On behalf of Aubrey R. Taylor Communications, publisher of Houston Business Connections Magazine, our supporters, sponsors, advertisers, and readers I would like to take a moment to congratulate attorney Lincoln Goodwin. The death of the late Justice of the Peace J. Kent Adams back in October of 2014 left a void that is now being filled by attorney Lincoln Godwin. Just this week Commissioner Jack Cagle announced that attorney Goodwin has been appointed to fill the remainder of the term left vacant by the passing of the late Justice of the Peace J. Kent Adams. Adams had faithfully served the people of Harris County for 13 years as Justice of the Peace for Precinct 4, Position 1 before his passing at the age of 74.

At the time of his appointment by Harris County Commissioners, attorney Goodwin was serving as a senior attorney at The Lanier Law Firm, located at 6810 FM 1960 West in Houston, Texas.

More about Lincoln Goodwin

Lincoln Goodwin is a senior attorney with The Lanier Law Firm. He represents clients in a variety of civil litigation matters, including toxic torts, asbestos related injuries, and commercial litigation.

Originally from Laramie, Wyoming, Mr. Goodwin has lived in Texas since 1982. He earned his undergraduate degree from Baylor University in 1994 before earning his law degree at the Texas Tech University School of Law in 1998. While at Texas Tech, Mr. Goodwin served as President of the Student Bar Association and as a member of both the Law School Honor Council and the Texas Tech University Disciplinary Committee. Mr. Goodwin also founded the Susan Fortney Award for Ethics, an annual award presented to the Texas Tech law student who most exemplifies the honor and integrity required of the legal profession.

Following law school, Mr. Goodwin served for two years as a law clerk to U.S. District Judge Sam R. Cummings in the Northern District of Texas. After completing his clerkship, Mr. Goodwin returned to his hometown of Houston where he handled litigation matters for several Fortune 500 companies at a large national law firm. He then worked as an Assistant District Attorney at the Harris County District Attorney's Office in Houston, and tried numerous trials to juries and to judges.

He is a graduate of the prestigious Gerry Spence Trial Lawyers College where innovative and cutting edge case development and trial presentation techniques are continuously developed.

Mr. Goodwin was admitted to the State Bar of Texas in 1998. He also is admitted to practice before the U.S. District Courts for the Northern, Southern, Eastern, and Western Districts of Texas. Lincoln serves on the missions council at Houston's First Baptist Church and has served in missions in The Philippines, India, and inner-city Houston. He is a member of the Houston Bar Association, Garland Walker Inn of Court, and serves on the board of trustees for the Chinquapin School for economically challenged, gifted students.

Mr. Goodwin lives in Houston with his wife Priscilla, and he runs in the Houston Marathon every year. Lincoln and Priscilla have two daughters.

About The Lanier Law Firm

According to their website, The Lanier Law Firm was founded in 1990 by Mark Lanier. The Lanier Law Firm is committed to addressing client concerns with effective and often untraditional solutions. Our clients, as diverse as they are, all have one common trait: they need serious and sound legal representation, whether they are physically injured or in the midst of a business dispute.

The firm is composed of outstanding trial attorneys with decades of trial experience. Firm founder Mark Lanier is Board Certified in Personal Injury Trial Law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization, as is attorney Larry Wilson. And, because so many cases are ultimately won or lost on appeal, Kevin Parker is Board Certified in Civil Appellate Law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization.

law-firm-towerOur vast trial experience includes cases involving pharmaceutical liability, asbestos exposure, business fraud, serious personal injuries, product liability, and toxic exposure. In fact, we recently earned international headlines for winning the first trial in the nation involving the controversial drug VIOXX. Mr. Lanier represented Carol Ernst, who claimed that negligence by the drug's manufacturer caused the death of her husband, Robert.

We are also noted for our work defending some of the country's largest companies. One Fortune 500 company chose The Lanier Law Firm to help overturn a $1.6 billion default judgment. In that case our client had been sued for failure to warn its customers about the dangers of its asbestos-containing product. The default judgment was entered after the company failed to answer the lawsuit in a timely manner. After The Lanier Law Firm was hired, the default judgment was overturned and the matter was resolved.

In our view, this case was remarkable not only for the size of the default judgment, but also because The Lanier Law Firm was hired by a company that it had also sued. Because the default judgment endangered the solvency of a corporation that had agreed to provide financial compensation to thousands of asbestos claimants, our firm felt that it was in the best interests of our clients to represent the asbestos manufacturer.

Although significant legal victories are a trademark of The Lanier Law Firm, our primary focus remains, in the words of Mark Lanier, "to provide the highest quality legal care delivered in an honest, professional manner to enrich the lives or businesses of our clients."

Because of this vision, the attorney-client relationship begins with the initial consultation. At this meeting we will review the nuts and bolts of the client's legal problems, as well as clearly explain what is expected of the client and, in turn, what the client can expect from us.

Fortunately, not all cases have to go to trial. Our experience and ability enables many cases to be settled out of court. But when a trial is necessary, our in-house attorney/trial psychologist provides insight into trial psychology and jury selection. Our appellate attorneys also stay one step ahead by preparing clients' cases for appeal before an appeal is filed.

Our attorneys realize that this may be our clients' first involvement in the legal system, which can be intimidating and confusing. But navigating that maze is our job, and zealously representing our clients' interests is our sole mission.
