In case you haven’t heard, the 2015 City of Houston Mayoral Race is shaping up to be one of the most expensive races Houstonians have seen in quite some time.

A few of the announced candidates running for mayor of Houston in 2015 are: Chris Bell, Bill King, Adrian Garcia, Christopher Legier, Nguyen Thai Hoc, Sylvester Turner, Demetria Smith, Ben Hall, Victoria Lane, Marty McVey, and Steve Costello. “All combined, the candidates running for Mayor of Houston in 2015 have raised well over $7 million dollars. Adrian Garcia (former Harris County Sheriff) has raised more than $1,506,774; Steve Costello (an at-large City Council Member who’s running for mayor) has raised more than $1,476,757; Sylvester Turner (a former State Representative) has raised around $763,092; Bill King (a former Mayor of Kemah) has raised around $755,293; Chris Bell (a former Congressman and Houston City Councilman) has raised about $381,668; Ben Hall (a former City Attorney and owner of KCOH Radio) has raised $94,605; and Marty McVey (a local businessman) has raised somewhere in the neighborhood of $60,197,” says Aubrey R. Taylor, publisher of Houston Business Connections Newspaper. “These preliminary dollar figures are definitely going to bode well for local television and radio outlets,” says Taylor. “But my question is how much of this money is going to trickle back down to minority-owned and operated media outlets.”

OTHER 2015 CITY OF HOUSTON MAYORAL CANDIDATES: At the time this article was published we were not able to locate the campaign finance reports for: Demetria Smith, Khistina “Khis” Dehean Caldwell, Christopher Legier, or Victoria Lane.

A LOOK AT BEN HALL

As it stands right now, KCOH Radio, a popular radio station (targeted to reach African Americans) recently purchased by Ben Hall (a 2015 candidate for Mayor of Houston) is getting its share of campaign dollars directly from The Ben Hall for Mayor of Houston Campaign. According to campaign finance reports: back on Saturday, November 1, 2014 The Ben Hall for Mayor of Houston Campaign purchased an ad buy on Beyond Broadcasting (KCOH) totaling: $29,000.00 dollars. On the same day (Saturday, November 1, 2014) The Ben Hall for Mayor of Houston Campaign purchased another ad buy on Beyond Broadcasting (KCOH) totaling: $24,300.00 dollars. Earlier this year (back on Monday, February 2, 2015) The Ben Hall for Mayor of Houston Campaign purchased another ad buy on KCOH Radio totaling $63,000.00 dollars. Wow! That’s a lot of loot being spent with KCOH. What does this mean? Well, from Saturday, November 1, 2014 to Tuesday, February 2, 2015, (a (4)four-month period) The Ben Hall for Mayor of Houston Campaign spent more than $116,300.00 dollars with the radio station that’s owned by Hall himself – according to his campaign finance reports.

ADRIAN AND SYLVESTER

As it relates to Adrian Garcia, the bulk of his campaign money being spent (to this point) is going to his consultants and strategists from what we can see. The same holds true for Sylvester Turner. At this time it looks like Turner and Garcia are both spending a considerable amount of their campaign donations on putting their team in place – from what we can tell.

BILL AND STEVE

As for Bill King and Steve Costello, well, next to the $116,300.00 The Ben Hall for Mayor of Houston Campaign spent with KCOH; King and Costello are the other two big spenders in the race for mayor. “According to published reports, Bill King allocated more than $191,000 dollars to advertising. I’ve seen a few of his advertisements on television. I’ve also heard a few of his radio spots on conservative radio. However, I haven’t seen much in terms of minority outreach to this point,” says Taylor. “Oh, and I’ve also seen a lot of Bill King banners in social media,” Taylor explains. “The same is so as it relates to Steve Costello. According to published reports he’s incurred somewhere in the neighborhood of $66,000.00 dollars or so in advertising related campaign expenditures; but it doesn’t appear that much of that spending has been geared toward minority voters – to this point.”

COMING IN AUGUST

In the August 2015 printed/e-editions of Houston Business Connections Newspaper we will publish a breakdown of the most recently released campaign finance reports…SO STAY TUNED!
