Gilbert Garcia Has What it Takes to Make History; State Sen. John Whitmire, Hollins, Edwards, and Kaplan Should be Concerned

Businessman Gilbert Garcia (right), could give state Senator John Whitmire a run for his money if he stops playing around and enters the race to become the next mayor of the city of Houston. Gilbert Garcia, who served as the chairman of (METRO), The Metropolitan Transit Authority, has the pedigree, knowledge, connections, intestinal fortitude, and a keen understanding of finances that's desperately needed to get city government in Houston, Texas back on the right track. Not to mention, the fact that Garcia could possess the wisdom that's needed to guide Houston around the pending fiscal cliff, former Mayor Annise Parker warned the general public about several weeks ago. But will he run for mayor or not?

Congresswoman Sylvia Garcia has already endorsed state Senator John Whitmire in the race for Mayor of Houston that's scheduled to take place on Tuesday, November 7, 2023. However, please be reminded that the "OFFICIAL FILING PERIOD" to run for City of Houston Mayor, City of Houston Controller, and Houston City Council doesn't even open up until Saturday, July 22, 2023, and will remain open until 5:00 p.m. on Monday, August 21, 2023. You can "CLICK HERE" for more information.

State Senator Carol Alvarado has endorsed state Senator John Whitmire in the upcoming race for Mayor of Houston that's taking place on Tuesday, November 7, 2023. However, these endorsements could be premature. Why? Well, the "OFFICIAL FILING PERIOD" to run for the City of Houston Mayor, City won't open until Saturday, July 22, 2023. And making an early endorsement before even knowing who the candidates are going to be isn't a very smart political move. You can "CLICK HERE" for more information.

State Senator John Whitmire is expected to have a lot of support from the African American Community. However, what a lot of folks don't understand about Black voters, is that not all Blacks play the game of following the so-called leader. That being said, 2023 mayoral candidates like state Senator John Whitmire shouldn't be allowed to sell the African American Community pie in the sky on Tuesday, November 7, 2023. State Senator Whitmire must be compelled to stand on his 50-year track record, and what he has done (or failed to do) since he served as a state Representative from 1973-1982, specifically for African Americans. And he should also be required to show how he's made a difference in the Black community as a state Senator since first being elected back in 1983, to the Texas Senate, in Austin, Texas.

Gilbert Garcia and his wife Dee Dee, have an unquestioned track record of giving back. Gilbert Garica is a "GAME CHANGER" all Houstonians could be proud to call their mayor if he runs and wins. And a lack of Hispanic representation in leadership roles at Houston City Hall could signal that the time to elect Houston's first Latino mayor has arrived.

Gilbert Garcia (second from left), is a wealthy businessman, who joined Garcia Hamilton & Associates back in 2002. And according to their website, Gilbert Garcia, the firm’s Managing Partner, has been well worth his weight in gold, since taking over the managing duties. "Under his leadership, the Firm has grown from $200 million in fixed-income assets under management to over $16.8 billion (as of September 30, 2022)," his website claims. And with the city of Houston heading toward a fiscal cliff, electing a CEO like Gilbert Garcia could be the perfect move needed to get the fourth most populous city in America, heading in the right direction.

AUBREY R. TAYLOR: "I need my loyal readers, along with about 50,000 other Houstonians to join me in "PUTTING PEOPLE OVER POLITICS" on Tuesday, November 7, 2023, in Houston, Texas. Going forward we must mobilize ourselves and take matters into our own hands by making it our business to only lend our support to duly-qualified people who value the support of all of God's children, no matter what ethnic group they were born into. We also need people who possess character, substance, and the intestinal fortitude needed to stand up to local political party bosses, and their cronies."

Gilbert Garcia Has What it Takes to Make History; State Sen. John Whitmire, Hollins, Edwards, and Kaplan Should be Concerned

AUBREY R. TAYLOR REPORTS©

I'm overjoyed to inform you that we currently have more Hispanics running for public office in the upcoming city of Houston General Election than we've ever had before.

A few of the Latino candidates already signed up are as follows: Patricia Olivares, Robert Gallegos, Conchita Shelly Reyes, Julian Ramirez, Richard Cantu, Sonia Rivera, Joaquin Martinez, Cynthia Reyes-Revilla, Roy Morales, Mario Castillo, Ivan Sanchez, Ralph "Rafa" Garcia.

The nonpartisan local May 6, 2023, General Elections are beginning to heat up, in the Houston area. And in case you don’t know, on November 7, 2023, the City of Houston Mayoral Election is also kicking into high gear as the election bid being waged by state Senator John Whitmire, is starting to pick up steam.

Just last week state Sen. John Whitmire picked up the coveted endorsement of the Houston Police Officer’s Union. “I will be tough but smart on crime, keep our economy growing and ensure city services are working for all Houstonians,” says Sen. Whitmire. “I love Houston, as so many of your do. Together we can make it better,” his website says.

With no bonified Latino with a big name like former METRO Board Chairman Gilbert Garcia, in the race yet, the hopes of Hispanics making history by electing a Latino mayor in the bayou city on November 7, 2023, could be slipping away. Just the mere fact that Congresswoman Sylvia Garcia and state Senator Carol Alvarado have both already openly endorsed state Sen. John Whitmire should tell you everything you need to know as it relates to Councilman Robert Gallegos's chances.

“ROBERT GALLEGOS.”

What you have to remember is that Robert Gallegos only received 7,246 votes, over Richard “Rick” Gonzales, who received 3,547 votes when he was challenged by Gonzales back on Tuesday, November 5, 2019, for his Houston City Council District I seat. And even more importantly, there were more than 73,590 registered voters in District I, but only 7,246 voters turned out for Councilman Gallegos’s reelection bid back then.

While I admire Gallegos for throwing his hat in the ring, he may not have what it takes in terms of resources, or the name identification needed to mix it up with “TOP TIER MAYORAL CONTENDERS” like state Sen. John Whitmire, former At-Large Councilwoman Amanda Edwards, former Harris County Clerk Chris Hollins, or Attorney Lee Kaplan, on November 7, 2023, in the bayou city.

For those of you who don’t know, Councilman Robert Gallegos has been the only LGBTQ member serving on Houston City Council for some time now, but he’s term-limited and can’t run for reelection as the District I councilman. That being said, he appears to be hoping to “hit pay dirt” as the lone Hispanic who has entered the race to become CEO of the City of Houston and succeed Mayor Sylvester Turner.

“ANNISE PARKER.”

While former Houston Mayor Annise Parker, would like to see Houstonians elect a mayor who is committed to reintroducing the Houston Equal Rights Ordinance (HERO), I believe that it’s going to be problematic (in a December runoff), for any candidate to be talking about allowing “biological males” to enter public restrooms with biological females – that’s not smart politics.

“As an underrepresented minority that is regularly targeted across the county, it is more important than ever that LGBTQ leaders are present in public office,” said Houston’s first openly-gay Mayor, in a recent interview. However, pushing any of the top 2023 Mayoral Contenders, into agreeing to introduce “HERO” could place them into a box, and thwart any chance they may have at succeeding Mayor Sylvester Turner, who for the most part stayed away from the hot-button issue.

“RUN AT HISTORY.”

With history on the line, someone like former METRO Chairman Gilbert Garcia could have a puncher’s chance in a crowded field of “MAYORAL HOPEFULS” with no incumbent in the race.

Businessman Gilbert Garcia appears to have all of the intangibles needed to make a strong bid to become the “FIRST HISPANIC MAYOR” for the City of Houston, no matter how the coin is flipped.

Garcia has the resources, pedigree, resume, and connections that would make him much more than a symbolic vote, should he enter the race, but he can’t wait much longer to do so.

Now, while I admire councilman, Robert Gallegos, for throwing his hat into the ring, it’s going to take someone with the businessman acumen of Gilbert Garcia, if a Latino is going to make history on Tuesday, November 7, 2023, in the bayou city.

“PEARLAND, TEXAS.”

You might not know, but I was hired a few months ago by Mayor Kevin Cole, the mayor of Pearland, Texas to help him secure his reelection bid. However, nobody stepped up to challenge Mayor Kevin Cole this time around. Our initial thoughts were that Mayor Kevin Cole, a white male was going to be challenged by Quentin Wiltz, the African American male who I helped Mayor Cole defeat to win the seat to become the first new mayor for Pearland, in 30 years, a few years ago.

For those of you who don’t remember my team was also called in to help former Pearland Mayor Tom Reid, a white male, to defeat Quentin Wiltz, when Wiltz tried to defeat Reid, who was 91 years old, and the longest-serving mayor in the illustrious history of Pearland, Texas. It took a runoff, but my team was able to help Mayor Reid defeat Wiltz by 19 percentage points.

-----------------------------

"So, with Mayor Kevin Cole having already won reelection, two city council races will still appear on Saturday, May 6, 2023, General Election ballot in Pearland, Texas."

 -----------------------------

On Saturday, May 6, 2023, current incumbent Pearland City Councilman Alex Kamkar is being challenged by Jai Daggett, in the race for the Pearland City Council District No. 3 seat. And since Councilman Woody Owens, is term-limited, Antonio Johnson and Rushi Patel are facing off for his Pearland City Council District 7, seat on Election Day.

“FBISD SCHOOL BOARD.”

Expect things to get testy in the Fort Bend County Independent School District races as Saturday, May 6, 2023, draws nearer.

In the race for Fort Bend Independent School District (FBISD), Position No. 1, Angie Hanan and Oscar Saenz will face off on Saturday, May 6, 2023, in what is expected to be a tight race.

Incumbent FBISD Board Member Shirley Rose-Gilliam is being challenged by Cheryl Anne Buford, in the Fort Bend Independent School District (FBISD), Position 4, race on Saturday, May 6, 2023, in a race that could be very close.

I can’t say that it’s come as a surprise, but incumbent FBISD Board Member Denetta R. Williams has drawn a whole slew of challengers. For the record, Rolly U. DeMeza, Allison Drew, Angel Hicks, and Sonya Jones are all challenging Williams for her Fort Bend Independent School District (FBISD), Position 5, seat, on Saturday, May 6, 2023, in a winner-take-all-race.

Remember, there are no runoffs in Fort Bend ISD School Board races, so whoever garners the most votes on Saturday, May 6, 2023, in the race for the FBISD Position 5, seat, will be declared the winner.

“FBISD BOND ELECTION.”

The Fort Bend ISD Board of Trustees called for a $1.2 billion bond election to be placed on the upcoming Saturday, May 6, 2023, ballot in a unanimous vote back on Thursday, February 16, 2023, at their board meeting.

From what I understand, the $1.2 billion bond is supposed to fund major projects throughout the entire district that are aimed at enhancing every Fort Bend ISD campus with the exception of the recently constructed schools.

A statement on the FBISD School Board website, states, “The district has not had a bond in five years, and as a result, some of its 82 campuses are rated in “critical condition” due to outdated mechanical, plumbing, roofing, electrical and HVAC systems that are beyond reasonable repair.”

“BLACK HISTORY.”

President Joe Biden talks with Opal Lee after signing the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act Bill, Thursday, June 17, 2021, in the East Room of the White House. (Official White House Photo by Chandler West)

“A LIVING LEGEND.”

I’ve always admired Opal Lee, a true living legend. Lee was born on October 7, 1926, and is a retired teacher and counselor. But what a lot of folks don’t realize, is that Opal Lee is widely considered the “grandmother of Juneteenth” for her tireless efforts to make Juneteenth a federally-recognized holiday. And thanks to President Joe Biden, Senate Bill S. 475, was signed into law back on Thursday, June 17, 2021, making Juneteenth a federal holiday for America.

"MEET OPAL LEE."

“THE RIGHT MOVES.”

I must admit, state Senator John Whitmire has a really good understanding when it comes to making the right moves. If the Tuesday, November 7, 2023, General Election was held today, it’s possible that state Senator Whitmire could possibly pull off a victory without a runoff against the candidates who have “OFFICIALLY FILED THEIR CAMPAIGN TREASURER'S” with the city of Houston Secretary’s Office. However, there’s still time for someone like Gilbert Garcia to enter the race and give Whitmire a run for his money.

While state Senator John Whitmire appears to be the odd-on-favorite, what you have to remember, is that the “OFFICIAL FILING PERIOD” isn’t even open yet. That being said, some of the people who have filed treasurer appointments like councilman Robert Gallegos could drop out of the race, and allow someone like Gilbert Garcia, the opportunity to make a serious run without splintering the Hispanic vote, on Tuesday, November 7, 2023, in Houston, Texas.

“IMPORTANT DATES.”

The filing period won’t officially open until Saturday, July 22, 2023, for candidates hoping to take their shot at becoming Houston’s next mayor. Once the filing period opens up, candidates planning to run for Mayor, City Controller, and City Council will have until 5:00p.m., on Monday, August 21, 2023, to place their names on the ballot.

In my opinion, someone with Gilbert Garcia’s personal wealth has more than enough time to earn a whole slew of coveted endorsements between July and October to make state Senator John Whitmire really nervous down the stretch.
