A Flawed Down-ballot Strategy Could Cause Black Judicial Candidates with ‘Ethnic Sounding’ Names to Suffer Defeats

By not answering the negative attack ads airing on local TV news networks against “DEMOCRATIC JUDGES,” the Harris County Democratic Party Chairman (Mike Doyle) appears to be making it more difficult for down-ballot “BLACK DEMOCRATIC JUDICIAL CANDIDATES” with ‘ethnic-sounding’ names emerge successful on Tuesday, November 5, 2024, in Harris County, Texas.
It’s almost like the Harris County Democratic Party has a ‘silent agreement’ not to help their down-ballot judicial candidates and leave them to fend for themselves.
Democrats are using the same playbook that cost them two seats on the Harris Central Appraisal District Board a few months ago. This flawed strategy is the same one that caused “BLACK DEMOCRAT JUDICIAL CANDIDATES” to lose their countywide races in the 2022 Midterms when other Democrats running countywide emerged victoriously.
What we’re seeing play out in real-time may be a real-live attempt to purge “LOCAL JUDICIAL BENCHES” of African American judges through a coordinated effort.
What is Mike Doyle, the chairman of the Harris County Democratic Party (HCDP), doing? With less than a week left before “EARLY VOTING” begins on Monday, October 21, 2025, Mike Doyle, who serves as the chairman and treasurer for the (HCDP), appears to be leaving down-ballot “JUDICIAL CANDIDATES” to fend for themselves while Cindy Seigel, the chairman of the Harris County Republican Party (HCRP) has doubled-down for her down-ballot judicial candidates.
Their most recent campaign finance reports show that the Harris County Democratic Party has $368,011.82 inside their County Executive Committee (CEC) bank account. Comparatively speaking, the Harris County Republican Party has $58,718.00 sitting inside their County Executive Committee (CEC) Bank Account.
You should notice that while Cindy Siegel is chairman of the Harris County Republican Party, she does not control the money. Republicans have a check and balance system set up on their side. Their treasurer is David R. Millard, III, who signs off on the campaign finance reports under penalty of perjury.
I might also add that Cindy Siegel, the chairman of the Harris County Republican Party, is also a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) in ‘good standing’ with the State of Texas.
While reviewing the campaign finance report filed under penalty of perjury by the HCRP for the period covering 7/01/2024 – 9/26/2024, the HCRP only listed two expenditures.
On 9/24/2024, the Harris County Republican Party (CEC) wrote a check for $18,000.00 to Bluestone Creatives, LLC, located at 306 N. Broadway Street, Joshua, Texas 76058, as an “ADVERTISING EXPENSE” for an ad promoting their Republican judges.
On 9/05/2024, the Harris County Republican Party (CEC) transferred $12,500.00 to the Harris County Republican Party for their “OFFICE OVERHEAD” and rental expenses.
On the other hand, what concerns me most about what’s happening within the Harris County Democratic Party with Mike Doyle serving as the chairman and treasurer is that, for the most part, all Mike Doyle seems to be doing is taking in donations from his local nominees and then transferring their money to the Harris County Democratic Party (FED) PAC, as an “ALLOCABLE AMOUNT” which makes it hard to identify what’s happening to the transferred money.
One thing’s for sure: These thousands upon thousands of dollars (transferred) aren’t benefiting their local down-ballot “JUDICIAL CANDIDATES” in a measurable way, as they should.

“FLAWED STRATEGY.”
The current strategy that Mike Doyle and the Harris County Democratic Party are running proved flawed and not in the best interest of African American candidates running in countywide races for judicial positions on the Tuesday, November 5, 2024, Presidential Election ballot.
I’m unsure why “BLACK NEWSPAPERS” owners haven’t started sounding the alarms yet. Still, Sonceria Messiah Jiles, the owner of the Houston Defender Newspaper; Kieth “Mr. Demars” Davis, the owner of the D-Mars Business Journal; Francis Page, Jr., the owner of Houston Style Magazine; Karen Carter Richards, the CEO and Publisher of the Forward Times Newspaper, and Roy D. African Americans are the backbone of the Democratic Party, yet Blacks aren’t getting anything for their loyalty. To make matters worse, Vice President Kamala Harris is seeking to make history by becoming the first female black president of the United States. The local Harris County Democratic Party doesn’t feel any sense or semblance of responsibility to deliver equity by supporting “BLACK-OWNED” media outlets in any way, shape, or form – that’s shameful.
Sonceria Messiah Jiles, Keth Davis, Francis Page, Jr., Karen Carter, and Roy Douglas Malonson deserve much more respect than the Harris County Democratic Party is giving them.
I cannot understand why I must bring this issue to the forefront of this “2024 PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION” political cycle—it is embarrassing.
“BLACKS ARE TARGETS.”
For the last few weeks, television ads have run on local TV Stations asking voters to kick “Soft on Crime Democratic Judges” out of office on Tuesday, November 5, 2024, in Harris County, Texas. But these TV ads are aimed at Black judges.
As it stands today, “BLACK JUDGES” hold a majority of the judicial benches in Harris County, Texas, and are on the verge of claiming more benches on Tuesday, November 5, 2024, if the Harris County Democratic Party gets its act together between now and Election Day.
But the onus is on Mike Doyle to do what’s right. The “BLACK COMMUNITY” must demand respect and stop being afraid to address the underlying issues and problems that have plagued our community for far too long.
A few months ago, a highly-respected “BLACK FEMALE” Federal Judge by the name of Judge Erica Hughes was called an animal by an LGBTQ+ Attorney by the name of Ben L. Aderholt. From what I can remember, the Harris County Democratic Party, as a body, didn’t even address the issue satisfactorily – if my memory serves me correctly. At the same time, the “QUALIFICATIONS OF BLACK FEMALES” was also called into question, and Mike Doyle and the Harris County Democratic Party found themselves accused of “TARGETING BLACK FEMALE CANDIDATES” and working covertly to help incumbent white male judges.
“WHAT’S UNFOLDING.”
The lack of a response by the Harris County Democratic Party to the negative TV ads that are currently airing on local television stations is unacceptable – especially given the fact that most of the down-ballot “JUDICIAL NOMINEES” who find themselves in contested races happen to be African American.
The troubling thing about these “POLITICAL ADS” being run to defeat local “DEMOCRAT JUDGES” is that these “POLITICAL ADS” worked to defeat four Democrats running countywide in Harris County, Texas, in the “ERROR-FILLED” Tuesday, November 8, 2022, Midterm Election – all of whom mysteriously turned out to be African American – no joke!
As a refresher, Judge Ronnisha Bowman, Porscha Natasha Brown, Je’Rell A. Rogers, and Gemayel L. Haynes all lost their down-ballot judicial races in 2022, while the rest of their fellow Democrats managed to win their judicial races.
“ONLY 267 VOTES.”
Porsha Natasha Brown lost to Leslie Johnson by 267 votes with 1,059,031 votes recorded in the race for Judge, County Criminal Court at Law No. 3. But what’s remarkable is that neither candidate ran any campaign to secure votes from “OPEN-MINDED VOTERS” from outside their respective party base, which resulted in 48,087 voters skipping over their race.
“ONLY 4,889 VOTES.”
Judge Ronnisha Bowman lost to Paula Goodhart by 4,889 votes with 1,058,707 votes recorded in the race for Judge, County Criminal Court at Law No. 2. But what’s remarkable is that neither candidate ran any campaign to secure votes from “OPEN-MINDED VOTERS” from outside their respective party base, which resulted in 48,406 voters skipping over their race.
“ONLY 2,676 VOTES.”
Gemayel L. Haynes lost to Kristin M. Guiney by 2,676 votes with 1,066,738 votes recorded in the race for District Judge, 183rd Judicial District Court. But what’s remarkable is that neither candidate ran any campaign to secure votes from “OPEN-MINDED VOTERS” outside their respective party base, resulting in 40,642 voters skipping over their race.
“ONLY 14,290 VOTES.”
Je’Rell A. Rogers lost to Jessica N. Padilla by 14,290 votes with 1,053,356 votes recorded in the race for Judge, County Criminal Court at Law No. 14. But what’s remarkable is that neither candidate ran any campaign to secure votes from “OPEN-MINDED VOTERS” from outside their respective party base, which resulted in 53,566 voters skipping over their race.
“CLOSING THOUGHTS.”
Republicans and Democrats are locked in a “DEAD HEAT” in the absentee mail ballot category as the start of early voting nears. That said, it is incumbent upon every voter to do their research and make informed and empowered voting decisions during the “EARLY VOTING PERIOD” and on “ELECTION DAY” if you can’t vote early.
