AUBREY R. TAYLOR: "Democrats rolled to victory back in 2016, but if the Harris County Republican Party had been able to keep their countywide candidates like Mike Sullivan to within a margin of not more than 60,000 “STRAIGHT-TICKET” votes Mike Sullivan and a few others Republican candidates would have been able to pull out victories. Get this, if Ann Harris Bennett had only received a 60,000 “STRAIGHT-TICKET” vote lead (instead of the 70,367 lead she enjoyed) Mike Sullivan would have beat Ann Harris Bennett by 2,264 votes to keep his seat. But a lot has changed between then and now..."
2016 Race Between Mike Sullivan, Ann Harris Bennett Could Hold Clues to Victory for Tuesday, November 6, 2018 Candidates
ANALYSIS BY AUBREY R. TAYLOR
The battle for Harris County, Texas on Tuesday, November 6, 2018, won’t be decided by “STRAIGHT-TICKET” voters as it was back in the 2016 Presidential Election in my opinion. But rather, I believe we’re going to be looking at a competitive battle for “STRAIGHT-TICKET” votes in races up and down the ballot. With that said, “SWING-VOTERS”, meaning, voters who do not necessarily affiliate themselves with either major political party, or who won’t be voting a “STRAIGHT-TICKET” will rule the day on Tuesday, November 6, 2018.
So, while Election Day, seems to be a long ways away, it’ll be here before you know it. And if I’m right, about Harris County seeing a close election, you can bet your bottom dollar that every “SMART CANDIDATE” heading up to Tuesday, November 6, 2018, will be doing “FOUR THINGS” in their quest to win. ONE: They will all be trying to raise as much money as they can for the battle ahead. TWO: They will all be trying to attend as many events as possible to connect with potential voters and supporters. THREE: They will be doing their best to figure out a way to cause their name to stick out in the minds of every Harris County voter. And finally, they will be working tirelessly to secure the coveted support of as many “SWING-VOTERS” as possible between now and the start of early voting which begins on Monday, October 22, 2018, and ends on Friday, November 2, 2018.
JUST HOW IMPORTANT ARE “SWING-VOTES” IN HARRIS COUNTY?
To answer this question I will use the Tuesday, November 8, 2016 race for Harris County Tax Assessor-Collector/Voter Registrar between Mike Sullivan (incumbent) Republican, and his challenger Ann Harris Bennett – the Democrat who unseated him. I must first add that the Harris County Democratic Party, headed by Lane Lewis, the Democratic Chair at the time, delivered a 70,367 “STRAIGHT-TICKET” voting lead to every Democratic candidate running countywide back in 2016. So, just in case you don’t remember, The Harris County Democratic Party’s “STRAIGHT-TICKET” voting tally was 472,030. The Harris County Republican Party’s “STRAIGHT-TICKET” voting tally was 401,663. THE FINAL RESULTS: Ann Harris Bennett received 47,545 (ABSENTEE VOTES), 425,675 (EARLY VOTES), and 175,023 (ELECTION DAY VOTES), for a total of 648,243 votes. Mike Sullivan received 48,291 (ABSENTEE VOTES), 429,782 (EARLY VOTES), and 162,067 (ELECTION DAY VOTES), for a total of 640,140 votes. So at the end of the day, after receiving a 70,367 “STRAIGHT-TICKET” voting lead – Ann Harris Bennett (the Democrat) only beat Mike Sullivan (the Republican) by 8,103 votes. This means, that Mike Sullivan received 62,264 more "SWING VOTES" than Ann Harris Bennett back in 2016.
WHAT DOES ALL THIS MEAN?
Relative to the results of the last major election (2016 PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION) for Harris County, Democrats will need to have a huge “STRAIGHT-TICKET” voting lead on Republicans if they expect to win countywide races on Tuesday, November 6, 2018. And they (Democrats) don’t have to look much further than the (2016) race between Ann Harris Bennett and Mike Sullivan to get a clear understanding of what I mean when I say a huge “STRAIGHT-TICKET” voting lead.
You have the freedom to walk into the voting booth and cast your ballot for the candidates who value, respect, and appreciate your vote.
