Carroll G. Robinson, Discusses His Thoughts on the 2013 City of Houston Mayoral Race involving Mayor Annise Parker, Ben Hall, Keryl Burgess Douglas, Victoria Lane, Micheal Fitzsimmons, Derek Jenkins, Charyl Drab and Eric Dick

Carroll G. Robinson is an Associate Professor at the Barbara Jordan-Mickey Leland School of Public Affairs at Texas Southern University (TSU) where he has served as Associate Dean of External Affairs and is Associate Director of the E-MPA program.

Who's Going To Win The 2013 Race for Mayor of the City of Houston?

Let me say right at the beginning, I don’t know who is going to be the next Mayor of our city. If I could predict the future, I would already have won the lottery several times over and would be living in Las Vegas. (Not really.)

The conventional wisdom is that there will be a run-off between Mayor Annise Parker and Ben Hall, the city attorney during the Bob Lanier administration.

The top dark horse candidates are probably Keryl Douglas, a former Executive Director of the NAACP Houston Branch who has recently been a candidate for Chair of the Harris County Democratic Party and Eric Dick who previously ran for City Council. Some people would also say that Don Cook, a Green Party candidate is also a leader among the so-called second tier candidates.

The most recent public polls show that none of the candidates for Mayor have much support from the public. Mayor Parker had less than 35% support and Ben Hall had less than 15% support. Eric Dick had 2% and no other candidate reached single digit support.

Part of the reason support for the candidates is so low is because this has not been a particularly inspiring or informative mayoral race.

Most of the candidates’ TV commercials so far have been negative and offer no real insight into where they want to lead our city.

Houston is the fourth largest city in America. It is the Energy Capital of the world, a globally recognized international city that represents the growing diversity of America. So far, this year’s mayor’s race has not reflected that status.

For the first time in a very long time, if ever, turnout in a city election year will be driven by the down ballot contested City Council races in Districts A, B, D, and I as well as the contested races for HISD and Houston Community College (HCC) Board of Trustees.

Houstonians want our city to be greater than it is now. We want city leaders committed to achieving progress for all Houstonians. We need leaders who will lead on reducing poverty, unemployment and crime in our city.

Most Houstonians want our city to have a better and more comprehensive public transit system with more light rail that connects our neighborhoods, airports, employment centers, healthcare facilities and supermarkets. Houstonians are willing to get out of their vehicles but they don’t trust the effectiveness and efficiency of the current public transportation system. Where are the candidates for Mayor on this issue?

Where are they on attracting life sciences and technology companies to Houston by cutting red tape and fees on small businesses?

Our neighborhoods need revitalization and the potholes in our streets need to be fixed. We need to be both tough and smart on fighting crime. How do the candidates plan to do these things? Go to their websites and see how they answer these questions.

Voters are waiting to hear from the candidates in their commercials and mail pieces about where they want to lead us, not just about what is wrong with their opponent. Houston needs leadership to properly grow and prosper.

It is my hope that the public will be the winner by getting the candidates to focus on debating solutions that will Make Houston Greater.

Sincerely,
Carroll G. Robinson

The Early voting period for the Tuesday, November 5, 2013 City of Houston Mayoral Election Begins on Monday, October 21, 2013 and ends on Friday, November 1, 2013

Mayor Annise Parker is currently serving her second term as the mayor of Houston. In the Tuesday, November 5, 2013 Mayoral Election Mayor Parker is facing off against Ben Hall, Don Cook, Keryl Burgess Douglas, Victoria Lane, Michael Fitzsimmons, Derek Jenkins, Charyl Drab, and Eric Dick.

However, based on the result of the only televised debate which took place on PBS on Tuesday, November 8, 2013; Mayor Parker, Ben Hall and Keryl Burgess Douglas are the candidates who really stood out in my opinion. Other candidates who took the stage along with the trio of Parker, Hall, and Douglas were: Michael Fitzsimmons and Eric Dick.

The debate was put on by Houston PBS and The League of Women Voters of Houston Education Fund.

Mayor Annise Parker Is Asking for Your Vote!

Mayor Annise D. Parker serves as the Executive Officer of the City. As the City's chief administrator and official representative, the Mayor is responsible for the general management of the City and for seeing that all laws and ordinances are enforced. Administrative duties include the appointments, with Council approval, of department heads and persons serving on advisory boards.

As Executive Officer, the Mayor administers oaths and signs all motions, resolutions and ordinances passed by City Council. The Mayor also serves a legislative function, presiding over City Council with voting privileges. The Mayor is responsible for advising Council of the City's financial condition and presents to Council an annual budget for approval.

Born into a family of meager financial means, Benjamin Hall, III has experienced firsthand the struggle that accompanies difficult economic times. Ben also encountered challenges in the academic world, where teachers doubted his ability to rise above his humble beginnings and achieve higher education. However, he knew he had the potential to succeed and refused to compromise his goals.

Here are a few of the videos released by the Annise Parker for Mayor of Houston Campaign during the 2013 Mayoral Election Cycle:

Ben Hall Is Asking for Your Vote!

In 1975, Ben enrolled at the University of South Carolina, where he received a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1977, with honors. His thirst for knowledge and desire to help others led him to continue his education at Duke University; obtaining a Master of Divinity degree in 1979 and a Ph.D. in 1985. Others might have stopped at that point, but Ben saw a real opportunity to help underrepresented communities as an attorney. In 1986, Ben earned a law degree from Harvard Law School and began working at the Vinson & Elkins law firm in Houston, Texas. He went on to serve as the City Attorney for the City of Houston in Mayor Bob Lanier’s administration.

Through his legal practice, Ben has applied the principles of courage, tenacity and justice that he learned as a young man; speaking out on behalf of those who need a strong voice to champion their causes. In 2000, Ben founded the nationally recognized Hall Law Firm. Ben is grateful for his professional successes, but also rough his numerous pro bono efforts on behalf of groups, corporations and individuals in need of representation.

Ben recognizes his personal blessings. He describes his family as his greatest treasure. Ben and Saundra, his wife of 31 years, have two sons. The entire Hall family remains committed to serving the Houston community.
