I believe, the more things change, the more they are the same. Taxes are higher, vacancies along the Texas Parkway and Cartwright corridors continue to exist. The newly passed “crash tax” as dubbed by CNN, has made our great city, arguably the laughing stock of the world. The esplanades along Texas Parkway, are perceived as turning the parkway into contraflow lanes for the convenience of Highway 6 commuters, and many believe, at the expense of communities of color. This has to stop! No longer take seriously, those who lurk in the shadows of governance, representing no one, but themselves, and who are merely stooges for the rich and powerful! Change comes from the bottom up, never from the top down ( i.e. the Arab Spring, , closer to home, The Affordable Health Care Act (Obama Care)).
Having a mathematics degree from the University of Texas at Austin, working at a senior level in a council manager form of government, and running my own business for years makes me uniquely qualified to serve Missouri City and District A.I am a problem solver. I understand keeping our community moving in the right direction, having lived here for 33 years. I am the husband of Jan West, graduate of Rice University. I am the father of four, Elizabeth Bert, a University of Texas at Austin alum, William, a Harvard Law Alum, Omari, a father of three, and Brook a Columbia U alum. I am the grandfather of seven: Jamal, Jawan, Jasmine, Chase, Rose, Amaria, Khyla.
I continue to campaign tirelessly for the revitalization of Texas Parkway. I have served our community as the Presiding Election Judge for many terms. Presently I serve Precinct 2059 as the Democratic Chair and on the State Democratic Executive Committee in Austin. Here I was the first State (Texas) party official to endorse then candidate Obama for president (Feb, 22, 2007). During the de centennial census, I made sure that every person in our community was counted.
Texas Parkway is the gateway to Missouri City. How it looks determines what businesses move here. On Texas Parkway there are more nail shops, chicken joints, liquor stores and now, dollar stores per square mile than anywhere else in the city. I believe city boards and commissions should reflect the 60% citizens of color, 41% African American, 14% Latino, and 5% Asian. I believe those who do business with the city should look like the ethnic diversity of the city. This does not mean, the politically, or well connected should get the lion share of the contracts, regardless of color! Hire those who can and will do the job. They are out there. Affirmatively, seek them!
I am a retired businessman, a graduate of the University of Texas at Austin, BA mathematics. I am a graduate of the Fort Bend Chamber Leadership Forum (1996), Organization for Action, and National African American Leaders (Black Americans for Obama) Election 2012.
