The Democrats received 471,290 straight-ticket votes countywide, while the Republicans only received 401,255 straight-ticket votes countywide. In the end, the margin of victory for Herb Ritchie was 23,317 votes. 2016 ENDORSEMENT POWER RANKING
There were (67) sixty-seven races where a “select group” of Houston Business Connections Newspaper readers went head-to-head against the Houston Chronicle editorial board. Fifty-one (51) of the candidates endorsed by Houston Business Connections Newspaper (in the head-to-head contest) won their respective races on election night. Houston Business Connections Newspaper finished election night with (51 endorsement wins to 16 endorsement losses). On the other hand, only thirty-eight (38) of the candidates endorsed by the Houston Chronicle editorial board (in key races) won their respective races on election night. The Houston Chronicle editorial board finished election night with (38 endorsement wins to 29 endorsement losses).
DEMOCRATS WIN BIG IN HARRIS COUNTY
Democrats won the battle for Harris County on the back of straight-ticket voting. However, it’s fair to note that Democrats still lost the battle for the White House. “The battle for Harris County was doomed from the very beginning for Republican candidates up and down the ballot as election night returns began to pour in which showed that the Republican Party only mustered 45.29 percent or only 401,255 straight-ticket votes on Tuesday, November 8, 2016 in the General Election,” says Aubrey R. STRAIGHT TICKET VOTING WAS THE DIFFERENCE
The Democratic Party received a total of 471,290 straight-ticket votes, while the Republican Party received a total of 401,255 votes according to the “Unofficial Cumulative Report” published by the Harris County Clerk. This means that a down-ballot Republican was faced with having to overcome a 70,035 straight-ticket vote deficit to win their respective race according to the “Unofficial Cumulative Report” published by the Harris County Clerk.

Donald Trump did not perform well in Harris County. According to the “Unofficial Cumulative Report” published by the Harris County Clerk, the Hillary Clinton/Tim Kaine ticket earned 54.16 percent or 706,471 votes, while the Donald Trump/Mike Pence ticket only garnered 41.78 percent or 544,960 votes. The Hillary Clinton/Tim Kaine ticket beat the Donald Trump/Mike Pence ticket by 161,511 votes according to the “Unofficial Cumulative Report” published by the Harris County Clerk.

In the race for President of the United States the Houston Chronicle editorial board endorsed Hillary Clinton who won Harris County; but lost the race for President of the United States to Donald Trump. Houston Business Connections Newspaper did not make an endorsement in this race. In case you don’t know, the Donald J. Trump/Mike Pence ticket still beat the Hillary Clinton/Tim Kaine ticket statewide in Texas. According to the Texas Secretary of State “Election Night Returns” Donald Trump/Mike Pence won Texas with 52.46 percent or 4,671,001 votes. The Hillary Clinton/Tim Kaine ticket finished with 43.27 percent or 3,852,025 votes.
