After all, he and his wife Jane, have made Missouri City home for more than 40 years. They both love the Show Me City, dearly. “I’ve dedicated my life as a committed husband, father, business leader/builder and civic volunteer to make Missouri City the best city imaginable,” says Mayor Allen Owen. There’s absolutely no way to sugarcoat what I’m about to say, “MAYOR ALLEN OWEN NEEDS YOUR VOTE TO KEEP MISSOURI CITY MOVING FORWARD!” It’s just that simple! Moving the Missouri City Mayoral Election to November, rather than continuing to have it take place in May election cycles has posted a "BIG PROBLEM" for Mayor Allen Owen. In case you don’t know, Mayor Allen Owen was challenged by not one, but two African Americans candidates back on Tuesday, November 6, 2018, in his bid for re-election. And at the end of election night, he found himself trailing in an election for the very first time – if my recollection is right. And in a year that has boded well for women, on the local and national stage, Council Member Yolanda Ford has emerged as the “PROJECTED FRONT-RUNNER” over your beloved Mayor Allen Owen in the upcoming Saturday, December 8, 2018 runoff election. The 8,600 votes for 35.68 percent of the vote Councilwoman Ford received places Mayor Allen Owen in a serious predicament. Especially since there was not one, but two African American candidates on the ballot. The third-place finisher, Fred G. Taylor garnered 7,075 votes for 29.35 percent of the vote – which was a very respectable showing for him. And your beloved Mayor Allen Owen finished second behind Councilwoman Ford with 8,428 votes for 34.97 percent of the vote!

Susan Soto is encouraging all registered Missouri City, Texas voters to vote for her during the early voting period which begins on Monday, November 26, 2018, and ends on Tuesday, December 4, 2018, in the runoff race for Missouri City Council At-Large Position #2.



Former NFL Football player Mike Holmes has endorsed Susan Soto in the Saturday, December 8, 2018, Runoff Election for the Missouri City Council At-Large Position #2 seat. Holmes is hoping that Missouri City voters will choose Susan Soto, who is a 17-year veteran of Texas public schools, and an award-winning teacher and principle. Holmes played most of his professional career with the San Francisco 49ers as a wide receiver. He was drafted in the first round of the 1973 NFL draft with the 18th pick. He also played for the Buffalo Bills and Miami Dolphins. Holmes is also a proud graduate of Texas Southern University and Galveston Ball High School.



Former Missouri City Council Member Eunice Reiter served the Missouri City community for more than two decades as the District A Councilwoman. And she’s been a Missouri City resident for more than four decades. In case you don’t know, Reiter is endorsing Susan Soto in the Saturday, December 8, 2018, Runoff Election for the At-Large Position #2 seat over current Council Member Chris Preston.

SUSAN SOTO FACES A TOUGH BATTLE

In case you don’t know, Susan Soto by most accounts is a serious underdog in the upcoming Saturday, December 8, 2018 runoff election between her, and Councilman Chris Preston who is the "PROHIBITIVE FAVORITE" coming off his stellar performance back on Tuesday, November 6, 2018, in the general election. Get this; Councilman Preston garnered 10,093 votes for 47.40 percent of the vote in the race for Missouri City Council At-Large Position #2. Susan Soto, the candidate who is asking for your vote on Saturday, December 8, 2018, finished second with 5,406 votes, for 25.39 percent of the vote. Angie Wierzbicki finished third with 3,221 votes for 15.13 percent of the vote. And H.R. “Buddy” Snyder finished fourth with 2,574 votes for 12.09 percent of the vote.

ALL ABOUT THE RUNOFF TURNOUT

While both, Mayor Allen Owen, and Susan Soto find themselves trailing their counterparts heading into the Saturday, December 8, 2018 runoffs; before you count them out, you must remember that runoffs are about which candidate or candidates can convince their supporters to return to the polls a second time to cast ballots. As for Mayor Owen, he is asking for the vote, prayers, and support of every single Missouri City voter in his bid for re-election -- and Susan Soto is doing the same. So, again, please don’t forget that early voting will begin on Monday, November 26, 2018, and end on Tuesday, December 4, 2018, for the runoffs.

The honorable Mayor Allen Owen is proud of his accomplishments. “I’m particularly proud of our continuing push by City Council to improve public safety. We recently have opened firehouses, and approved pay raises for Police and Fire Forces and all city workers. We’ve hired Missouri City Motorcycle Police Officers.” In spite of struggling economic conditions in other areas, “Missouri City home values have jumped many times and are one of the best buys in the area, because of our proximity to Houston, the Texas Medical Center, Energy Corridor and the Port of Houston.”

Owen serves on many boards, committees, and civic organizations throughout Missouri City. “Engagement is critical to me. I served the City as a Planning & Zoning Commissioner for five years, served on City Council for eight years, and have served as Mayor the past 24 years. We’re excited about HCC at Texas Parkway adjacent to City Hall with a $35 million investment to boost redevelopment there as a striking welcome to our City. Our library is growing, and we’re proud of our new civic center. Work continues for Metro getting commuter rail to our City along 90 and soon a bus network to move our citizens to and from work and school,” he said.

Allen and Jane are active at First United Methodist Church where they raised their children including a daughter who works as an FBISD teacher and are grateful Missouri City still is where their children and grandchildren visit. Owen earned degrees at Stephen F. Austin and SMU – Graduate School of Finance and Banking.

Your VOTE Is Your VOICE - Make Sure You Are Heard!

People complain over and over again about what’s wrong in our society and what politicians are doing and not doing to, or for, the community and their constituents. People complain about the injustices within the criminal justice system and schools that are graduating students who are under educated and therefore unemployable. From barbershops to beauty shops, from bridge clubs to social clubs, from fraternities to sororities, people grumble, mumble and complain over and over again about what’s wrong in our society. But what would happen if everyone who complained actually went out and voted? If only 20-30% of registered voters actually vote, do you think only 20-30% of registered voters actually complain? The sad truth is I believe there are more people who could vote and don’t than those who actually do vote, and if you can vote and don’t you shouldn’t complain. Bad officials and policies are allowed to remain in place when good citizens don’t vote.

In 1981 Pres. Ronald Reagan said, “For this nation to remain true to it’s principles, we cannot allow any American’s vote to be denied, diluted or defiled.” Perhaps the greatest tragedy in our society is the fact that too many people render their right to vote impotent by not exercising that right.

We turn out most to vote for a presidential election, but the results of our state, county and city elections, both primary and general, are more important to your day-to-day existence than any national election because our local public servants will directly impact you, your family and your friends. School board members can decide the quality of your child’s education or whether your neighborhood school remains open or closes. Local judges will rule on cases in your community. Community college board members will decide on many of the post-secondary educational opportunities for our young adults. Your Justice of the Peace will decide if local residents are evicted or will have another opportunity to stay in their homes. Local elections matter. Your vote matters.

From the lack of economic development and job creation to public safety, healthcare and public education, people want something better. You want something better, and the way to begin bringing about change is to get involved and vote.

In 1965 Pres. Lyndon B. Johnson said, “The vote is the most powerful instrument ever devised by man for breaking down injustice and destroying the terrible walls which imprison men because they are different from other men.”

Voting works. If voting didn’t work there would be no women’s rights, no public schools, no minimum rage, no Civil Rights Act, no Social Security, no Medicare, no Medicaid, no workers compensation, no environmental laws, and no health insurance. The fact is voting makes a difference. Your vote makes a difference, so get out and vote. As Mahatma Gandhi admonished, “Be the change that you wish to see in the world,” and the change you want to see should first be shown in how you vote. YOUR VOTE IS YOUR VOICE! Let your voice be heard by making sure you GO AND VOTE!

Voting Should Be a Family Affair

Over time, I’ve wondered who’s really to blame for the lack of true progress in our country. Is it our governing leadership – whom some have called out on numerous occasions to be incompetent, unconcerned, greedy slackers? Or is it us?

If this is truly a country that’s, "of the people, for the people, and by the people", then I have to go with "it’s us" and admit that lack of progress is a reflection of our own making. To admit this brings me pain and should you too; to the point of seeking undeniable resolve.

To understand that the image of our government, and the progressive production of our country is in our hands, and then for us to not strive corporately to implement that which can make it a beautiful successful item, is likened to parents starving the children they’ve been given and then expecting for those children to achieve excellence to the point of causing the household to rejoice.

It’s in our hands American citizens. We have the power to reform our country into an image we can all be proud to look at and say, yes now that’s me. America we can do this, so let’s stop bashing our governing authority and lets use that energy to focus on getting to the polls to elect those who represent the “true you” and erase what some are calling a false dead beat governing image that stands before us.

Grandparents and parents alike should take all those years of built up frustration and organize a family accountability plan for voting. This plan should be focused on getting our grandchildren and children to realize that they WILL vote, and it is not an option.

We thank God for those who have stepped outside of their call of duty to encourage our families; but enough is enough. Family leaders, we must begin to compel those we have influence over to exercise their right to make an informed voting decision.

Local Dems Need Decisive Action To Avoid GOP Thrashing in 2016 Presidential Election

Recent Primary voting results portend bleak general election outcomes for Democratic candidates in Harris County unless immediate, concerted, comprehensive, effective voter mobilization strategies are implemented. In the March 1st Primary, GOP out-voted Dems by more than 100,000; capturing 15.8% of Harris County’s 2,081,781 registered voters (329,014) compared to Democrat’s 10.9% (226,825), for a GOP voting margin advantage of 102,189.

If local Democratic candidates want to succeed in the Nov. 2016 General election, a serious fire of effective voter engagement and mobilization must be lit under the Harris County Democratic Party as well as all current elected leaders. President Obama’s historically impressive ground game in 2008 has not only proven it can be done, but already provided an easily duplicated blueprint for doing so.

Similarly, the historic national voter mobilization and turnout campaign that I had opportunity to help lead in 2000, resulting in historically high voter turnout across all states, show that voters definitely respond to concerted, effective engagement and mobilization. It’s not rocket science. There simply must be desire, determination, and diligence by Democratic Party, organizations, elected leaders, and/or advocates willing and able to do so. If this doesn’t happen, and soon, many impressive Democratic candidates will lose up and down the ballot simply because of ineffective, inadequate, and/or inexcusable lack of diligence by the Party and its elected leaders. Democracy demands that better effort is made, and Democratic candidates deserve and need better support from the Party in this regard.

President Obama’s campaign has repeatedly shown that with effective strategies, Harris County can indeed prove “Blue” to the benefit and election of Democratic candidates. In the 2008 Primary,  the Democratic Party more than doubled GOP’s voter turnout statewide (2,874,986 vs. 1,362,322). Obama garnered 50.4 percent of Harris County vote in 2008, and won reelection in 2012 by narrow margin of 971 votes over Mitt Romney. However, in the 2014 gubernatorial election, GOP bested the county’s Dems with 51% of the vote. Similarly, so far in 2016, GOP is doing much better job mobilizing their voters for advantageous turnout. Harris County Democratic Party and its leaders must spring into action to avoid a looming thrashing come November.

Both the Democratic and Republican Parties have much room for improvement! Voter turnout is inexcusably low compared to registered voters: 16% (2000), 12% (2004), 33% (2008), and 16% (2012). However, Dems are dismally trailing GOP, to the detriment of Democratic candidates, in this exceedingly important 2016 election season. Even some of our most lauded elected leaders have dismally low voter turnout in their respective districts: Carol Alvarado (13.35%); Garnet Coleman (18.10%); Harold Dutton (15.79%); Rodney Ellis (16.58%); Sylvia Garcia (12.84%); Al Green (14.76%); Gene Green (12.84%); Sheila Jackson Lee (15.29%); Borris Miles (17.03%); Senfronia Thompson (13.76%). This can and MUST be easily increased and improved to assure election of Democratic candidates up and down the ballot in November.

An ideal start to ‘right this ship and win the race’ could be for each current elected leader to take responsibility for raising the funds to employ people across their own constituencies to immediately launch and wage an aggressive, strategic voter registration, engagement, and mobilization campaign; with the aim of inspiring and achieving 80 to 100% voter turnout in their respective districts. This will not only improve election outcomes, but also economic and empowerment outcomes across Democratic communities. We Can. We Must. We Will!
