Mayor Sylvester Turner Won't Win Re-Election Without a Runoff; Houstonians Encouraged to Ignore the Opinion Polls

What do you think? Is Mayor Sylvester Turner at risk of becoming Houston's first one-term mayor? In case you don't already know, the Tuesday, November 5, 2019, City of Houston Mayoral Election is perhaps the most important in Houston's history. Contrary to mainstream media reports, there are more than five candidates running for Mayor of Houston, Texas. That being said, it's imperative that all Houstonians make it their business to inform family, friends, and those within their sphere of influence about the significance of this election. Mayor Sylvester Turner, Bill King, Tony Buzbee, Kendall Baker, Sue Lovell, Dwight Boykins, Victoria Romero, Johnny "J.T." Taylor, Naoufal Houjami, Demetria Smith, Derrick Broze and Roy J. Vasquez are all on the ballot.

Mayor Sylvester Turner Can’t Win Re-Election Without a Saturday, December 14, 2019, Runoff Election; Early Voting Turnout Dismal; Don't Believe the Opinion Polls

AUBREY R. TAYLOR REPORTS©

The in-person turnout numbers for the ongoing 2019 City of Houston Mayoral Election are nowhere near what they should be at this point, but the numbers are helpful in assisting us as we try to figure out where things are headed. On the first day of early voting, only 7,973 voters showed up to vote in person for the entire City of Houston. On the second day, well, only 9,314 voters showed up to cast their ballot in person. What about the third day? Well, I’m glad you asked. On the third day, only 8,919 voters showed up to cast their ballot in person. Again, these numbers are for the entire City of Houston, Texas. You have to remember that Houston is expected to become the third-largest city in the United States of America during the second half of the decade of the 2020s. And on top of that, Houston is the most ethnically diverse metropolitan area in all of America. Anyways, on the fourth day of early voting, only 9,261 Houstonians showed up to vote in person. On the fifth day of early voting (which was a Friday), things started to decline even further as only 8,777 Houstonians got off their butts to go vote in person.

SATURDAY GOT EVEN WORSE

Can you believe that on Saturday, October 26, 2019, fewer Houstonians turned out to vote than on any of the other first five days of early voting? This is crazy! On Saturday, only 7,864 Houstonians went to the polls to cast their ballot early. What happened to the Saturday bump?

DON'T BELIEVE THE POLLS

I cringed when I saw the recently released University of Houston poll published right before the start of early voting. The poll claimed that Mayor Sylvester Turner was leading his 2019 field of “MAYORAL CONTENDERS” with 43.5 percent of support among like voters. According to the poll, Tony Buzbee supposedly was running second with around 23.4 percent of support among likely voters. Bill King, according to the poll had 7.8 percent, and Councilman Dwight Boykins was listed as having about 6.8 percent of the vote, according to the poll of likely voters. And according to the poll, a significant amount of undecided voters stated that they were considering casting their vote for Mayor Sylvester Turner, or viewed him favorably. Thus, according to the pollsters, Mayor Turner somehow stands a narrow, but an unlikely path to an outright victory on Tuesday, November 5, 2019. Look, guys, this Mayoral Election is headed for a Saturday, December 14, 2019, runoff. So, I must respectfully, ask the readers of Houston Business Connections Newspaper, to ignore all polls, and simply encourage all of your family and friends to go to the polls to vote their conscience, values, and principles during the final week of early voting.

THESE RACES ARE NONPARTISAN

While the aforementioned poll also claimed that 63 percent of Democrats polled, claimed to support Mayor Sylvester Turner, and no other “2019 MAYORAL CONTENDER” even broke double digits – don’t buy it. Now, I’m not saying that the information gathered isn't true -- the poll could result could very well be true. But my question is who are the so-called likely voters. Anyways, what we are seeing happen right now at early voting polling places all across Houston just does not point to a massive showing of Democratic support for Mayor Sylvester Turner. Sure, the Metropolitan Multi-Service Center located at 1475 W. Gray Street is continuing to lead the way through the first six days of early voting with 4,492 in-person votes cast so far. But all these votes are not being recorded for Mayor Sylvester Turner at this Democratic stronghold. You have to realize, that there are twelve candidates on the ballot, and every candidate on the ballot will receive votes at every early voting location.

WHO’S LEADING RIGHT NOW?

Nobody knows for sure (with complete certainty) who is leading the Mayor’s race right now heading into the last six days of early voting. But most political pundits and want-to-be political analysts believe that the top six contenders are: Mayor Sylvester Turner, Tony Buzbee, Bill King, Dwight Boykins, Kendall Baker, and Sue Lovell. However, these are not the only candidates who will appear on your ballot in the race for Mayor of Houston, Texas when you go to cast your vote. In case you don’t know, Demetria Smith, Victoria Romero, Roy J. Vasquez, Derrick Broze and Johnny “J.T.” Taylor all believe the time has come for Houstonians to hire a new "CEO" as Mayor Sylvester Turner likes to call himself.
