The Houston City Council At-Large Position 5 seat is currently being held by Council Member Jack Christie. In case you don't know, Council Member Jack Christie is "TERM-LIMITED" and cannot run for re-election on Tuesday, November 5, 2019, in the upcoming City of Houston General Election.

Buzbee, King, Baker, and Smith are All Expected to Challenge Mayor Sylvester Turner in the Race for Mayor of Houston Scheduled to Take Place on Tuesday, November 5, 2019

The field of candidates expected to run for mayor of Houston in 2019 is beginning to take shape. As it stands right now, attorney Tony Buzbee, attorney Bill King, Dr. Kendall L. Baker, and businesswoman Demetria Smith are expected to challenge Mayor Sylvester Turner on Tuesday, November 5, 2019, in the race to become Houston's next mayor. Hall of Fame Wrestler "Booker T" who was the first candidate to announce his bid to challenge Mayor Turner way back in 2016 is not expected to be in the field of 2019 mayoral contenders. CLICK HERE to learn more about why "Booker T" isn't going to be able to run for mayor on Tuesday, November 5, 2019, after all.

THINKING ABOUT RUNNING?

According to the folks at the Houston City Secretary’s Office candidates looking to run for office on Tuesday, November 5, 2019, can pay a filing fee, or they can collect signatures to have their name placed on the ballot. So, if you are a candidate wanting to run for MAYOR OF HOUSTON you can pay a 1,250.00 dollar filing fee or collect signatures to have your name placed on the ballot. If you are a candidate who would like to run for THE CITY OF HOUSTON CONTROLLER position you can pay a 750.00 dollar filing fee or collect signatures to have your name placed on the ballot. And if you are a candidate looking to run for one of the HOUSTON CITY COUNCIL positions you can pay a 500.00 dollar filing fee or collect signatures to have your name placed on the ballot. However, if you plan on going the route of collecting signatures to have your name placed on the ballot, the exact number of signatures needed won’t be determined until sometime in July of this year from what I understand. But, to be sure, all candidates interested in running for office on Tuesday, November 5, 2019, in the City of Houston General Election can call (832)393-1100 to speak directly with someone in the City Secretary’s Office. However, if you have any problem whatsoever in getting your questions answered, you can call me directly at (281)788-3033, and I will try to do what I can to help. And just in case you don’t already know, the City Secretary’s Office can be located at 900 Bagby St, Houston, TX 77002 on the first floor.

Donna Edmundson announced as new Houston city attorney

Today, Council Member Dwight Boykins joined Mayor Annise Parker to announce that former assistant City Attorney Donna Edmundson was selected to be the new city attorney beginning January 16, 2015, upon confirmation by City Council.

Edmundson will become the first woman to hold the prestigious position and has nearly 30 years of experience with the City of Houston Legal Department. Since 2008, she has worked as Chief of the department's Neighborhood Services Section and under her leadership she has taken legal action against the owners of dangerous buildings and worked closely with The Houston Police Department on gang, drug and vice related matters.

"A city attorney is one of the most important decisions a city council can make and I am standing in support of Donna Edmundson because of her wealth of knowledge and expertise," said Council Member Dwight Boykins. "Donna Edmundson has a proven record of success in her current position and has worked on many key issues and programs that have benefitted not only The City of Houston, but also the District D community."

Donna Edmundson received her Bachelor of Arts from Sam Houston State University and her law degree from South Texas College of Law, a school which holds special significance to Council Member Boykins, as his wife, Genora Boykins, graduated from there as well.

Council Member Dwight Boykins and his city council colleagues will consider Edmundson's confirmation in two weeks.

About Carroll G. Robinson

Carroll G. Robinson is an Associate Professor and a former Associate Dean of External Affairs at the Barbara Jordan-Mickey Leland School of Public Affairs at Texas Southern University (TSU) in Houston, Texas. Professor Robinson is currently a member of the Board of Trustees of the Houston Community College System (HCC) and a Citizen Member of the Board of Trustees of the Houston Firefighters’ Relief and Retirement Fund. He is a former member of the Board of Directors and Board of Advisors of K9s4COPs. He is also a past chairman of the Houston Citizens Chamber of Commerce.

Professor Robinson is a former At-Large (elected citywide) member of the Houston (Texas) City Council. As a member of the City Council, Professor Robinson chaired the city’s Transportation, Technology and Infrastructure Committee. 

Professor Robinson represented the City of Houston on the Board of Directors of the Houston-Galveston Area Council, the local council of regional governments. He served as a member of the Board’s Budget Committee and was a Vice Chair of the Transportation Policy Council. He also represented the City of Houston on the Board of Directors of the Alliance for I-69 Texas and TEX-21, a statewide transportation coalition of elected officials, business leaders and transportation and infrastructure professionals.

Professor Robinson is a former member of the Board of Directors of the National League of Cities where he served as a member of the Board’s Finance Committee and was a member of the Energy, Environment, and Natural Resources Steering Committee. He is a former member of the Texas Municipal League’s Utilities and Environment Committee, and Transportation Task Force; Advisory Board of the Texas Environmental Defense Fund; a past President of the Texas Association of Black City Council Members where he was also a member of the Housing Committee; a former member of the National Black Caucus of Local Elected Officials (NBC-LEO); a former member of the Texas Attorney General’s Municipal Advisory Committee (1998); Founding Chairman of the Democratic Leadership Council’s Local Elected Officials Network; a former Chairman of the National League of Cities Democratic Municipal Officials; a former member of the Democratic National Committee (DNC); and a former General Counsel of the Texas Democratic Party. 

Prior to his election to the Houston City Council, Professor Robinson was an Associate Professor at the Thurgood Marshall School of Law at Texas Southern University. He has also worked as an adjunct Professor at South Texas College of Law. 

Professor Robinson has worked in the Texas Legislature as Chief of Staff and General Counsel to Texas State Senator Rodney Ellis. He received his Bachelor of Arts (with Honors) in Political Science from Richard Stockton State College in Pomona, New Jersey (where he received a Certificate of Academic Accomplishment in African-American Studies) and his Juris Doctorate from the National Law Center at George Washington University in Washington, D.C. 

Professor Robinson is a Life Member of the NAACP and Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. He is the author or co-author of numerous legal and public policy articles and commentaries. Robinson plans to put his vast experience and know-how to work for the people of Houston should voters choose him as the best candidate in the race for City of Houston Controller on the Tuesday, November 3, 2015 City of Houston Mayoral Election ballot.
