According to her website, Addie Heyliger ran for Fort Bend ISD School Board Member for Position 6 with the sole purpose to become an advocate for educational excellence in Fort Bend County. And by defeating Jenny Bailey, the incumbent who was seeking re-election, Heyliger has earned the chance to fulfill her purpose and stated goal as the FBISD Trustee for Position 6.

Thank you for all of my volunteers,” is what Heyliger posted on her facebook page after clinching her election night victory.

In the race for Fort Bend ISD School Board Member for Position 6 there were four candidates running on the Saturday, May 9, 2015 ballot. But it was Addie Heyliger who finished with a majority of the votes. She earned 33.27% or 2,477 votes on election night. Jenny Bailey finished second with 29.12% or 2,168 votes; Stuart A. Jackson finished third with 24.40% or 1,817 votes; and J.J. Clemence finshed fourth with 13.22% or 984 votes.

The margin of victory was slim; but a victory is a victory. Heyliger defeated Bailey by a mere 309 votes in the race for Fort Bend ISD School Board Member for Position 6.

GRAYLE JAMES WON ON SATURDAY, MAY 9, 2015 -- CLICK HERE FOR THE COMPLETE ELECTION NIGHT RETURNS FOR FORT BEND COUNTY

In the race for Fort Bend ISD School Board Member for Position 2, incumbent Trustee Grayle James, also the Board President, was able to hold off Kathy Li in another very close race. James earned 54.26% or 3,937 votes; and Li earned 45.72% or 3,316 votes. 

Again, the margin of victory was slim; only 621 votes separated James and Li in the race for Fort Bend ISD School Board Member for Position 2.

YOLANDA FORD WON ON SATURDAY, MAY 9, 2015 -- CLICK HERE FOR THE COMPLETE ELECTION NIGHT RETURNS FOR FORT BEND COUNTY

The Missouri City Council District A race was actually a rematch featuring former District A Council Member Bobby Marshall trying to reclaim his seat from the incumbent Yolanda Ford who defeated Marshall in a runoff election back in May of 2013. But Council Member Ford was not having any of it, as she soundly beat back the challenge of Marshall by gaining 72.13% of vote. 

The turnout was pretty low however, as only 635 votes were recorded in the District A race. But again, a victory is a victory.

Marshall finished the night with 27.87% or 177 votes, to Ford’s 458 votes.

DON SMITH WON ON SATURDAY, MAY 9, 2015 -- CLICK HERE FOR THE COMPLETE ELECTION NIGHT RETURNS FOR FORT BEND COUNTY

The Missouri City Council District B race was a little more competitive than the District A race.  JaPaula Kemp, an attorney by trade, was trying to defeat incumbent Council Member Don Smith. But it would not be her night, as Smith held her off by 134 votes.

I’m not sure, how much campaigning Kemp did leading up to Election Day; but I’m sure that this race was a little closer than most people thought it would turn out to be.

But again, the voter turnout for this race was very low. At the end of the night, Smith earned 56.82% or 558 votes, to Kemp’s 43.18% or 424 votes.

THE NEXT ELECTION FOR MISSOURI CITY

The next major election for the residents of Missouri City will be the 2016 Mayoral Election. The Election is expected to take place on Saturday, May 7, 2015. If anything changes, we’ll let you know.

Mayor Allen Owen, Council Member Jerry Wyatt, the At-Large Position #1 councilman, and Chris Preston, the At-Large Position #2 councilman will all be on the ballot, should they choose to run for re-election, as expected.

TURNOUT MUST GET BETTER

According to the Texas Secretary of State there were 363,147 registered voters in Fort Bend County in 2014. However, none of the races in the Saturday, May 9, 2015 General Election drew more than a few thousand votes. While winning the election on Election Day is important, somewhere in the very near future we must make it our business to increase voter participation in local elections.

HERE ARE A FEW MORE FORT BEND COUNTY ELECTION RESULTS FROM THE SATURDAY, MAY 9TH, 2015 GENERAL ELECTION

In the race for Lamar Consolidated (LCISD) Trustee District 4, Tyson Harrell earned 52.61% of the vote. Joy Williams finished second with 26.71% of the vote, and Sofia G. Sheikh finished third with 20.69% of the vote.

In the race for Lamar Consolidated (LCISD) Trustee District 5, James Steenbergen earned 34.78% of the vote. Sharon Lovelady finished second with 25.66% of the vote, Kimberly Ashley finished third with 24.88% of the vote, and Lynn Franklin finished fourth with 14.68% of the vote.

In the race for Lamar Considated (LCISD) Trustee District 7, Melisa Roberts earned 57.51% of the vote. Rhonda Zacharias finished second with 34.05% of the vote, and Mark Wiatrek finished third with 8.45% of the vote.

In the race for Stafford Municipal School District (SMSD) Trustee At-Large Full Term, Xavier Herrera finished first with 35.36% of the vote, Manueal M. Hinojosa finished second with 32.39% of the vote, and Ettienne Zak finished third with 32.25% of the vote.

In the race for Rosenberg City Council At-Large Position 1, William T. Benton finished first with 70.39% of the vote. George A. Zepeda, Sr. was the only other candidate in the race and finished second with 29.61% of the vote.

In the race for Rosenberg City Council District No. 2, Susan Kroll Euton finished first with 56.48% of the vote. Joe G. Segura finished second with 43.52% of the vote.

In the race for Mayor of Stafford, Mayor Leonard Scarcella held off Robert Sorbet. Mayor Leonard Scarcella was first elected as Mayor of the City of Stafford in 1969. He is the longest, continuous serving mayor in the United States of America. He earned 64.37% of the vote, and his challenger Robert Sorbet earned 35.63% of the vote.

REPORTS: FBISD Trustee Jim Rice Earns Designation of Master Trustee; Missouri City Names A New Chief of Police

FBISD Board Member Jim Rice Finalizes Leadership Training 

(Fort Worth) – Fort Bend ISD trustee Jim Rice has earned the designation of Master Trustee upon completion of Leadership TASB, a program sponsored by the Texas Association of School Boards (TASB). During the fifth session, June 26-28, school board members in the 2013-14 Leadership TASB class made presentations of their team’s findings following year-long research. Class participants selected topics related to public school boards facing change and selected narrowed research fields for in-depth study. Their research focused on topics that included strategies to deal with school choice, creating advocacy programs that work, meeting the educational needs of all children, loss of local control, and embracing changing culture.

The Leadership TASB class met in conjunction with TASB’s Summer Leadership Institute in Fort Worth. More than 1,000 new and veteran school leaders received extensive training on every facet of effective board governance, heard keynote addresses from renowned education experts, and picked up valuable ideas from district showcases and networking opportunities.

After the graduation ceremony June 27, participants joined the ranks of more than 700 school board members statewide who are Leadership TASB alumni.

The 2014 Leadership TASB class, composed of 31 school board members, represents Texas school districts of all sizes and property wealth. Participants who completed all required elements of the study program earned Master Trustee status, the highest designation recognized by TASB.

TASB is a voluntary, nonprofit association established in 1949 to serve local Texas school districts. School board members are the largest group of publicly elected officials in the state. The districts they represent serve more than 4.9 million public school students.

Superintendent of Schools Charles Dupre 

Fort Bend Independent School District 

Charles E. Dupre has led Fort Bend ISD, the state’s seventh largest public school district, as Superintendent of Schools since April 2013. 

With a passion for serving children and young adults, Dupre has invested many hours in shaping the future of others through his role as mentor, Sunday school teacher, camp counselor and friend. Since becoming a superintendent in 2006 in Pflugerville ISD, Dupre’s commitment to developing capable young people has been supported by his background in financial management. 

Dupre is an experienced leader who has a proven track record of increasing graduation rates and improving educational outcomes for students, and of creating a cultural shift that emphasizes a positive learning environment that is student-focused and results-oriented. He is a collaborative leader who works with staff, parents and communication to give them a voice in the decision-making process for the District. 

Dupre was named Region 13 Superintendent of the Year in 2012, and was recognized by the Texas Association of School Boards (TASB) as one of the top five finalists for Texas Superintendent of the Year. The Greater Austin Chamber of Commerce in 2012 named Dupre Superintendent of the Year in recognition of his efforts to improve college and career readiness rates through the strategic allocation of resources and innovative instructional programming. 

In June 2008, The University Council for Education Administration, housed at The University of Texas at Austin, awarded Dupre the Excellence in Education Leadership Award for his dedication to improving the training and development of school leaders. 

Dupre previously served as Fort Bend ISD Associate Superintendent and Chief Financial Officer from 1995 to 2006, before joining Pflugerville ISD as Deputy Superintendent and Superintendent of Schools from 2006 to 2013. During his 11-year tenure in Fort Bend ISD, Dupre was responsible for an annual budget that exceeded $500 million as student enrollment grew around 40,000 to more than 60,000. During that same period the district opened more than a dozen new school buildings. Prior to his service in Fort Bend ISD, Dupre worked in the public accounting and energy industries. 

Born in Casablanca, Morocco, Dupre was raised near Springfield, Missouri. He received his BBA with a major in Accounting from Harding University in Searcy, Arkansas, and Master's Degree in Educational Administration from the University of Houston. Dupre earned his doctorate in educational leadership from Lamar University in Beaumont, and is a Certified Public Accountant. 

Dupre and his wife, Seeju, are the parents of two sons and have one grandson.

City Names New Chief of Police

After a months-long search, Missouri City Councilmembers announced at their July 7 Regular Meeting that former Assistant Chief of Operations Mike Berezin would be sworn in as the City’s new Chief of Police on July 9 at the Public Safety Headquarters.

“Having been with the City for more than 25 years, I consider it an honor to work with my fellow Missouri City employees,” Chief Berezin said. “Council, for as long as I can remember, has always been supportive of my department, and I’m grateful to serve the City as Police Chief.”

Chief Berezin has been serving as the City’s Interim Police Chief since former Chief Joel Fitzgerald left to serve as the head of the Allentown, Pa., Police Department, in January of this year. Well-known for his leadership and exemplary service, Chief Berezin was promoted to his assistant chief position in 2011 and was in command of the Patrol and Criminal Investigation Divisions.

Throughout his tenure with the City, Chief Berezin has endeared himself to the countless citizens he has met while serving to protect the community. He quickly rose the ranks of the Missouri City Police Department, building his way up every rank in the department and climbing “every rung on the ladder,” as he puts it. Under previous leadership, he has helped the City become ranked one of the top 20 safest cities in Texas by Safe Wise, a company that specializes in security systems; and he helped facilitate the department’s participation in the City’s homeowners’ association outreach program.

Thanking Council for the opportunity to lead Missouri City’s finest, Chief Berezin said: “You’ve always been there to give the department positive critiques regarding enforcement.”

He began his law-enforcement career with the Missouri City Police Department in January 1989 as a Patrol Officer. He has since served as Field Training Officer, Crime Scene Investigator, Patrol Sergeant, Patrol Lieutenant and Captain of the Patrol Division. In that position, he oversaw the department’s respected community outreach program through which supervisors are assigned to attend homeowners’ association meetings and collaborate with residents on crime prevention measures.

In 1990, Chief Berezin was honored as “Officer of the Year” by the Fort Bend County 100 Club; the award was also bestowed on him in 2001 by the 100 Club of Greater Houston.

“It is an honor to work alongside someone as dedicated to not only his department but to the entire Missouri City community,” City Manager Edward Broussard said. “Chief Berezin’s dedication to the safety of Missouri City residents has never wavered throughout his more than 25 years in the department, and it is inspiring to see someone as passionate as him continue to grow amongst such a wide diversity of City growth, leadership, partnerships and technology.”

Chief Berezin is a graduate of the Leadership Command College at Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, Texas, and of the 236th Session of the FBI National Academy in Quantico, Virginia.

“I am 100 percent looking forward to serving the City as the newest Chief of Police,” Chief Berezin said. “I hope to do bigger and better things than anyone in this City has ever seen.”

Mayor Owen serves on numerous boards, committees and volunteer organizations, all focused on making Missouri City and the surrounding area a great place to live, work, open a business and raise a family.

Owen and his wife of 45 years are members of First United Methodist Church. Mayor Owen graduated from Stephen F. Austin State University, and Southern Methodist University – Graduate School of Finance and Banking.

MEET YOLANDA FORD

Urban planner and land development professional, Yolanda Ford, has declared her candidacy for the Missouri City City Council – District A seat.

“It is time for better growth and experienced leadership that can identify with District A’s constituents. Our community, currently being represented by an all male council, should be represented by both men and women.”

“For the first time in many years, voters can elect a community leader that is experienced and educated in community development, city policy and who will actively advocate for improved quality of life for District A’s residents.”

Ford has been a resident of Missouri City for 35 years. Her professional experience includes more than 14 years of working in community development, urban planning, architecture, construction, government contract management and city policy for municipalities and nonprofit entities. She has a master of architecture degree and she is currently a land development specialist for a local nonprofit where she focuses on land acquisition, construction management and government contract procurement.

Ford states that District A needs a candidate who understands beneficial development that will increase property values and improve the quality of life for all residents. She stated she wants to focus on economic development, engaging residents and building relationships with school districts which she believes will assist in encouraging involvement and developing a family oriented community. Ford wants voters to know she is the strong, energetic leader with knowledge that is needed to make District A the community residents expect and deserve. She states more than half of our residents are of female gender, but currently there are no women on council. Ford says a city should have representation from both men and women alike.

Ford has experience and various excellent working relationships with professionals in transit authorities, metropolitan planning organizations, departments of transportation, utility companies, developers, contractors, city officials, city staff, neighborhood associations and other entities that are essential to getting issues with sidewalks, streets and neighborhoods resolved quickly. Since she was once a former city planner for the City of Missouri City, her understanding of Missouri City policy, planning and economic development will be essential in reviving Texas Parkway, working with TX DOT to alter some of the newly implemented road improvements along Texas Parkway and bringing in better development for District A.

“The economic development I want to bring into District A is substantial. My development plan will take a methodological approach and seek residents for their input and ideas. It will improve residential neighborhoods, grow Highway 90A, create jobs, businesses and retail locations along District A’s major corridors so that District A is a safe, vivacious community for everyone to enjoy.  No longer will residents need to drive into another city to shop for basic necessities.”

Ford has listed her phone number for any voter in District A and Missouri City to call her. She would like to hear from voters and welcomes any questions, comments and ideas.

“It is never too early to start learning about your candidates,” states Ford. “And using that knowledge to vote is the most powerful way for citizens to be heard and make their community a better place to live.”

The runoff election will be held on Saturday, June 15, 2013. Early voting is already underway!

Annual WATCH Health and Fitness Fair draws Large Crowd 

FORT BEND ISD - To help kick off WATCH Week in Fort Bend ISD schools, FBISD and the Fort Bend Medical Society Alliance hosted the 7th annual WATCH Your Wellness Health and Fitness Fair that welcomed community members from across the district for a fun and informative gathering that featured free health screenings, immunizations, cooking demonstrations, live entertainment, activities and giveaways.

In spite of the cold temperature, families and friends gathered at Sugar Land Town Square to take part in the fair and help spread awareness of the five major risk factors that lead to heart attack and stroke (Weight, Activity, Tobacco, Cholesterol, and Hypertension).

Patrons enjoyed performances by FBISD student groups, including the Colony Meadows Elementary School Choir and the Burton Elementary School Cheerleaders. Members of Austin High School's HOSA (Health Occupation Students of America) and TATU (Teens Against Tobacco Use) organizations educated the crowd about the dangers of tabacco use, and youth members of the Fort Bend Community Prevention Coalition informed guests on the dangers of texting while driving. Youngsters also enjoyed visiting the Radio Disney van to receive fun giveaways, and the Fort Bend Medical Society Alliance booth, where they received free bike helmets as part of the Texas Medical Association’s Hard Hats for Little Heads program.

MISSOURI CITY, TEXAS: Watch Out for the Missouri City Council District A Race involving Bobby Marshall, Rodney Griffin and Yolanda Ford on Saturday, May 11, 2013

Back in the 2011 General Election face off in Missouri City for the District A City Council seat Rodney Griffin came within 33 votes of unseating the incumbent Bobby Marshall. However, a dismal 6.52% voter turnout in the (6) six precinct district largely made up of African-American voters proved a little too much for Griffin to overcome in his quest to unseat the incumbent. But Rodney L. Griffin is back on the ballot again in the 2013 General Election to be held on Saturday, May 11, 2013. However, he's not facing the incumbent alone this time around. Yolanda Ford, a local architectural designer and urban planner is also in the race seeking to unseat Councilman Bobby Marshall.

Businessman Rodney Griffin continues to campaign tirelessly for the revitalization of Texas Parkway. He has served the Missouri City community as the Presiding Election Judge for many terms. Presently he serve Precinct 2059 as the Democratic Chair and on the State Democratic Executive Committee in Austin. According to Griffin he was the first State (Texas) party official to endorse then candidate Obama for president (Feb, 22, 2007). During the de centennial census, he made sure that every person in the Missouri City community was counted.
