In case you don’t know, Judge-Elect DaSean Jones, he’s a decorated U.S. Army combat veteran, who wants to institute alternative sentencing initiatives that are not solely punitive, but rehabilitative in nature. And by unseating Judge Catherine Evans in the race for District Judge, 180th Judicial District Court back on Tuesday, November 6, 2018, he will more than likely earn the opportunity to do just that. Although he’s a quiet and reserved professional, Judge-Elect Jones has an incredibly interesting set of life experiences that’s shaped his unique perspective. According to him, he believes that the people who make the life decisions for so many of Harris County's citizens have either lacked relevant life experience, or don’t share in the same, or similar life experiences as the men and women who they’ve been punishing. While straight-ticket voting was indeed a contributing factor in his victory over Judge Evans, he and other African American men running for county-wide offices in Harris County may find themselves facing an uphill battle in future elections. Why? Judge-Elect Jones may not have won his race without the 104,698 straight-ticket voting cushion he received from Democratic voters in Harris County, Texas back on Tuesday, November 6, 2018, in the midterm election. Here’s why: DaSean Jones received 636,029 overall votes. When you subtract the 514,758 straight-ticket votes, you come up with 121,271 votes. Comparatively speaking, if you subtract the 410,060 straight-ticket votes, Judge Catherine Evans received from her overall vote total of 545,889 you come up with 135,829 votes. Now, please keep in mind that this analysis is not meant to take away from, or diminish the victory achieved by Judge-Elect DaSean Jones, but rather to illustrate how straight-ticket voting will impact local races in upcoming elections in the 2020 Presidential Election Cycle and beyond. How can I say this, well, we stripped away the straight-ticket votes garnered by both candidates in this race, the bottom-line numbers reveal that Judge Catherine Evans would have perhaps defeated Judge-Elect DaSean Jones by an approximate margin of 14,558 votes – hypothetically speaking. Again, this formula is not an exact science, but rather a formula that can be used to measure the strength of candidacies going forward. And more directly, it shows that African American males may need a little assistance if they are to remain relevant in future Harris County, Texas elections when straight-ticket voting becomes a thing of the past.

Make no mistake about it, DaSean Jones, a 2018 Democratic candidate running for District Judge, 180th Judicial District Court in Harris County, Texas and his beautiful wife Audia Jones, an Assistant Harris County District Attorney are both on the rise. Especially, since Audia Jones burst on the scene at a recent “CANDIDATE’S FORUM” a few weeks ago. Nope, this ain’t no run-of-the-mill couple. This pair has the “IT-FACTOR” if you ask me! They possess the entire package, faith, intelligence, good looks, and the tenacity of pit bulls. Yes, I said pit bulls. So, don’t let the good looks fool you – THE JONES’ AIN’T TO BE PLAYED WITH!!!

KEEPING UP WITH THE JONES’

I’ve been keeping a watchful eye on DaSean Jones for several months now, as he’s preparing to face off against Judge Catherine Evans in a Tuesday, November 6, 2018 showdown for the 180th Judicial District Court bench in Harris County, Texas. As it stands right now, he and other 2018 Democratic hopefuls are expecting a “BLUE-WAVE” to roll through Harris County, Texas. And if their prayers are answered, nearly every judicial bench in Harris County that matters will be held by a Liberal. But how are things looking for DaSean Jones in his quest to become a judge? Well, I would stop short of calling him the overwhelming favorite in his quest to unseat Judge Catherine Evans. Partly because the “MIDTERM ELECTION CYCLE” has more often than not been won by Harris County Republican Party candidates for many, many cycles. But could this year be different? Well, Democrats sure think so. And it’s hard to argue against them, especially after witnessing the historic showing they gave us back on Tuesday, March 6, 2018, in the Harris County Democratic Party Primary.

A QUICK COMPARISON

Back in the Tuesday, March 6, 2018, Harris County Democratic Party Primary, DaSean Jones received 19,054 “ABSENTEE VOTES”. Judge Catherine Evans edged DeSean Jones out in this category by receiving 19,270 “ABSENTEE VOTES”. However, DaSean Jones had 56,243 Democrats to cast their ballot for him during the “EARLY VOTING” period. Comparatively speaking, only 45,813 Republicans cast their ballot for Judge Catherine Evans during the “EARLY VOTING” period. And “ELECTION DAY” voting was pretty much the same as 59,031 Democrats cast their ballot for DaSean Jones, and 51,287 Republicans cast their ballot for Judge Catherine Evans. So, who will win on Tuesday, November 6, 2018, between DaSean Jones and Judge Catherine Evans in the race for District Judge, 180th Judicial District Court? Well, nobody knows for certain at this time. However, what I can assure you of, is that the 134,328 overall votes DaSean Jones received back in the Tuesday, March 6, 2018, Harris County Democratic Party Primary won’t be enough to carry the day on Tuesday, November 6, 2018. He's going to at the very least need double (or perhaps triple) that number to unseat Judge Catherine Evans in my opinion. However, with that said, both DaSean Jones and Judge Catherine Evans, who only received 116,370 overall votes back in the Harris County Republican Party Primary have a lot of work to do between now and Election Day.

MEET AUDIA JONES

Audia Jones was born to her loving parents, who are now retired. Her dad is a decorated Vietnam Veteran, who served as a paratrooper and member of the Long-Range Reconnaissance Patrol (LRRP), followed by a career as an aviation engineer. Her mom was a lifelong educator who taught special needs children for more than thirty (30) years.

Education. Jones received a full four-year NCAA College Basketball Scholarship to the University of Rhode Island (URI) where she graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration. After leaving URI, Jones attended Texas Southern University, Thurgood Marshall School of Law where she earned an academic scholarship and graduated magna cum laude. After law school, she demonstrated herself to be a devoted civil servant, clerking at several highly-esteemed governmental agencies including the United States House of Representatives and the Federal District Court for the District of Columbia.

Justice of the Peace Court Experience. Jones has practiced before all sixteen (16) Justice of the Peace Courts (JP) in Harris County. She knows first-hand the impact that JP Court Judges have in the lives of citizens and their communities. After her undergraduate studies, prior to becoming an attorney, Jones worked as an intern for a JP Court. During that experience, Jones witnessed how compassion and understanding while upholding the law ensured decisions served the best interests of the community. As an Assistant District Attorney, Jones completed a JP Court rotation where the balance of her time was served in Precinct 7, Place 1. There, she handled multiple cases, including traffic violations, assaults, theft by check, truancy, and evictions.

United States House of Representatives. Upon completing law school, driven by her love for her Houston community, Jones served as the Counsel Fellow for Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee. As a Counsel Fellow, she quickly advanced from the duties of a Graduate Fellow to a Congressional Staffer managing the Judiciary Committee Portfolio for the Congresswoman. In approximately 50 hearings, Jones successfully prepared a detailed analysis of key legislation affecting the 18th Congressional District of Harris County while effectively communicating the pros and cons of each legislative item to the Congresswoman.

Skilled, Practicing Attorney. Following her experiences at the U.S. House of Representatives, Jones joined the Harris County District Attorney’s Office as an Assistant District Attorney where she has handled non-violent and violent misdemeanor and felony offenses. As a Prosecutor, Jones has served as a Chief in a county court. She has also been assigned to the Family Criminal Law Division (FCLD) where she was the Chief Prosecutor of the Misdemeanor Division prosecuting felony domestic violence cases. Currently, Jones works as a senior felony prosecutor in the Financial Crimes Division. She focuses on the prosecution of public assistance fraud committed against various governmental agencies. The office recovers stolen State and Federal funding that should be allocated to Houstonians in need of flooding, housing, medical, unemployment, welfare, and other life support assistance.

Personal Life. Audia Jones is married and has two children, a seventeen (17) month old son, and ten (10) year old niece. They reside in Precinct 7. She is a member of the Harris County Democratic Party, Texas Democratic Women, Houston Black American Democrats, Houston Association of Women Attorneys, Junior League of Houston and the Wheeler Avenue Christian Academy Parent Teacher Committee.

MEET DASEAN JONES

DaSean Jones is running for judge in order to set the conditions for Harris County to lead the nation in a more progressive direction with respect to Criminal Justice.

DaSean Jones wants to institute alternative sentencing initiatives that are not solely punitive, but rehabilitative. Although a quiet and reserved professional, DaSean has been afforded an incredibly interesting life experience he uses to shape his perspective. DaSean believes that the people who make the life decisions for so many of Harris County's citizens either lack life experience or do not share in the same or similar experiences of the men and women who are punished on a daily basis.

As a decorated U.S. Army combat veteran, DaSean has been faced with experiences and challenges that have broadened his mind. After living and working throughout the world as a military brat and then as an Army Officer, DaSean was lucky to share and learn about many different cultures and ideologies. In executing his duties as a combat arms officer, it was always paramount that he leads his soldiers in a fair and balanced manner. Thus, he believes that the Judicial System should be fair and balanced.

DaSean decided to run for Judge after witnessing first-hand how some judges do not disperse justice fairly across the board and seem close-minded and prejudiced towards some defendants and attorneys. Ready to tarnish their records or reputation. Yet, these same judges afford those who they are familiar with or more in line with financially better treatment and basic courtesies even moments after giving someone else "the benefit of the doubt."

Financial status, connections, race, clothing, and other variables should not come into play in regards to the administration of justice. This is not fair and needs to be stopped. DaSean does not believe that such conduct marches in step with the appropriate character of a judge in Harris County, Texas, or anywhere else in the United States. As a result, it is his opinion that the criminal justice system, which is very necessary and fundamental to law and order, is off track and that those who benefit from it generally turn a blind eye to its folly.

DaSean was raised by his dad, a retired U.S. Army Staff Sergeant, and his mother, who passed away on Valentine's Day a few weeks after his return from his second tour in Iraq. DaSean has three siblings. Two of which are disabled veterans who served overseas. While in elementary school, DaSean visited Auschwitz, Anne Frank's house, and other key historical examples of social injustice and abuse of power. These experiences have helped mold him into the person he is today.

After graduating from Tuskegee University, DaSean commissioned as an Army Field Artillery Officer, where he led soldiers from all walks of life and held the highest standards as an officer and a gentleman.

After his mother's death on February 14, 2008, DaSean decided to pursue his lifelong dream of becoming a lawyer. As a senior Army Captain, he left a promising career, sold his house and the balance of his belongings in order to pursue his calling. He attended law school while working in the Army Reserves. Upon completing his degree, he started his own law practice. DaSean, his wife, and two children now call Houston home.

Our primaries in Texas (in general) and Harris County (in particular) will for the most part be about two people – Governor Greg Abbott, and whomever the Texas Democratic Party can convince to challenge him. However, after the beating Gov. Abbott put on his last Democratic rival, former state senator Wendy R. Davis back in 2014, no big names have officially stepped up to the plate to challenge him as of yet. Oh, I forgot, the Democrats do have Jeffrey Payne, the owner of a gay bar in Dallas, Texas. Payne has publicly stated that he plans to challenge Gov. Abbott in 2018. And according to published reports, he plans to loan his campaign at least $2 million dollars to help his cause. But he’ll need a lot more than that to win in Texas. Anyways, in case you’ve forgotten, Gov. Greg Abbott received 2,796,547 votes for 59.27% of the vote back on Tuesday, November 4, 2014 statewide in Texas. The Democratic nominee, Wendy R. Davis received 1,835,596 votes for 38.90% of the statewide vote. To round out the 2014 MIDTERM ELECTION field of gubernatorial candidates Kathie Glass (Libertarian) received 66,543 for 1.41%; Brandon Parmer a member of the Green Party received 18,520 for 0.39%; and Sarah M. Pavitt a write-in candidate received 1,062 for 0.02% of the statewide vote in Texas.
