner and home owner, I aim to bring all of this experience and diversity to Pos. 7. A more inclusive city hall will make for better input from and for all of our citizens.

- Make Pearland a Zero Waste City. My zero waste resolution will bring jobs to Pearland and help divert hundreds of tons of waste away from landfills in the long term. Building the programs and participation we need today requires council leadership who will champion the cause of conservation. Hundreds of other cities all over the nation and world are already reaping the environmental benefits and cost-savings from zero waste. It’s time for Pearland to join them.
