A January 2012 Partnership Worth Noting
MacArthur Foundation, Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention Announced A Private-Public Partnership
The John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation and the U.S. Department of Justice's Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP) announced a private-public partnership that included a $2 million commitment to support innovative reforms in treatment and services for youth involved in the juvenile justice and child welfare systems.
Under the agreement, OJJDP and the foundation will each provide a total of $1 million over two years to four organizations working — the National Youth Screening and Assessment Project at the University of Massachusetts Medical School; the National Center for Mental Health and Juvenile Justice at Policy Research, Inc.; the Center for Children's Law and Policy; and the Robert F. Kennedy Children's Action Corps — to reform the juvenile justice system. In turn, the organizations will offer states and local governments training and technical assistance designed to improvemental health services for youth, reduce racial and ethnic disparities in the juvenile justice system, and better coordinate treatment and services for youth involved in the juvenile justice and child welfare system.
The partnership will build on the MacArthur Foundation's Models for Changeinitiative, which seeks to create successful and replicable models of juvenile justice systems reform. The four organizations were selected because they helped develop, field test, and evaluate effective best practice models included in the initiative.
"We need to do what's right for America's children," said Melodee Hanes, acting administrator of OJJDP. "This partnership supports state and community efforts to protect youth from harm, hold them accountable for their actions, provide for rehabilitation, and improve public safety. In this tight economy, creatively partnering with a private organization such as MacArthur maximizes reform, while stretching limited public dollars."

Buffett Donated $41.6 Million to Charity According To A January 2012 Report of His Giving For The Previous Year
In the second half of 2011, billionaire investor Warren Buffett donated $41.6 million worth of stock in his company, Berkshire Hathaway, to eight unnamed charities, the Associated Press reported in January of 2012.
The donations — which were revealed in a year-end update of the company's stock holdings and included one generous gift of 394,737 shares valued at approximately $31.5 million — were provided in addition to Buffett's annual gifts to the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and four Buffett family foundations: the Susan Thompson Buffett Foundation, which is named after his late wife; the Howard G. Buffett Foundation, named after and run by one of his sons; the Sherwood Foundation, formerly known as the Susan A. Buffett Foundation, after his daughter; and the NoVo Foundation, which is headed by his son Peter and daughter-in-law Jennifer.
Buffett, the third richest man in the world according to Forbes magazine, has said that eventually he will donate all his Class A and Class B Berkshire shares, worth an estimated $44 billion, to charity. In addition to his own philanthropy, Buffett continues to work alongside Gates Foundation co-chairs Bill and Melinda Gates to encourage the world's super-rich to sign the Giving Pledge.
A Study on Mothers Worth Noting
Survivors of Hurricane Katrina have struggled for years with poor mental health, a study of low-income mothers in the New Orleans area of the United States, a study finds
Launched in 2003 with support from the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, the Griswold Center for Economic Policy Studiesat Princeton University, the National Institutes of Health, and theNational Science Foundation, the project began as a study of low-income adults enrolled in community colleges around the country, including three in New Orleans. After Katrina struck the Gulf Coast in 2005, researchers decided to continue to track the New Orleans-based participants. The sample includes 532 low-income mothers, most of them African American, spread across twenty-three states; participants were interviewed eleven months and nearly five years after the storm.
The study found that even after four years, roughly a third of participants still exhibited symptoms of post-traumatic stress, while 30 percent exhibited psychological distress. Though levels for both conditions were down from the first follow-up eleven months after the storm, they had not fallen back to pre-hurricane levels.
"On average, people were not back to baseline mental health and they were showing pretty high levels of post-traumatic stress symptoms. There aren't many studies that trace people for this long, but the very few that there are suggest faster recovery than what we're finding here," said Christina Paxson, a professor of economics and public affairs at Princeton and lead author on the study. "I think the lesson for treatment of mental health conditions is don't think it's over after a year. It isn't."
An Act of Generosity Worth Noting
Learning Forward Received $1 Million from Gates Foundation
Learning Forward, a nonprofit membership association of learning educators headquartered in Oxford, Ohio, announced a $1 million grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to help boost high school graduation rates nationwide.
The organization is using the grant to continue providing support to states adopting and implementing Common Core State Standards (CCSS), as well as to create an iPD (innovative professional development) solution to help educators at the state and district levels audit their professional learning and use the results to improve decision making and practices.
Through its Transforming Professional Learning to Prepare College- and Career-Ready Students initiative, the organization aims to create a comprehensive multi-tier, multiyear plan that stages professional development at the state and district level in alignment with CCSS implementation. Kentucky, which will serve as the initiative's demonstration state, will review its current policies, expenditures, and initiatives to identify gaps and opportunities in CCSS implementation and prepare students for college and careers. In addition, six "critical friend" states — Georgia, Illinois, New Hampshire, New Jersey, Utah, and Washington — will contribute to the development of an enhanced professional learning framework in Kentucky and will have access to all processes, resources, and tools developed there for their own use.

The New York City-based Mitsubishi Corporation Foundation for the Americas announced more than $1.4 million in support for efforts to protect the environment and the rights of indigenous people, including new and continuing grants and a rollover of its $300,000 program-related investment in Root Capital.
The foundation awarded more than $900,000 in new grants, including $150,000 over two years to the Indian Law Resource Center for its efforts to secure indigenous rights as a basis for facilitating Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD+) projects; $150,000 over four years to Island Conservation for biodiversity conservation projects on Chile's Juan Fernandez Islands; $100,000 over two years to enable theRainforest Alliance to launch a sustainable tourism program in Brazil; $65,000 to the University of California, Merced for its Yosemite Leadership Program; and $50,000 over two years to the Wildlife Conservation Societyin support of conservation efforts on the Patagonian coast. Initially made in 2009, the PRI to Root Capital will help finance rural businesses engaged in sustainable development in Latin America.

UNITED STATES NAVY BUSINESS CONTRACTUAL REPORT
Lockheed Martin Corp., Baltimore, Md., is being awarded a $20,616,676 modification to previously awarded contract (N00024-11-C-5302) for MK 41 Vertical Launching System (VLS) production support material, interim support parts, and equipment in support of DDG 51 class construction. The MK 41 VLS provides a missile launching system for CG 47 and DDG 51 class surface combatants of the U.S. Navy, surface combatants of allied navies, and Aegis Ashore requirements for Missile Defense Agency’s Ground Ballistic Missile Defense Program. It is the primary missile launching system aboard Navy combatants used to store, safe, inventory and launch missiles of various types. Work will be performed in Baltimore, Md. (41.1 percent); Lewisburg, Tenn. (19.1 percent); Fort Walton Beach, Fla. (18.8 percent); Johnstown, Pa. (9.2 percent); Simpsonville, S.C. (5.5 percent); Clearwater, Fla. (3.2 percent); and Sterling Heights, Mich. (3.1 percent). Work is expected to be completed by June 2015. Contract funds will not expire at the end of the current fiscal year. The Naval Sea Systems Command, Washington, D.C., is the contracting activity.
