Our January 20th meeting will feature two extraordinary Houstonians: Rev. William “Bill” Lawson, civil rights leader and founder of Wheeler Ave. Baptist Church, and State Sen. Rodney Ellis. The focus will be on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., his work and how we can continue it.

ABOUT REVEREND WILLIAM LAWSON

Rev. Lawson as a young minister became involved in the Houston civil rights movement, participating in sit ins. In 1962, he and others founded Wheeler Ave. Baptist Church. Dr. King and Lawson formed a friendship. Rev. Lawson was offered by Dr. King a chance to helm the Houston chapter of SCLC (Southern Christian Leadership Conference), which he gladly accepted.

In 1964, King came to Houston and addressed Lawson’s church. It was an act of courage on the part of both men as the FBI and the leadership of the National Baptist Convention told everyone in Houston to not permit King to speak. However, Lawson did so anyway. King risked his life to come.

Rev. Lawson led the effort to desegregate Houston. He has continued the fight for justice for Latinos, women, the poor and others.

In 1996, his 50th anniversary of being a minister, the Houston community honored him with the creation of a non-profit advocacy agency called WALIPP, the William A. Lawson Institute for Peace and Prosperity. That agency has gone before public officials and bodies on behalf of the underclass, and has established two single-gender charter schools for boys and girls. WALIPP has also constructed 50 units of apartments for seniors in Houston’s Third Ward.

Finally, the agency is pulling together community development groups, churches, civic clubs, and local governments to redevelop the Third Ward so that aggressive real estate development will not expel all who need affordable housing.

Rev. Lawson retired in 2004 as head of Wheeler Ave. Church.
