Former State Rep. Al Edwards sponsored House Bill 1016 that made Juneteenth an official holiday in the state of Texas back in 1979.

WHAT IS JUNETEENTH?

In case you aren't familiar with Juneteenth, its a holiday that pays tribute to the announcement of the abolition of slavery in Texas by Union General Gordon Granger (and 2,000 federal troops) in Galveston, Texas in June of 1865--nearly 3 years after Abraham Lincoln had declared all slaves be freed.
