The City of Pearland Will Hold a General Election for Mayor, At-Large Position 3 and 7 on Saturday, May 6, 2017


Mayor Tom Reid Will Highlight the Saturday, May 6, 2017 General Election Ballot in Pearland; At-Large Position 3 and 7; City Council Position 5 Will Also Be Contested

THE RACE FOR MAYOR OF PEARLAND

The candidates running for Mayor of Pearland on Saturday, May 6, 2017 are: Quentin Wiltz, Tom Reid and Jimi Amos. In case you don’t know, Mayor Tom Reid is the incumbent in this race. Quentin Wiltz has run for city council twice. Jimi Amos, the second challenger is an engineer by trade.

MEET MAYOR TOM REID

According to his website, Mayor Reid was born in Houston and acquired his conservative philosophy growing up in the farming and ranching country of Central Texas. He moved with his family to Pearland in 1965 and both his son and daughter graduated from Pearland schools. Mayor Reid became active in Pearland and served as Scout Troop Committee Chairman, City Planning Commissioner, City Councilman, Chairman of the Pearland Library Board, Chairman of Brazoria Drainage District #4, and as Mayor.

His professional career includes scientific writing, underwater defense research for the Navy Department, and as a Junior Design Engineer with WKM Valve Manufacturing Company. He was hired by Rockwell International and worked at Johnson Space Center from 1965 to 1997. He supervised and managed complex projects with sizeable staffs and tight budgets on Gemini, Apollo, Apollo-Soyuz, Skylab, and Space Shuttle Programs, and spent the last 10 years at JSC in the Space Shuttle Program Office.

Mayor Reid is highly visible in community activities. He is a Board Member of Pearland Arts League, PISD District Education Improvement Committee, and Adult Reading Center. He is a member of the Gideon Society, Chamber of Commerce, C. F. Spencer Lodge, and many other community organizations. He is an Eagle Scout, Ordained Elder in the First Presbyterian Church, and is a 32 Degree Mason and a Shriner.

He has a history of regional participation and currently represents Pearland as a Board Member and Past President of the Houston-Galveston Area Council and the Texas Association of Regional Councils, and is Secretary of the H-GAC Transportation Policy Council. He is on the Executive Board of Bay Area Transportation Partnership and is a Vice President of the Economic Alliance of the Houston Port Region. He is also Chairman of the Pearland Development Authority, and the Pearland Area Citizens Corps.

Mayor Reid believes that regional partnerships on transportation, surface water, and air quality are essential to economic growth and quality of life for both Pearland and the Houston Gulf Coast area. He is working with local, regional, and state organizations and officials to make Pearland a quality city that will make us all proud to say we live in Pearland.

MEET COUNCILMAN GARY MOORE

The candidates running for Pearland City Council At-Large Position #3 on Saturday, May 6, 2017 are: Darnell Jones and Gary Moore. In case you don’t know, Councilman Gary Moore is the incumbent in this race. Councilman Moore is being challenged by Darnell Jones, an attorney by trade.

According to his website, Gary Moore served 9.5 years in the Army as a Nuclear, Biological, and Chemical Non-Commissioned Officer. When he left the Army, he and his family moved to the DFW area where he started his environmental career as a Field Chemist and then was promoted to facility manager of a 10-day hazardous waste transfer facility. He moved to the Houston area along with his family for a promotion, when he became a Regional Logistics Manager for the largest hazardous waste disposal company in North America, where he furthered his knowledge on DOT regulations. He was then recruited by an environmental and engineering consulting company, where he enhanced his environmental resume to include air and water regulations. After working five years as an environmental consultant, he took an external promotion as Senior Environmental Technologist at Dow Chemical, where he currently manage air emissions compliance, waste management and compliance, and waste water compliance according to his website.

For the past decade, he and his family have lived in Pearland. He’s active in several volunteer organizations from the Lions Club to political organizations, and use to serve as a Pearland High School Cheerleader Booster Club Volunteer Dad.

PHOTO: Jude T.A. Smith promises to represent the diverse voices of Pearland if elected on Saturday, May 6, 2017. And he also promises to bring his legal background to the table when representing the citizens of Pearland as he works to make Pearland an even greater place to live and work.

FEATURED RACE FOR PEARLAND

The candidates running for Pearland City Council Position #5 in the “Special Election” to be held on Saturday, May 6, 2017 are: J. David Little and Jude T.A. Smith. This seat is being vacated by Councilman Greg Hill, who will remain in place until after his successor is elected. The winner of this race will serve out the remainder of Councilman Hill’s term set to expire in May 2019. Both of the candidates vying for this seat are licensed attorneys. J. David Little is in private practice, and Jude T.A. Smith is a Geico Insurance staff attorney at Levin & Clinebell located in the Galleria area of Houston, Texas.

FEATURED RACE FOR PEARLAND

The candidates running for Pearland City Council At-Large Position #7 on Saturday, May 6, 2017 are: Bud Tollefsen, Sherry Stockwell, Woody Owens, G.C. Sonny Atkins, Dalia Kasseb and Terry Gray. This is a newly created seat. Sherry Stockwell was the first candidate to sign up for this race according to published reports. Stockwell is a well-known entrepreneur with more than 30 years of experience in real estate and owns several businesses in the area. Houston Business Connections Magazine® is planning to publish more information about the Pearland City Council At-Large Position #7 race prior to the start of early voting.

ELECTION INFORMATION

The 2017 General Elections for Pearland, Texas will take place on Saturday, May 6, 2017. Early voting will take place from Monday, April 24, 2017 through Tuesday, May 2, 2017.
