Dr. King Openly Talked About Using the Power of the Ballot Box to Place Judges on the Bench in the Southern States

Do you see the men standing around Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., in the photo above? Well, true leaders aren't afraid to stare down injustice and confront it wherever it's found. "The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy. The true neighbor will risk his position, his prestige, and even his life for the welfare of others," proclaimed Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., in one of his famous quotes. Are you a leader, or a follower? Before you answer, remember, according to Dr. King, "A true leader is not a searcher for consensus but a molder of consensus."

Dr. King Openly Talked About Using the Power of the Ballot Box to Place Judges on the Bench in the Southern States

AUBREY R. TAYLOR REPORTS©

Anything that becomes stagnant eventually dies. So, as we pause to celebrate “THE DREAM,” I can’t help but think about how so-called “BLACK LEADERS” for the most part have allowed “THE BLACK COMMUNITY” to become stagnant in the third largest most populous county in America. So, going forward, the way I see it, a course correction will be needed to maintain political relevancy, and economic vitality, as gentrification, and a lack of unity among “MY PEOPLE” threaten to set us back as other ethnic groups thrive and prosper.

So, as it stands right now, if we’re truly honest with ourselves, “THE BLACK COMMUNITY” in Harris County, Texas is trending backward. Why? Well, we’re still trying to use political strategies our people used during the 1950s, 60s, and 70’s, while other ethnic groups have already mobilized and adapted to change in demographics, that’s currently sweeping through urban cities all across America.

Take earlier today, for instance, right here in Harris County, Texas we had two “MLK DAY PARADES” take place again, within two miles of one another. When will the madness end? Once again, we had the Original Martin Luther King Jr., parade take place downtown, and the MLK Grande Parade take place in Midtown.

Listen, people like Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee (18th Congressional District), Congressman Al Green (9th Congressional District), Mayor Sylvester Turner, and Commissioner Rodney Ellis, have their place. But, from what I can see, these people are standing in the way of our progress. At some point, new blood has to flow through the arteries of our community.

Now listen, I have nothing against the LGBTQ+ community, or my Hispanic brothers and sisters. However, it's asinine for my people to continue to blindly cast ballots for every down-ballot Democratic candidate, when other ethnic groups, are systematically skipping over the names of down-ballot Democrats who have ethnic-sounding first names.

In fact, back on Tuesday, November 8, 2022, in the Midterm Election, in Harris County, Texas, the big reason why only Black “DEMOCRATIC JUDICIAL NOMINEES” lost their countywide races is abundantly clear to me, but that’s a story for another day.

So, as we pause today, January 16, 2023, to celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s holiday, let’s not forget that “I have a Dream Speech” was great, but Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., was also concerned about the political and economic vitality of Black communities all across America.

In fact, Dr. King was known for imploring Dixiecrats from southern states and Republicans in Congress to fully enfranchise Black voters. “Give us the ballot, and we will no longer have to worry the federal government about our basic rights,” he said.

“Give us the ballot, and we will no longer plead to the federal government for passage of an anti-lynching law; we will by the power of our vote write the law on the statute books of the south and bring an end to the dastardly acts of the hooded perpetrators of violence,” proclaimed Dr. King.

He even said, “Give us the ballot, and we will place judges on the benches of the South who will do justly and love mercy, and we will place at the head of southern states governor who will have felt not only the tang of the human but the glow of the Divine.

So, in many regards, while we still have a long way to go, for Dr. Martin Luther King Jr’s dream to be fully realized, “MY PEOPLE” have shown up and shown out, in Harris County, Texas when it comes to placing African Americans on judicial benches.

Even though, Blacks running for judicial positions in Harris County, have become sitting ducks, so to speak, and more will undoubtedly be targeted in the upcoming 2024 Democratic Party Primary, and the 2024 Presidential Election, for now, “THE FREEDOM BELL” has rung, and can’t be silenced, as the annals of Texas history must record, that on this 16th Day, of January, in the year 2023, in the year of our LORD, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr’s dream lives.
