Lillie Schechter Was Elected as the New Harris County Democratic Party Chair on Sunday, March 5, 2017


Lillie Schechter was Elected as the New Harris County Democratic Party Chair on Sunday, March 5, 2017 at the IBEW Building, Union 716

The election to decide the best person to fill the chair position left vacant by Lane Lewis at the Harris County Democratic Party was held on Sunday, March 5, 2017 at the IBEW Building, Union 716 located at 1475 N Loop West 2nd Floor in Houston, TX 77008. "I would like to congratulate Lillie Schechter on win," says Aubrey R. Taylor, publisher of Houston Business Connections Magazine® 

Lillie Schechter is a local entrepreneur and the president of Bayou City Strategies, a firm that specializes in communications, fundraising, event planning and web site management. Lillie studied Public Leadership at LBJ School of Public Affairs, University of Texas at Austin. She also was employed as an account executive at Pierpont Communications from September 2005 to January 2008. Bayou City Strategies is a progressive, political consulting business focused on working with candidates and officeholders at the local and state level.

"I stand for #BlackLivesMatter, women's rights, LGBTQ+ rights, Immigrant rights, economic justice, & criminal justice reform for Harris Co!," Schechter boldly declared via her twitter accounty shortly after being elected to replace Lane Lewis.

Schechter finished with 190 votes. Her closest challenger was attorney, Eartha Jean Johnson, who finished with 118 votes. Keryl Douglas, Chris Spellman, Dominique Davis, and Johnathan F. Miller were also in the race.


MEET KERYL L. DOUGLAS


Keryl L. Douglas is a local entrepreneur and lead attorney at the Law office of Keryl L. Douglas. Her areas of legal specialization are: ADR, Business, Consumer, Creditor-Debtor, Criminal, Ethics-Legal Malpractice, Family, Government/Administrative, Intellectual Property, Labor-Employment, Litigation: Personal Injury, Wills-Trusts-Probate, Elder Law, Entertainment, Immigration, School Law, and Appellate: Civil. Keryl is a life-long advocate for the underserved. She graduated summa cum laude, with standing of #5 out of 202 students, from Thurgood Marshall School of Law in May 2008. She passed the Bar upon first attempt, qualifying to petition into the D.C. Bar without examination. She was admitted to the Texas Bar on November 7. 2008, and the Federal Bar in 2010. In December 2011, she became the 1st African American to run for Harris County Democratic Party Chair. She is the Founder of Optimum Solutions Consulting and “17 & Counting” young voter’s empowerment initiative. She has also served in capacities wherein she was responsible for implementing public affairs strategies, lobbying, and fund development. An accomplished mediator and Attorney, she’s also served as legal journalist and analyst, writing legal columns for local publications; and frequent legal/political analyst for a local radio program. Keryl is an appointed ad litem for local family and probate courts, as well as a frequent moderator and panelist/educator for diverse legal seminars. She heads legal education/advocacy for Friends of Emancipation Park Board of Directors. A prolific public speaker and speech writer, she has also served as a licensed insurance agent and structured settlement consultant. Her business acumen has also helped many other entrepreneurs achieve success and opportunity. Keryl served as the Executive Director of the NAACP Houston Branch from August 1990 to January 1999 (8 years 6 months). As the Director of the NAACP Houston Branch her duties included: Grant writing, programs development, community advocacy, hiring/supervision of staff and volunteers, radio program, media relations (writing press releases, spokesperson), fundraising and budget management.

MEET EARTHA JEAN JOHNSON


Eartha Jean Johnson is a local entrepreneur and licensed attorney. She was admitted to the Texas Bar on November 2, 1990. Eartha graduated from University of Nebraska - Doctor of Jurisprudence/Juris Doctor (J.D.) back in May of 1990 and from University of Houston with a Master of Laws degree back in May of 1996. Eartha is currently the CEO of Risk Mitigation Worldwide, an award-winning Corporate Liability Training and Professional Staffing Company that specializes in training corporate executives, managers and front-line employees on strategies to avoid lawsuits, regulatory compliance sanctions and negative press. She formed Risk Mitigation Worldwide in 1997 after practicing law for a Fortune 100 company, and working for the United States Department of Justice and an international law firm. Eartha has conducted numerous training courses; spearheaded governmental audits; designed compliance programs; and negotiated settlements with third parties and governmental regulators across the United States according to her website. In addition to her Juris Doctorate Degree, she holds a Masters Degree in Energy, Environmental and Natural Resource Law, a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration and an Associate Degree in Criminal Justice. Eartha is certified in Training and Development and is a Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR).

MEET DOMINIQUE DAVIS


Dominique Davis is the Chief of Staff/Director of Operations at Harris County Democratic Party. She has acted in this capacity since April 2016. According to Dominique, she’s a proven county-party builder. If elected, Dominique will bring more than 11 years of Precinct Chair training, event planning, and grassroots organizing experience to the chairmanship. She’s a Texas Democratic Party Campaign Academy alumna, and has provided cutting-edge leadership to county Parties, State House, and Congressional campaigns. She currently manages the day-to-day operations, special events, projects and personnel issues; and oversees volunteer recruitment and fundraising efforts. Dominique holds a Bachelor's degree in Political Science from the University of Oklahoma. She was the first in her family to graduate from college and participated in the TRIO Upward Bound program while in high school.

MEET CHRIS SPELLMON


Chris Spellmon is running for Harris County Democratic Party Chair on Sunday, March 5, 2017. However, we don’t know much about him at this time. His facebook page does not share any relevant information about his work or education experience. However, it does say that he studied at University of North Texas and Kashmere High School.

MEET JOHNATHAN F. MILLER


Johnathan F. Miller is currently a Manufacturing Engineer at Parker Hannifin. He also lists the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company and University of Cincinnati, Department of Learning Communities on his facebook page under his work and education experience. He also studied Chemical engineering at University of Cincinnati and attended Archbishop McNicholas High School, a Christ-centered, co-ed, Catholic high school located in Cincinnati, Ohio.
